10/12 Monday Contemplation: Is This Bucs Defense for Real?

When a team starts 1-4 over their first five games it is genuinely hard to find any unit worth praising. When you are 0-4 you are pretty bad in every phase of the game. That was absolutely true of this Buccaneers team through four weeks. But even at the lowest point of this season, there have been glimpses of genuine defensive football from time to time. And after Thursday night in Dallas, that conversation deserves a real look.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE SCHEDULE FIRST

Before we fully celebrate what this defense has done, some honest context is necessary. The Buccaneers' first five opponents have not exactly been an offensive murderers' row.

The Bengals have the pieces for a high-flying offense with Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Chase Brown — but they have not gotten off the ground offensively consistently this season. The Browns have won some games, but their offense has been far from the catalyst for those victories. The Vikings have a winning record but may have fielded the worst offense of any team the Bucs have faced all year. And the Packers have stumbled offensively throughout the entire early portion of the season.

Of all five opponents, the Dallas Cowboys were supposed to be the real test. Dak Prescott was slinging it. CeeDee Lamb was borderline unstoppable. They had George Pickens, Javonte Williams, and Jake Ferguson as supporting pieces around them. There was no way the Buccaneers were going to slow down Jerry Jones' high-priced offensive show. Everyone said so. Nobody had Tampa Bay winning that football game.

And then the Buccaneers went out and won it.

WHAT THE DEFENSE ACTUALLY DID THURSDAY NIGHT

Let's be fair about how the win happened. Bucky Irving was extraordinary, rushing for 165 yards behind a wide zone scheme, and finally back to some gap scheme that finally worked the way Robinson drew it up. Clock control and field position kept the Cowboys' offense on the sideline for significant stretches. The offense helped this defense enormously by shortening the game.

But the defense also earned its share of the credit. They forced multiple punts. They generated two critical interceptions off Dak Prescott that directly changed the game's momentum. The special teams recovered a fumble in the second half. And when this defense needed to make a stop to protect a lead, it made one.

The defense came to play Thursday night. It had something to prove. And it delivered when the moment demanded it.

BUT IS IT REAL? I'M STILL NOT SURE

Even after Thursday's performance, I am genuinely unsure what to expect from this defense over the next several weeks.

Dak Prescott threw for 316 yards and a touchdown despite the loss. The turnovers did the real damage, not consistent pressure from the pass rush. Can this defense continue to generate the game-deciding turnovers it needs without developing a reliable pass rush to create them organically? That is the question I cannot answer with confidence right now. Of the last several Buccaneers seasons, this one is the most confusing to evaluate from a defensive standpoint.

We have no consistent pass rush. That is a fact. But the pass defense hasn’t been bad. The Bucs are not surrendering big plays over the top. And the bend-but-don't-break philosophy, as maddening as it can be, may actually be a reasonable scheme matchup against the next three opponents on the schedule.

Think about it this way. Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers could find themselves forcing throws against a defense that refuses to give up the big play. Bryce Young and the Panthers could see one too many jump balls thrown toward Tetoria McMillan that end up in a defender's hands. Patient quarterbacks beat bend-but-don't-break defenses. Impatient ones hand them games. Whether our upcoming opponents have that patience is genuinely worth watching.

THE BOTTOM LINE

This defense is starting to develop something resembling an identity. Bend but don't break. Physical against the run. Not giving up the deep ball. Opportunistic in the turnover department. It is not an elite identity by any stretch of the imagination, but it is something. And something is better than nothing.

Some offenses will absolutely take advantage of this strategy as the season progresses. Better quarterbacks with more patience will find the soft spots and exploit them. But for the next few weeks, against the Steelers and the Panthers especially, the bend-but-don't-break approach might be just good enough.

Reports of Harrison being traded that need to be confirmed but I'll still ask:

Let's assume the Bucs are 3-2... We look decent but still not a true contender.

What would you give up (if at all) for either of these much maligned players?

Personally, I think they would both give us something but the question becomes are they significantly better than Hurst?

Better, yes to both..significant?

No...

