if Baker throws another 40 TDs/15 INTs he should get $60M/yr. Let's not pretend like he shouldn't automatically get that if he managed to do that. that would be 109 TDs in three consecutive seasons.
I think that it's more realistic to project something between what he did with Canales and coen. Call it 32-36 TDs, 9-12 INTs PR over 100, QBR in the mid-60s. That would be more than enough to warrant a $50M-$55M/yr contract. My only question would be for how many years.
Sorry, that would be 117 TDs. Forgot about the 8 TDs in the playoffs he's thrown for TB since he got here.
It would behoove the Bucs to extend as soon as possible, if Baker is amenable to it. The price only grows each year.think they will extend him with one year to go?
I am not sure about that. I only meant that most of these contract just slot the QB in a relative tight range so if the team wants to keep the QB and the QB wants to stay everyone pretty much knows the deal. Purdy was pretty much paid what QBs get paid.
"Purdy is guaranteed to earn, as a practical matter, $115.346 million through 2027. The 49ers can avoid his $55.05 million compensation in 2028 by cutting him on or before April 1, 2027.
The new-money average is $53 million per year. The six-year deal, from signing, has an annual value of $45.057 million"
Most likely Baker get a similar deal, adjusting forward in time
When they do it depends on both parties, but Baker Mayfield is seriously underpaid compared to Purdy.
Waiting can get expensive, but the Bucs have been shown to be proactive with contracts for desired talent, and the 2 year deal they signed with extension opportunities may have been designed with the intent to renegotiate at some point…just don’t want to see fans freak out when Baker’s renegotiation takes him from $30 mil to $55 mil to $60mil.
I’m sure the organization is pursuing a plan, but Purdy’s contract just added pressure. This is going to be an interesting season!
For whatever it's worth, i think Baker's new contract will be pretty team-friendly. he isn't going to try and hold TB hostage for a top-of-the-market payday. Not the kind of player he's ever been. Somewhere between $50-$55M/yr AAV would be my guess.
Spytek speaks on a topic that was pretty active on these board back then
"It was a competition in 2023 and it was a close competition,” Spytek said. “And I think the thing that I respect most about Baker is he didn’t come in with any kind of attitude other than, ‘I’m here to compete. I’m here to give you guys my best, and I’m gonna let it rip.’ And him and Kyle [Trask] went back and forth for a while and then really Baker found his rhythm kind of halfway through the camp and let it rip.”
not sure what halfway through camp would be but there you go
Obviously just one talking head's opinion., but Simms moves Mayfield up to the No. 9 QB. T
This year that would be roughly $53 million per season?
I think Baker knows his strengths and the cost to the team to provide needed to play to that strength - and his part in it. Similar to Brady in that regard.
However, considering market dynamics, the Bucs also know they got a bargain. So I doubt he will be “underpaid” for long, especially if he has another year like the first two.
This is a hilarious take (I mean that in a good way), and pretty interesting comparison. It’s absurdly provocative enough to make me seriously consider it.Brock Purdy has signed a five-year contract extension worth $265 million with the San Francisco 49ers. This deal includes $181 million in total guarantees, with $165.05 million guaranteed in the first three years of the contract. The average annual value (AAV) of the contract is $53 million, making him one of the highest-paid players in NFL history
Not bad for the second coming of Shaun King.
It was actually a barb at the Red Board GM who attempted to belittle Purdy and what he's done in the league by saying he was only as good as Shaun King.
I think Purdy is pretty clearly better than Shaun King, but I - nor anyone else - is as good at analyzing the analytics as the Red Board GM.
If only there was an example of another bottom tier QB riding the 49ers wave to the Super Bowl...

Add that example and Shaun King’s career earnings up and let me know how they compare to $265M.
Yet another quality eval out of you. Keep up the good work.
Came out today that Godwin turned down 30 mil aav from the pats. Also had an offer from the Steelers.
Will baker do something similar? Knows he has a great line and weapons here.
it won’t be discussed til the off season but based on his first 2 years here, and this being the best line and weapons he’s had, the skies the limit.
needs to cut down his turnovers a bit. I get he tried to be super man, & needed to be at times, but how many times has he thrown the ball away? Last year alone I can honestly remember once off the top of my head. Sure he made the occasional miracle run or throw, but also led to turnovers.
I hope he’s here the rest of his career.
You are missing something. Even though the Godwin turned down more money he was still overpaid by the Bucs given his injury. Godwin has no injury clause in his contract even though his ankle was jacked up. Licht showed loyalty to Godwin because Godwin was tagged twice. Licht followed through on a handshake promise that Godwin would get paid down the road IMO.Came out today that Godwin turned down 30 mil aav from the pats. Also had an offer from the Steelers.

Similarly, Baker has been relatively underpaid, and Licht will show loyalty once again and pay Baker what he's worth. There may be a very slight hometown discount if any. Licht will want to get it done next offseason. He'll pay him because if he waits until Baker becomes a free agent the price will be even higher, perhaps unpalatable at that point.

1. Garoppolo's 2018 contract equates to $217M today.
2. Same regime that took Solomon Thomas over Pat Mahomes.
3. Same regime that traded 3 1st round picks to move up to #3 to take Trey Lance.
Thankfully for the rest of the league the 49ers have no fucking clue how to evaluate QBs.

That's true. They even signed Josh "The Real Deal" Rosen at one point.
Licht gave a non-answer answer when asked about resigning Baker. He said "Its a puzzle" referring to the job of resigning Baker while still having to get deals done for the other guys. Well yes that's your job. Thanks for telling us nothing. Of course the public isn't going to be privy to contract negotiations. Baker is puzzle piece #1 in importance, so you can't blame his contract extension on how it works in with the others. Licht was also asked his priorities for getting other free agents signed, and of course he had to be politically correct and not tell us that Goedeke is more important than McCollum etc. But this is the NFL and the QB is top priority. That's not a secret.
SR left Licht off the hook a little bit. He could have followed up and tried to get some tiny morsel of information such as that they will be trying to work something out after this season. But a SR podcast isn't 60 Minutes, and the kudos to getting Licht to sit down for a podcast at all when he isn't working for Buccaneers.com or ESPN. Good job, but don't think the Baker contract topic is going to be put to rest by saying "Its a puzzle." The other player contracts are a puzzle after you figure in what you are paying Baker.
Just watched today's episode of ESPN's "GET UP". Sneaky Hembo's trivia question of the day:
Who is the only QB with a higher career passer rating than Aaron Rodgers (102.6)? (minimum 1,000 attempts)
3rd? Mahomes. 4th? Lamar. 5th? Burrow.
Answer: Brock Purdy 104.9

If not for the 1,000 attempts minimum, I was gonna guess Shaun King. But Purdy was a close second.
For reference, Shaun King's rating was 73.4. It's like he and Purdy are twins.
I'll start by saying that Baker won't be looking for a max contract type of deal. just not one of the things that motivates him. So even if he has another career year, he's not going to push for a $60M/yr contract. He knows that he needs a decent defense, a solid OL, decent receivers and an at least average NFL running attack to complment what he can do. And he knows that means leaving some $$$ on the table.
That said, if he has another solid season, say something between what he did with Canales and Coen, so something like this: ≈32-36 TDs, 13 or or less INTs, completion%≈66%, Passer Rating≈100, QBR>60, etc., Baker will get offered at least $50M/yr AAV. As he should at that point.
