The Chat Session was held from 9:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, July 22, 2008.

Pewter Report Bucs beat writer Jim Flynn hosted the 30-minute chat session and answered questions from Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans. provides Bucs fans with a transcript of Tuesday's chat session below.

Flynn is identified as pewterreportjf. His chat room identity is bolded below.

The chat transcript reads from top to bottom.

pewterreportjf: Hello, Bucs fans. Let the chat session begin.
cbgb: Hey JF. Why is there such an uproar over Garcia missing some days of TC ?
pikappaphi422: Am I reading too much into the situation with Jeff missing 2 days of camp and the Pack talking to 20 teams??? or Are these two events related??
guest: JF – Do you have the contract numbers for any of the rookies that have signed thus far?
antcam: JF- I know that this is an outdated question, What's was the seriousness of the Bucs trying to acquire Charles Grant from the Saints last year?
pikappaphi422: Were the Buc's one of the 20 teams???
guest: Why owuld garcia miss camp for the reunion of a junior college championship team?
pewterreportjf: cbgb – I don't know why there is so much uproar over Jeff Garcia being excused from the first two days of training camp. However, I do have to admit that I found it a little odd that the Bucs would excuse Garcia from two days of camp so he could attend his father's football team's reunion. Perhaps there's more to this than we know.
antcam: That he wasnt even on
cbgb: Jim, can you explain how the Bucs decided to use Dre Moore as a UT
pewterreportjf: pikappaphi422 – I think a lot of people are reading into the fact that Jeff Garcia will miss the first two days of training camp and Tampa Bay's reported interest in acquiring Green Bay QB Brett Favre. I'm not sure if the two are related or not.
cbgb: and not a NT ?
guest: JF -With the Texans releasing G/T Charles Spencer today could you see a move that would have the Bucs bringing in Spencer and releasing Anthony Davis if Spencer is healthy?
talib 25: Spencer isn't healthy. That's why he was released.
pewterreportjf: antcamp – The Bucs were interested in possibly making a move for Charles Grant last year, but their decision to bring him in for a visit had more to do with the fact that the Bucs believed Grant would hit the open market the following year, so they wanted to take the opportunity to meet with him while they could.
guest: How many years do you think that kiffin has left in the tank?
antcam: thanks Jeff
guest: JF – Do you have the contract numbers for any of the rookies that have signed thus far?
pewterreportjf: cbgb – The Bucs feel Dre' Moore has the athletic ability and pass-rushing ability to play under tackle. Plus, the team already has Chris Hovan and Ryan Sims at nose tackle. Jovan Haye is in a contract year and if he gets away in free agency in 2009 the Bucs might have to depend on Moore to fill the void at under tackle.
antcam: How do you think the Shockey trade will impact the NFCS?
guest: JF- Has the team announced who they released when they agreed to terms with Zuttah?
pewterreportjf: guest – We're looking into Tampa Bay's possible interest in former Houston G/T Charles Spencer. The Bucs are actually quite pleased with the depth and competition they have along the offensive line.
talib 25: They didn't have to release anyone, but they will have to release a handful of players before TC.
pikappaphi422: When do you think is the drop dead date for a Farve deal to get done for him to come here
cbgb: Thanks Jim, but isn't he a better fit at NT with his skill set ? (Hovan
pewterreportjf: guest – No, we don't have contract numbers for any of the rookies .. yet. Dont' worry though, we'll get them sooner or later, and when we do get them we'll pass them along to you. I do have some interesting info on how the Bucs are attempting to structure QB Josh Johnson's contract if you're interested in me telling you.
kybucfan: JF – What is the sense on who looks to be the front-runner for the backup Mike linebacker spot? McCoy or Teddy L.? I think I remember seeing an insider article that indicated that McCoy had the upperhand.
cbgb: Thanks Jim, but isn't he a better fit at NT with his skill set ? (Hovan
guest: That would be great let it fly
cbgb: and Sims aside)
pikappaphi422: Tell more about Josh
pewterreportjf: guest – No, the Bucs did not announce who they released because the deal for Jeremy Zuttah won't officially be done until tomorrow (Wednesday).
kybucfan: JF – Yes, J. Johnson contract details!
talib 25: What is the chance that the Bucs sign a veteran player before training camp like Rod Coleman?
guest: JF – How much of a difference do you feel Faine will make in the passing game over the team going after a high profile receiver in the off-season?
