PEWTERREPORT.COM CHAT TRANSCRIPT – 2/25/09
pewterreportjf: Hello, Bucs fans. I hate to do this to you, but I probably cannot host this chat session. Big Bucs news just went down and the team will hold a press conference later today. Tampa Bay will release Derrick Brooks, Warrick Dunn, Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard and Cato June today. baybuc35: LB freeagency coming soon? dabucs12188: :( dabucfan: I am curious what these cuts do to the moral and Rah's hold on the team? pewterreportjf: Okay, what the heck. I will hang around and answer a few questions. dabucfan: JF…any ideas why all of those cuts you just announced? baybuc35: well i think LB will be a big need in freeageny and the draft good thing that there is alot of players at those positions for both dabucs12188: well FA is in 2 days pewterdaze: clearing more cap space? dabucs12188: we dont need anymore cap space lol pewterreportjf: dabucsfan – You didn't read my on-line column yesterday? :) Every player released was due a roster bonus except for Derrick Brooks. The Bucs avoided paying those roster bonuses by releasing all of those players before the first day of the league year. guest: I dont understand the DB cut guest: Let him finish his last year … when he was healthy .. he kicked ass still pewterdaze: it was his time guest: Even as late as the vikings game when he covered AP on the pass route pewterdaze: he got lucky on that one pewterreportjf: guest – Derrick Brooks will be 36 in April. He is no longer in his prime, and he absolutely killed the team playing on his injured hamstring in December. Like the Colts just showed with Marvin Harrison, great players can't play forever. dabucs12188: JF- Which linebackers can the Bucs target now in FA or the draft? guest: how much will the bucs pursue housh and other wideouts guest: yeah … pewterdaze: vilma guest: just a bummer … Brooks stood for something dabucs12188: im not a big fan of vilma guest: I guess im gettin old too pewterreportjf: Also, the Bucs are going with a youth movement. They want to play some of their younger players. They have draft picks invested in Quincy Black, Adam Hayward and Geno Hayes. You can also expect the Bucs to pursue some replacements for these players in free agency and the draft. guest: do you think the bucs resign brooks for a pay cut pewterdaze: should be very interesting in the next few days guest: WHAT ABOUT J. PHIL.? ARE THEY KEEPING HIM? pewterreportjf: dabucsfan – the Bucs could target Atlanta's Michael Boley in free agency. pewterreportjf: Things are kind of hectic as you can imagine. I'm literally talking on my cell phone while I host this chat. Sorry to be so rude, but it is necessary. dabucs12188: not a problem jf! pewterreportjf: guest – I don't think Jermaine Phillips will be back unless he's willing to play for less money than what he can get somewhere else. buccanay: Clayton? 1vabucsfan: JF Will the Bucs go after McFadden and Washington? dabucs12188: this is going to be a very interesting offseason guest: Derrick Brooks has been cut too. Does this mean we are clearing space for Fat Albert? buccanay: So much for Morris being to close to his players. pewterreportjf: guest – Derrick Brooks is a legend. No doubt about it. He was only scheduled to earn $3 million in base salary, so the fact that the Bucs released hi says they didn't think he could play at a high level anymore. He didn't want to retire, and sometimes players have to be kicked out the door to realize they can't play anymore. guest: who are the top free agents on the bucs radar guest: we just let are entire recieving core go whats the plan 1vabucsfan: JF Will the Bucs go after McFadden and Nate Washington? buccanay: This regime want to win, I think they've shown tremendous strength pewterreportjf: buccanay – Michael Clayton is interested in re-signing in Tampa Bay, and the Bucs are interested in bringing him back. He will test the free agent market. I'd say it's 50/50 on whether he returns. I know Jeff Jagodzinski (new offensive coordinator) would like to have him in the running game as a blocker, but he's got to catch the football and score more touchdowns. guest: JF – I'm getting the impression that the Bucs will try to piece together a similar team on the field in regards to talent but still remain way under the cap. The signs are pointing to the economic environment are in the minds of the owners. pewterreportjf: 1vanbucsfan – Yes, the Bucs likely will pursue both WR Nate