That said I'd give a third for either no problem. I'd even consider a 2nd for MHJ but probably still with a 3rd for BTJ.

Given our current record I don't think it makes any sense but I'd still go 4th right now... 3rd for either of we had a better record.

What say you?

2025 Dolphins versus 2026 Cowboys

Not my idea, but just compare the two and the difference should be clear.

In 2025 the Bucs lose an important game for them but unimportant for the Dolphins. They lose 17-20. The key difference in the games is that against the 2025 Dolphins, the Bucs have a makeshift O-line and a pocket QB (injured) and, most importantly, NO RUN GAME. So the Bucs offense is entirely ONE DIMENSIONAL. Mayfield throws the ball 44 times

The 2026 Cowboys game the Bucs win 24-16 and the game is not on the QB at all (thankfully) because there is a healthy, successful offensive line and a great running game. The Bucs RUN the ball 39 times (almost as much as Mayfield threw in the 2025 Dolphins game.)

On the other side of the ball, the 2025 defense could NOT stop Miami short passing to TEs and RBs. In, 2026 the Cowboys do throw to the TE (2nd in targets) but they get almost nothing from it. Part pressure, part bad game by Cowboys TE, part defense of the TE. The WRs are the way the Cowboys attack the Bucs

Anyway, here is the side-by-side to back up the summary above

QB PLAY

2025 Dolphins - Mayfield 33/44 for 350 yards 75% completions. 2 TDs, 2 INTs sacked 3 times

2026 Cowboys - Daniels 19/25 for 189 yards 76% completions 1 TD, O INTS and sacked 1 time

RUN GAME

2025 Dolphins - Irving 9 carries for 19 yards 0TDs, average 2.1 YPC. Long of 12 yards. 16 Rushing plays

2026 Cowboys - Irving 21 carries for 165 yards, 2 TDS (one a reception), average 7.9 YPC long of 72. 39 rushing plays

In the 2025 Dolphins game Mayfield stays in the pocket, only 3 runs for 16 yards. In the 2026 Cowboys game Daniels runs 7 times for 23 yards

OFFENSIVE LINE

2025 Dolphins - Chuck, Jordan*, Barton, Feeney, Goedeke. (*Jordan is out of football)

2026 Cowboys - Wirfs, Bredeson, Barton, Mauch, Goedke (the 2024 line?)

In the 2025 Dolphins game the Bucs cannot run the ball behind that O-line and they probably give up a lot of pressure even with a faster reading, more experienced Mayfield.

In the 2026 Cowboys game the O-line is intact. 2025 Miami not only has a bad run defense like the Cowboys they are out of it. The Cowboys very much in it. we run over the Cowboys, we cant run against the Dolphins.

DEFENSIVE TARGETS

Dolphins - the Bucs defense shuts down an injured Waddle but the top targets are TEs and RBs. They hit a bomb TD to WR but then its Gulcich and Arcane destroy them

Cowboys - there top targets are receivers They do go to Ferguson at TE but they get basically nothing from him

Week 5: Bucs Win If / Cowboys Win If

The 0-4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers are being asked to travel to Dallas for a Thursday Night Football game. None of it adds up to anything good. Not a single part of this equation works in the Buccaneers' favor.

This team has been historically terrible on Thursday nights. Their record in Dallas is equally grim. They are starting an undrafted rookie quarterback. Their offensive line cannot run block or pass block consistently. Their pass rush has been invisible for four consecutive weeks. And the Dallas Cowboys' offense is precisely the type of high-powered, skill-heavy attack that feasts on Todd Bowles' defense in prime time.

If there was ever a game that had disaster written all over it before the opening kickoff, this is it. But here is how both teams set themselves up for victory anyway.

BUCS WIN IF...

Bucs on Offense: Run the Football and Shorten the Game

Believe it or not, this is another genuine opportunity for the Buccaneers' offense to find some rhythm and build some much-needed momentum. The Dallas Cowboys' defense is not good. Ranked 30th in total defense and struggling to stop anyone consistently, this is as inviting a matchup as a struggling offense could hope for in a must-win situation.