pewterreportjf: pikappaphi422 – I don't think the Packers want to have their players answer questions about Brett Favre and whether he should return or not. That said, I believe the Packers would like to have closure on Favre (one way or the other) before they report to training camp. I'm not sure if Favre will get out of Green Bay at this point, but if he plays for another team in 2008 I think there's a good chance it would be for the Bucs.
guest: How good of a chance?
antcam: I thought it was to HOT in Tampa for him?
pewterreportjf: kybucfan – Yes, although Teddy Lehman has more experience at middle linebacker, the Bucs are actually quite high on Matt McCoy at Mike linebacker. They feel he brings great athleticism and speed to the position. It's just a matter of whether he can learn it well enough to beat out Lehman. As of right now I think McCoy is the frontrunner.
guest: JF – Are you going to spill the beans on Jpohnson contract or what?
kybucfan: JF – thx!
talib 25: antcam – The St. Pete Times said that. It wasn't true though.
talib 25: Yeah, I'm interested to hear about Josh's contract.
antcam: Me tot
pewterreportjf: Regarding Josh Johnson, we're hearing that the Bucs are attempting to structure his contract in a very unique way, something that may have never been done before. From what I understand, Tampa Bay is attepting to give him a small signing bonus, or no signing bonus at all, and instead give him a frontloaded roster bonus. This would basically make it hard to possibly impossibe for a team to claim Johnson off of waivers. If this is true, the Bucs are obviously thinking about ways to possibly sneak Johnson onto their practice squad at some point this year, so don't assume the Bucs will keep four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster.
talib 25: Wow, that's awesome! Way to go Bruce!
pewterreportjf: talib – We've heard absolutely no new news on Rod Coleman, which is odd. I don't see the Bucs signing a free agent veteran player before training camp starts.
cbgb: very creative !
kybucfan: Very interesting indeed….Bruce Allen proves yet again that he's a mastermind!
pewterreportjf: guest – Jeff Faine's presence has really opened up Jon Gruden's playbook. The Bucs feel Faine has the athleticism to get to the second level and block effectively. As a result, Gruden is running more screens, especially to running backs Warrick Dunn and Michael Bennett.
antcam: What if they claim he and restructure his deal?
landshark: what are the odds favre is here and what will the bucs have to give up?
antcam: assuming both sides agree
kybucfan: JF – On the reported hold-up with the Jackson talks, do you think that has more to do with the "focus" on getting a deal with Talib and J. Johnson done or something else?
talib 25: If the Bucs trade for Favre, what are you hearing about how much we would have to give up?
pewterreportjf: kybucfan – I wouldn't worry too much about Dexter Jackson's contract status yet. I've seen deals go from dead to done in a matter of hours before, but you bring up a point that could be valid.
antcam: How did the Saints trade for J. Vilma and J. Shockey using the same 2nd round pick?
talib 25: Also, would the deal have to be done before the start of TC?
talib 25: Will Chris Simms take reps or watch from the sidelines at camp?
kybucfan: Gotcha, thx again!
pewterreportjf: talib 25 – All I've heard is the same things all of you have probably heard — sounds like the Packers are looking for — or have been offered — a third-round pick for Brett Favre. I cannot confirm that. I can't see the Bucs giving up more than a third-round pick for Favre, but I could see a deal that sends a third-round pick and QB Brian Griese to the Packers for Favre. It's difficult to imagine that Favre will get out of Green Bay, but if he does I think he could very well land in Tampa Bay.
pikappaphi422: With Jeff missing the weekend of practice does he count againist the 80 man limit or does he not count until he shows up???? If he doesn't count until he shows up, do you think it may be their way of getting Simms more reps to showcase him and then trade him by Monday morning??
cbgb: Jim, are Cash
pewterreportjf: talib 25 – It looks like the Bucs want Chris Simms to get out on the field and compete for a roster spot. Remember – the Bucs do not, under any circumstance, want Josh Johnson on the field in the regular season. That said, Simms is only one injury away from becoming Tampa Bay's third-string quarterback, which would mean he would make the 53-man roster. I think the Bucs view Simms as an insurance policy.
guest: Jim, do you feel the Bucs missed an opportunity to become an elite Defense by passing on Jason Taylor as he is still a ProBowler ??
antcam: How did the Saints trade for J. Vilma and J. Shockey using the same 2nd round pick?
pewterreportjf: pikappahi422 – That's an interesting theory. However, I do believe Jeff Garcia would count towards the team's 80-man roster since he is being excused for the first two days of camp.
antcam: Were already an elite def.
cbgb: Jim, are Cash
guest: we are Good .. But not elite
antcam: Then who's elite?
