The Chat Session was held from 9:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, June 17, 2008.

Pewter Report Bucs beat writer Jim Flynn hosted the 30-minute chat session and answered questions from Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans. provides Bucs fans with a transcript of Tuesday's chat session below.

Flynn is identified as pewterreportjf. His chat room identity is bolded below.

The chat transcript reads from top to bottom.

pewterreportjf: Hello, Bucs fans. Let the chat session begin.
talib 25 (cadillac 24): Hey JF!
buc4life79: hey jf
jasonofthetower: Hey there Jim…Can you tell us how some of the Wide Receivers looked? Dex Jax, Antonio Bryant, et al
pewterreportjf: How's it going, Bucs fans?
buc4life79: stovall looked really good from what ive been hearing
guest: i dont know about u JF but i have a gut feeling in 2009 Mcnown is our starter at QB
pewterreportjf: Give me one minute, Bucs fans. Thanks.
jasonofthetower: God, I hope not…Cade McNown was horrible in Chicago…LOL
kybucfan: JF – How did Graham look overall? I know in the insider's mini-camp (one of them) that he and Askew had a mix-up?
buc4life79: who cares bout graham…lol….
buc4life79: just kidding
jonbuc: JF – How are Paris Warren and Antonio Bryant looking?
guest: So, JF. I think it's extremely, extremely early… but I'm really interested in how the o-line is going to shake out? I want to know, who do you think is the odd man out this year? Anthony Davis?
buc4life79: bryant hasnt practiced he had a brace on his knee from what i heard
guest: hey hey hey
jasonofthetower: guest, I don't think you can see much without the pads on
pewterreportjf: Okay, I'm back. Sorry about that. I owe you five additional minutes.
jasonofthetower: JF- Repeating my earlier question…the new WRs – Antonio Bryant, Dex Jackson and others…how'd they look?
talib 25 (cadillac 24): Will the Bucs have a mini-camp practice on Thursday or will they go bowling like usual?
pewterreportjf: guest – Luke McCown has performed quite well this offseason, or at least in the practices Pewter Report and the media have been able to watch. It's too early to anoint him the QB of the future in Tampa Bay, but he does have a chance. This is a big year for him. He's got to get rid of the ball in a more timely manner and avoid the big mistakes. So far so good with McCown.
kybucfan: JF – np, great work on the mini-camp coverage so far!
talib 25 (cadillac 24): Yeah, great job on the mini-camp coverage.
jasonofthetower: How bout Josh Johnson? Does he look lost or has he been impressive?
jonbuc: Doesn't sound like Josh is looking very good…any rays of hope?
pewterreportjf: kybucfan – Earnest Graham is in very good playing shape, but he's got to get familiar with some of the new terminology. The Bucs aren't worried. Graham should be fine, but Warrick Dunn and Michael Bennett will see plenty of reps this year, especially as receivers.
talib 25 (cadillac 24): He's still learning our system and he is a rookie.
jasonofthetower: Yeah, this is definitely going to be a redshirt year for him…
jonbuc: JF – What are Caddy's chances of being on the roster from day 1 instead of PUP?
talib 25 (cadillac 24): It sounds like Cadillac will be ready for training camp.
pewterreportjf: guest – Yes, Anthony Davis could be the odd man out on the offensive line. If Luke Petitgout can get healthy by the time training camp starts he should start at left tackle. The other starters should be Arron Sears (left guard), Jeff Faine (center), Davin Joseph (right guard) and Jeremy Trueblood (right tackle). Dan Buenning has done very well this offseason at guard and center, so he should make the team as long as he continues to play well when the pads come on. Jeremy Zuttah will make the 53-man roster as well. Donald Penn will start at left tackle if Petitgout isn't healthy.
jasonofthetower: Could he possibility be full speed though? I don't think they should rush him. Patella is usually a 12 month injury
pewterreportjf: talib 25 (cadillac 24) Thanks for the kinds words regarding our mini-camp coverage. If you liked today's reports you'll love our training camp coverage.
jasonofthetower: I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, I'm looking forward to it.
pewterreportjf: jason – Antonio Bryant is playing well and impressing as OTAs go on. The Bucs are very anxious to see what he does in training camp. Dexter Jackson is doing better, but he's still raw. He probably is just a return man this year, and he will need to excel there. Michael Clayton has had a strong offseason, but he's in the final year of his contract and he's not guaranteed a 53-man roster spot.
kybucfan: JF – Does J. Haye appear to be more athletic than he was last year or does he just have better technique so far in OTAs? The Mini-camp report seemed to be pretty positive on him.