Washington and CB Bryant McFadden. guest: with these cuts the bucs are around 70 million under the cap jvato24: I hope Brooks retires and we can retire #55 this year pewterdaze: so do these cuts change the Bucs strategy in the draft? newman44: how are we going to spend all of this CASH? thoughts about signing HOUSH? buccanay: Is Colin Cole on the radar? pewterdaze: drat the BPA? pewterreportjf: guest – I think these moves had more to do with a youth movement than they did money, although every player but Brooks was due a roster bonus that the Bucs avoided paying by releasing them before the first day of the league year, which is what we just wrote about yesterday in a Pewter Insider column. 1vabucsfan: JF Whats the deal on PBuc seems like he is poised to test the market,I know you said tampa thinks he the best cb on the market does the league feel the same? pewterreportjf: newman – I don't think the Bucs will overpay for T.J. Houshemendzadah (spelling?). Tampa Bay has the money to sign any player it wants, but the team refuses to overpay for players. baybuc35: well this is all good news i think….JF what will are cap numbers be now not like it matters when you have this much money guest: is crowder an option at lb pewterreportjf: 1vabucsfan – The Bucs have been trying to re-sign Phillip Buchanon. He might hit the open market on Friday, but the Bucs will still try to re-sign him. He loves Raheem Morris, which helps. rbrown129: now that the combine is done, who do you think the bucs will go after in the first round? buccanay: Does this increase our chances of paying the price for Haynesworth? Is this related to going after Albert? pewterreportjf: baybuc35 – By releasing the five players today, the Bucs now have about $65 million in salary cap room, the most of any team in the league and the most a team has ever had heading into free agency. guest: what are the rumors around one buc place about haynesworth, housh, and adding another qb baybuc35: good news!! Brian Cushing anyone? dabucs12188: cushing seems like a beast guest: screw fat albert – yeah we cut Brooks and you wanna talk about a lazy bum pewterreportjf: buccanay – No, I don't think today's roster moves will increase the chances of the Bucs signing Albert Haynesworth. We do not believe the Bucs will overpay for him. They certainly have the cap room to get him if they want him. 1vabucsfan: JF Any Idea what the team will do to upgrade the TE spot? buccanay: Dline Dline Dline guest: screw cushing buccanay: Why aren't the Bucs going after Stevens at TE, seems like perfect fit in JAgs' O guest: Who do you see as the Bucs LB's this year? bucs123: SO NO NEWS ON J. PHIL??? 1vabucsfan: JF Any Idea what the team will do to upgrade the TE spot? pewterreportjf: guest – Tampa Bay has draft picks invested in Adam Hayward, Quincy Black and Geno Hayes. The Bucs are high on all three of them, especially Hayes. I still think Tampa Bay could target a linebacker in free agency. We'll find out soon enough. dabucs12188: i cant wait for friday! rbrown129: speak of the youth movement, do you think the bucs will cut Ronde, cause he is old too? baybuc35: JF will you have video footage of press conference about the cuts? pewterreportjf: bucs123 – The Bucs are interested in re-signing Jermaine Phillips, but they probably won't pay him what he could get somewhere else. He'll have to take less money to re-sign in Tampa Bay. guest: Hayward has not shown much other than ST, Black and Hayes all have some talent b Geno is also coming off a knee injury – why cut Brooks when he is so cheap? guest: THE BUCS HAVE TO BE BIG PLAYERS IN FREE AGENCY NOW TO ADDRESS NEEDS. THE DRAFT WON'T BE ENOUGH. WHO DO YOU SEE THE BUCS SIGNING IN THE COMING WEEKS jvato24: Why not cut GRIESE ?@!??@?@??!?!?!? baybuc35: The Bucs are around 60 million under the cap..Last year it seemed like it was C Jeff Faine was the Bucs number one priority. What do you think the bucs feel is there #1 priority in freeagency in 2009? bucs123: I think it would be a bad move on their part not to sign him. Give him what he wants! guest: Thanks for cutting Brooks and Dunn after paying for season tickets!!! 