guest: Too many 3rd down conversions last year .. A better passrush would eat that number up
bschucher: no kiddin… who?
pewterreportjf: guest – We had a good source tell us that the more he watched film on Jason Taylor during the offseason the more he made a compelling case for not wanting to trade for him or even sign him had he become available for Tampa Bay. I think the Redskins gave up a lot for Taylor. Probably too much.
pewterreportjf: antcam – I'm not sure how many second-round picks the Saints had in regards to their trade for Vilma and Shockey. Don't the Saints have a magazine and website? :)
landshark: if the bucs get favre is garcia definitely done? how long would it take favre to learn the playbook here?
antcam: I dont know
guest: Sorry .. all the talk about the Saints just brings it out … guess im looking forward to week 1 !!!
guest: How good a chance does Nece and Cash have at this point ?
pewterreportjf: I would agree that I do not believe the Bucs did enough in the offseason to significantly improve their pass rush. They have to get after the quarterback more this year if they're going to defend their NFC South division title.
talib 25: antcam – The Saints reportedly gave up a 2008 fourth-round pick and a conditional 2009 pick for Jonathan Vilma.
pewterreportjf: guest – I do not like Ryan Nece or Antoine Cash's chanes of making the 53-man roster. Nece is working very hard and is a special teams ace. He's also a great guy, but the Bucs might have too much competition for him to stick around this year.
antcam: Thanks T25
guest: Thanks.
guest: Jim, Keep an eye on Greg Peterson at DE .. Im interested to see what he can bring from the Edge .. 6.5 sacks is my optimistic prediction
pewterreportjf: landshark – No, I don't think the Bucs would release or trade Jeff Garcia if they traded for Brett Favre. I might be wrong, but given the way Garcia's contract is structured, the Bucs could justify keeping him around even if Favre arrives. Now, if Garcia bashed the Bucs publicly for the move, the team might not have a choice and could have to cut or trade him.
landshark: thanks
talib 25: JF – Would you trade for Favre or keep Garcia?
pewterreportjf: guest – We'll definitely have our eye on Greg Peterson. The Bucs could certainly benefit from Peterson coming into his own in his second year.
talib 25: I think Peterson will be another Julian Jenkins type.
guest: Peterson has a burst and good first step from what Ive heard
pewterreportjf: talib 25 – Wow. That's a tough question. The safer bet is probably Jeff Garcia. If Garcia can stay healthy the Bucs should be able to make the playoffs again, but I don't know if he can stay healthy. Brett Favre is a special player. He's durable, which is something the Bucs haven't had at quarterback under Jon Gruden. I also can't help but keep thinking about the fact that the Bucs have never overcome a deficit of more than 7 points under Gruden. Favre has made a name for himself with fourth quarterback comebacks. The guy is a playmaker and future Hall of Famer. He had a very good year last year. If the price is right and you have a chance to land Favre, don't you go and get him?
landshark: yes
talib 25: I just don't want to give up too much for him.
talib 25: I would give up a third round pick though.
pewterreportjf: The NFL people I've talked to insist that Brett Favre would not have a problem learning Jon Gruden's offense in about 4-6 weeks.
bayfisher: Is Petitgout fully recovered from his injury last year?
antcam: No, in the last ten years he only has 1 more playoff win the Garcia.
talib 25: I just wonder how much Favre has left in him.
landshark: has to be more than garcia has …
talib 25: I wonder if either of them can be like Gannon and play into their 40's.
pewterreportjf: bayfisher – We won't know if Luke Petitgout is fully healthy and ready to go until he undergoes his physical on check-in day on July 25. As of right now, we know that Cadillac Williams likely will start training camp on the PUP list.
talib 25: If Luke doesn't pass a physical, will they put him on the PUP.
landshark: what do you think will happen with the running back situation if caddy comes back during the season and is healthy?
pewterreportjf: talib 25 – That's a great point. Age will eventually catch up with all of us, even Brett Favre. If you trade anything worthwhile for him, you better hope that Favre doesn't show his age in the same year you trade for him. That's the risk.
talib 25: The great thing about Favre is that he still has an arm.
pewterreportjf: talib 25 – If the Bucs feel Luke Petitgout is a few weeks away from returning to action, yes, I do believe they'd place him on the PUP list.
pewterreportjf: Okay, room. I've got to get going.
talib 25: Will they give the job to Penn then since Petitgout couldn't compete for it?
pewterreportjf: Thanks for the great questions. I hope all of you are looking forward to the start of the new football season. It should be interesting to say the least. Take care.