1vabucsfan: JF Is there a chance if Wilson keeps struggling hes' bumped by MHam or Cox
pewterreportjf: jonbuc – It's still too early to panic regarding QB Josh Johnson. The Bucs are bringing him along slowly. He's very talented, but he had some passes that were way off today. He also had a couple of impressive throws. This is the first time Johnson is taking reps in full team drills with the Bucs (besides their rookie mini-camp), so this explains some of his rust. He'll need to improve, though. The Bucs view Johnson as a project, and so far he looks like one.
pewterreportjf: jason – I agree with you. Carnell Williams is ahead of schedule, which is great news, but with Warrick Dunn, Michael Bennett and Earnest Graham on the roster there's no reason to rush Williams back into action and risk having him suffer a major setback. I still suspect Williams will be placed on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp. He's doing very well, though.
talib 25 (cadillac 24): Have you heard if the Bucs will go bowling on Thursday?
jonbuc: JF – How does Jonathan Hefney look? Sounds like he had a rough day…I kind of view him as a sleeper
buc4life79: jf…whats up with sabby
pewterreportjf: kybucsfan – One of the hardest things to evaluate in mini-camp when the pads aren't on is the offensive and defensive linemen. That said, Jovan Haye has done well in the practices we've been able to watch. Haye is in a contract year, so I wouldn't be surprised if he did great things for the Bucs this season. They certainly need him to from a pass rushing standpoint.
talib 25 (cadillac 24): Some people say that Hefney is like a young Bob Sanders.
kybucfan: Gotcha, thx!
pewterreportjf: 1vabucsfan – Yes, if Eugene Wilson continues to struggle he could be released in preseason. The Bucs haven't hesitated to release veteran cornerbacks before, like Terrell Buckley and Tom Knight. They even cut Sammy Davis, but he was eventually re-signed last year. The Bucs have been pleased with Aqib Talib and Marcus Hamilton.
jasonofthetower: JF- A radio host has said more emphatically that the majority of the Bucs players hate Jon…have you seen any evidence of that?
pikappaphi422: With Bennett taking reps at Gunner, does that say something about his role as a RB
jonbuc: JF – How bad did Monte get burned today?
pewterreportjf: jonbuc – Jonathan Hefney hasn't looked too good in the practices I've been able to watch. He dropped some passes in interception drills today. With the depth the Bucs have at safety Hefney's best shot might be the practice squad.
talib 25 (cadillac 24): Chris Simms took a flight down from New Jersey to Tampa on Sunday night. He said his plane was delayed for three hours due to bad weather. This might have to do with him not going to mini-camp today. Since he is already in Tampa, do you expect him to show up to Wednesday and Thursday mini-camps?
pewterreportjf: talib 25 (cadillac 24) – Where did you hear that the Bucs were going bowling on Thursday?
talib 25 (cadillac 24): Don't they always cancel the last day of mini-camp to go bowling?
pewterreportjf: jason – There have been plenty of players that have grown angry with Jon Gruden, but each of them has had a motive. Keenan McCardell wanted a new contract. Keyshawn Johnson was a malcontent and had a huge ego that was easily bruised. Both Johnson and McCardell considered playing for the Bucs again last year, even after voicing their displeasure with Gruden. Go figure. Chris Simms is the latest — he wants out of Tampa Bay so he can have a chance to play somewhere else because he knows he has no chance in Tampa Bay. Gruden is no saint, but there is a lot of misinformation out there about him. For every player that doesn't like him there's probably four or five that want to play for him. I will say this — Gruden's biggest weakness is his people skills. He'd save himself a lot of headaches if he was just more upfront with players.
jonbuc: JF – with Coyer's new role, what has he been focusing on during the OTAs?
pewterreportjf: pikappahi422 – Michael Bennett probably won't start at running back, so he has to play special teams. Heck, with the depth at running back, Graham might play some STs as well. Bennett is one hell of a gunner, so I can see why he's playing there. But I want to see if he's a willing and able tackler. We won't know that until the pads come on in July. I wouldn't be surprised if Bennett and Dunn lead the team in receptions behind only Joey Galloway. Look for them to be featured in the passing game quite a bit, especially on screens.
jasonofthetower: I'm trying not to believe in Michael Clayton this year…but his reported improvement makes it hard not to…
jonbuc: So are going to be looking at a Philly style pass/run style?
pewterreportjf: cadillac 24 – Not necessarily, but you're onto something with the bowling outing. We were told that the team would go bowling this week, but I can't give out specifics because the players don't know about it yet and Gruden wants to surprise them. The Bucs will hold practice at Raymond James Stadium tomorrow (Wednesday), and I know the bowling trip isn't scheduled for Thursday. We'll report when they are going bowling tomorrow.