1vabucsfan: JF Any Idea what the team will do to upgrade the TE and Safety spots? pewterreportjf: jvato24 – The Bucs only have three QBs under contract, and Griese is one of them. He has experience in Jeff Jagodzinski's type of offense. That's why he was not cut. jvato24: Before Derrick Brooks injury …. even in the Saints game he had some TFl guest: DO YOU SEE THE BUCS DRAFTING A RB WITH THE FIRST PICK OR ADDRESSING THAT POSITION IN FA buccanay: What were Brooks and Dunn gonna do this? Very little! Do you want a winner? jvato24: I would rather us sign Rex Grossman over Griese rbrown129: The bucs wont cut griese unless they get another veteran qb pewterreportjf: baybuc – No, we cannot broadcast the video of the press conference due to NFL rules. However, we will have quotes from One Buc Place. Mark Dominik and Raheem Morris are having a 3PM press conference at One Buc Place. guest: Its called depth and who is going to replace them – Hayward – please, Clifton Smith – lol pewterdaze: are we still getting the Fab 5 this pm? buccanay: So you bought season ticket to watch Brooks and Dunn ride the bench? pewterreportjf: pewterdaze – No, Scott will publish his Fab 5 tomorrow now because of this big news. It was ready to go today, but it will get buried with this news on our website. guest: Again we are $40 million UNDER the cap so don't see the advantages of cutting a Brooks and/or Dunn without giving them the chance to compete for their jobs pewterdaze: cool guest: WHAT IS THE BUCS #1 PRIORITY IN FREE AGENCY baybuc35: was 55 now 60 guest pewterreportjf: guest – Actually, we just did some math (God help us), and with these roster cuts the Bucs are over $65 million under the salary cap heading into free agency. 1vabucsfan: JF Any Idea what the team will do to upgrade the TE and Safety spots? dabucs12188: 65 million that is just scary jvato24: Great if having the most cap won a superbowl .. we are #1 guest: wow pewterdaze: free agents will be lining up trips to tampa now with all the cap space we have talib 25: WOW I JUST GOT ON AND HEARD THE SAD NEWS guest: will the press conferance be on the radio????? talib 25: WHAT'S HAPPENING? dabucs12188: CHANGE talib guest: WOW GREAT IF WE USE THAT SIXTY MILLION TO BRING IN PLAYMAKERS THAT U CAN BUILD AROUND FOR YEARS dabucs12188: lol pewterreportjf: 1vabucsfan – The Bucs will look at a few tight ends in free agency, or they could turn to the draft. One tight end I expect the Bucs to target is Bubba Franks. guest: WOW i have nothing to say buccanay: Props to Morris and Dommick for doing the necessary evil, had to be done! guest: i am sure DB is steaming guest: Bubba Franks – he is like 40 isnt he so doesnt this sway from the alleged youth movement 1vabucsfan: Bubba Franks eeewwwwwwwww baybuc35: well i got to work from 3 -11 cant wait to see all the updates when i get home have fun guys guest: I'm just in complete shock they cut both starting linebackers. buccanay: Why not Stevens, seems perfect fit for Jags' offense pewterreportjf: 1vabucsfan – The reason I say Franks is because he is familiar with Jeff Jagodzinski's offense from playing in Green Bay. 1vabucsfan: JF Is there any word on what Stevens is looking for contract wise? guest: we will get better now bryant89: JF whats going on with Donald Penn's contract talks? buccanay: How hard can it be for a TE to learn an offense? pewterreportjf: We will be posting the chat transcript and more stories from One Buc Place after Mark Dominik holds his 3PM press conference. guest: WHY NOT ADDRESS TE IN THE DRAFT NOT FA. PETTIGREW OR COTTAM COULD STEP IN A ROOKIES buccanay: WE have the CAP, sign Stevens! guest: PEOPLE – we still have Alex Smith!! bryant89: Are they making all these moves for huge FA signings. buccanay: SMith and Stevens and Gillmore, ALL SET at TE pewterreportjf: Bucs G.M. Mark Dominik has been talking to a ton of agents over the past week about re-signing some of the team's players. The fact that deals haven't been struck (outside of Sims and McCown), it tells you the two sides aren't close enough right now on deals. Players will find out what they are really worth, starting on Friday. jvato24: I believe the Bucs will Low Ball offer Jermaine Phillips … Wait till he gets an offer in FA to gauge his value and then match it rbrown129: Can anyone explain why people are upset with the front office for letting the older people go, I dont understand, they say they want to win a championship, we must take the necessary steps in order to so, and people are upset, I just dont get it. pewterreportjf: I've got to get going, Bucs fans. Needless to say, we have a busy day ahead of us. Be sure to check back with PewterReport.com throughout the day and into free agency as we will bring you Bucs news first. We were actually fortunate enough to break today's big story.