The key word is running the football. If the Buccaneers have any realistic chance of winning Thursday night, they need to establish the ground game early, shorten the game, control the clock, and keep Dak Prescott and that offense on the sideline as much as possible. A shootout against Dallas on a short week on the road in prime time is not a scenario that ends well for this team. Ball control and physicality in the running game are the only paths to a competitive outcome.

As I said last week, Jalon Daniels is not ready to be a full-time NFL starter. That reality has not changed between Sunday and Thursday. But Daniels can manage a game effectively if the running game gives him something to work with. Get Bucky Irving going. Get Kenny Gainwell involved. Maybe even give Sean Tucker some carries if the game script allows for it. Manage the game. Protect the ball. And if a splash play presents itself downfield, take it. This offense is starving for a momentum play and Thursday night would be a beautiful time for one to arrive.

Bucs on Defense: Hope Dak's Impatience Works Against Him

The Buccaneers' defense has quietly been flying under the radar over the past three weeks. Playing the Bengals, Browns, Vikings, and Packers, three of whom rank in the bottom ten offenses in the league, has masked some very real structural problems. Opponents have not needed to push the ball downfield because the Buccaneers' offense has given them comfortable leads to protect. The defense has not been truly stress-tested by a high-functioning offense yet in 2026.

Thursday night that changes. Dak Prescott will push the ball. CeeDee Lamb will demand attention on every snap. The Cowboys will not be content to play conservatively or manage the clock. They will attack this secondary vertically and with pace from the very first drive.

The realistic hope for the Buccaneers is not that they dominate Dallas offensively. It is that Bowles' bend-but-don't-break defensive philosophy frustrates Dak Prescott into forcing throws that turn into interceptions. Prescott has shown throughout his career that impatience can get the better of him when defenses take away his first read consistently. If the Buccaneers can keep things in front of them, limit the big plays, and let the game stay close long enough for Dak to press, a turnover or two is not out of the question.

It is not much of a game plan. But it may be the only realistic one available.

COWBOYS WIN IF...

Cowboys on Offense: Let the Game Come to Them

Dak Prescott has looked sharp for the most part through four weeks of the 2026 season. He has CeeDee Lamb on one side and George Pickens on the other. The combination is going to be a real problem for corners who have been getting away with playing soft coverage.

The formula for Dallas on Thursday night is simple. Don't force it. Let the game come naturally. The points will follow if Prescott is patient. He does not need to take unnecessary risks against a defense that will inevitably give him opportunities if he waits for them. Take the underneath completions. Move the chains. Let Lamb do what Lamb does.

Cowboys on Defense: Make the Rookie Pay Early

For what has been a 30th ranked defense through four weeks, Thursday night's game represents a genuine opportunity to climb the rankings. The Cowboys will be lining up across from an undrafted rookie quarterback making just his second career start, behind an offensive line that has been unable to consistently run block or pass block against anyone this season.

Watch for the Cowboys' pass rush to apply early pressure on Daniels and force him into uncomfortable decisions before he settles into a rhythm. And keep an eye on rookie safety Caleb Downs to get an early interception off a Daniels forced throw under pressure, along with two sacks from the Cowboys' pass rush that disrupt any momentum the Buccaneers' offense tries to build.

FINAL WORD

I do not see this being the week the Buccaneers begin their turnaround. They lack the coaching ingenuity to overcome scheme disadvantages in prime time. They lack the offensive personnel to keep pace with a Cowboys offense that will be well prepared and playing at home under the lights. And they lack the pass rush to make Dak Prescott uncomfortable enough to consistently take him out of his rhythm.

Thursday Night Football. AT&T Stadium. Dallas, Texas. The 0-4 Buccaneers.

None of it adds up to anything good.

Prediction: Cowboys WIN 37-10

Cowboys - 2nd best offense, terrible defense especially against the run. There is a way to win, but doubt it

Steelers - at home. Offense almost as bad as the Bucs, defense about the same. First and only win?

Panthers - away. Will be 0-1 in the division

Bucs go 1-3 in October?