1vabucsfan: JF If Clayton plays up to his rookie level would you say the Bucs sign him to a 1 year prove it deal?
pewterreportjf: jason – Michael Clayton has dropped weight and looks as good as I've seen him since his rookie year. However, I'm still skeptical, and so are the Bucs. They know he's had trouble with consistency, and they're also worried about the fact that he's in a contract year, so even a big year from him would make it tough for the Bucs to decide what to do with him going forward.
pewterreportjf: jonbuc – Larry Coyer has been paying a lot of attention to the defensive backs, but he's still involved with the defensive line. Coach Gruden respects his opinion a lot.
jonbuc: Has Dre Moore slimmed down any yet?
pewterreportjf: jonbuc – I wouldn't say it's a Philly-style of offense. You'll have to come out to training camp to see what Jon Gruden's offense is doing for yourself. We are not allowed to give out exact details of plays that are run in these practices per NFL credential rules as they pertain to the media. But what I can tell you is that Jon Gruden is using Warrick Dunn and Michael Bennett creatively in the passing game.
talib 25 (cadillac 24): Oh, that makes sense JF. They are only holding a morning practice at Ray Jay and they will already have buses, so in the afternoon they will take the players bowling. For some reason, I thought they did that on the last day of mini-camp.
pewterreportjf: talib25 (cadillac 24) – Hmm. You might be on to something. :) Last year the Bucs cancelled their final mini-camp practice, which was on a Thursday, to go bowling. Boy, you have a good memory.
talib 25 (cadillac 24): Chris Simms took a flight down from New Jersey to Tampa on Sunday night. He said his plane was delayed for three hours due to bad weather. This might have to do with him not going to mini-camp today. Since he is already in Tampa, do you expect him to show up to Wednesday and Thursday mini-camps?
pikappaphi422: How did Black and Haywood look
pewterreportjf: jonbuc – Dre' Moore is in good shape, but he's got to get in better shape. A lot of the players do. Jon Gruden got on the players this afternoon for having their hands on their knees trying to get their breath in the heat. It's going to get a lot hotter in training camp.
jasonofthetower: JF, Can Sabby Piscitelli challenge Jermaine Phillips at SS this year?
pewterreportjf: Speaking of training camp, we're hearing the Bucs are really revamping their training camp schedule, which should be out in the next few weeks. We've even heard through some of our sources that the Bucs might hold a night practice or two at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex this year, which would be really cool. Believe it or not, the Bucs have never held a training camp practice at night under Jon Gruden. But with the roster limit being 80 players this year and the hot and humid temperatures in Orlando, the Bucs know they have to keep the players fresh and healthy.
jonbuc: Has Sabby made strides in year 2?
pewterreportjf: cadillac 24 – I don't know anything about Chris Simms' arrangements to get from New Jersey to Tampa. All I know is he wasn't at mini-camp practices today, and general manager Bruce Allen said his absence wasn't excused. The Bucs haven't said it, but they could file a grievance against Simms in an attempt to recover half of his signing bonus ($1.5 million) for missing the mandatory mini-camp. Tampa Bay filed three grievances against Jake Plummer last year, the second of which came when he failed to show up for mandatory mini-camp. I don't expect Chris Simms to be a Buccaneer when the team reports to training camp on July 25.
talib 25 (cadillac 24): That would be awesome to have night practices. I know that the Jaguars have a lot of night practices and that would be cool if the Bucs did too. Thanks for the info.
pewterreportjf: jonbuc – Safety Sabby Piscitelli is doing well, but he's not making as many splash plays as he did last year. Piscitelli led the Bucs defense in interceptions in training camp last year. Piscitelli probably will eventually be the team's starting strong safety, but I don't think it will be this year unless Jermaine Phillips gets hurt. Phillips is in a contract year and should improve from last year. If Phillips performs well enough the Bucs would consider putting the franchise tag on him next year.
pewterreportjf: Okay, Bucs fans. I've got to get going.
jonbuc: Thanks JF! Peace!
pewterreportjf: Thanks for the great questions tonight. Hopefully you're enjoying our Bucs mini-camp coverage.
talib 25 (cadillac 24): I'm sorry, I meant that Simms flew in last night (monday night).
talib 25 (cadillac 24): Thanks JF!
pewterreportjf: Take care and thanks for your support. We hope to see all of you at our annual training camp get-together in Orlando in August. We should have an announcement regarding the time and location for the get-together sometime soon.
