Former Florida State quarterback, and likely Bucs draft pick, Jameis Winston, is known for his loud, boisterous personality. Some have described it as confident, while detractors call it cocky.
Regardless of the more accurate description, Tampa Bay star linebacker Lavonte David thinks if Winston is the pick, his personality will fit inside the locker room, or else the veterans will make it fit.
“We have guys in this locker room with great character and I think if we draft him and (he) comes in the locker room, I am sure guys that will pull him to the side and make him understand that there’s a role here he has to play, and sometimes he may have to tone that down,” David said. “Some guys may just say, ‘Be yourself. That’s who you are so be yourself.’ But I don’t think it will be a distraction or anything like that. I’m sure if he comes in he’ll adapt to what we have going on in the locker room.”
David, during his few minutes on the podium also touched on the team being eager to get last season’s 2-14 record behind them
“Very eager – you can tell by the guy’s attitude in the locker room,” David said. “Nobody’s mentioned anything about last year yet. That was one of the worst years I’ve been through since I started playing football and something I want to get out of my head as soon as possible. That’s why I’m here every day, just doing what I got to do to not go through nothing like that again and I’m sure all the other guys feel that way.”

When has Winston NOT been a distraction. Bucs players will tire of it and if they continue to lose, they’ll get fed up with the guy.
…..the fact that he has to answer questions about Winston even before he even sets foot at OBP already shows you that the guy will be a distraction.
SMH, so true
Barron tried to come in and run the meeting rooms and such after the Bucs took him high. It got him punched in the mouth.
Winston better win early or the Vets will slow his roll quick fast and in a hurry.
This team’s method of dealing with players who aren’t following the company line hasn’t been that great: Josh Freeman, Mike Williams come to mind. There’s not a player in the locker room who is leader enough to keep Winston under control.
If the BUCS continue to lose, they’ll be tired of damn near everyone else in the locker room. Whether it’s Winston or Marriota or whoever is selected that highly, he’ll garner lots of outside attention and how he deals with it is all that matters before the winning or losing begins.
So true man. I feel like Mariota’s Hawaii swag will fit in perfectly with Gerald McCoy, LVD, VJax, Banks, etc. Extreme immaturity issues don’t resolve themselves in less than 6 months time. Winston has absolutely no sense of transparency.
I’m for whoever we draft or trade for. Go Bucs!
Winston was never a distraction in the Florida State locker room. Players loved him in Tally and will love him in Tampa.
…..like time time he was suspended but showed up for warm ups in uniform?
And who could forget: the players were so distracted that FSU wen’t on to lose that game to Clemson and got knocked out of the College Football Playoffs due to their one regular season loss. If only Winston had refrained from vulgar language, FSU would have been able to complete two consecutive undefeated regular seasons, winning 29 straight games in the process. Oh what could have been if Winston didn’t come out of the tunnel in shoulder pads…
Because they were 19 years old. David said he will put him in his place one way or another, grown men won’t tolerate his crap.
They’re talking about Winston needing a babysitter. What exactly about that makes you believe the guy isn’t going to be trouble for the franchise?
LMAO “Winston was never a distraction in the Florida State locker room. Players loved him in Tally and will love him in Tampa.”
Too funny. Watch Winston as his team runs past him out of the tunnel. To a man no one high-fived him or looked him in the eye even.
This guy is no leader.
@horse- as long as we don’t end up with Cuntler…
I so agree.
You haters forget he’s been to charity events for Buc icons. He’s already met, and has gotten to know several current, and former Bucs. Was M.M. at the Alstott fundraiser? Was he playing golf Monday with Mr. Derrick Brooks? Truth is everyone but you Debbie Downers love the kid. He’s the first pick in the 2015 draft for your Tampa Bay Buccaneers, get on board, or jump ship, but please stop throwing cold water at a time true fans should be cheering. I’ll stand up and say, I couldn’t be happier he’s about to become the face of the franchise. Sorry ya all ain’t getting the guy you want, but some of us are. Get use to it, or get gone!!
We have a right to our own opinion, maybe you should mind your business.
I said I was out until the draft but some of you children, mostly Mariota fans need to get a grip. It’s over, your precious choir boy will never see a Bucs uniform so get on the train or get off.
Mariota fans are like a self conscious woman, you can’t even talk about another player without having to deal with their bs.And seeing as how us WInston fans have our own opinion as well, maybe you should mind your own business as well.
I love how all of you talk like you even know Winston.
Wow, you really changed my view on Winston and his supporters.
Nobody likes a sore loser.
Is it 8 pm on Thursday? No, L&L still have time to realize the mistake Winston will be.
Every party has a pooper that’s why we invited you, party poopers!!
Hate me now too, that’s what haters do. I love me some Jaboo!!!
Winston might be a good QB eventually. Don’t expect him to do what he did in college though. He won’t win every game. He won’t be clutch in every 4th quarter that the Bucs are down. He will likely throw a lot of interceptions. He may get injured from all the hurries, knockdowns and sacks he is definitely going to take. He may be better than MM in year one. He may not. Bucs offensive line is in need of repair and even if they draft offensive lineman in round 2(OT),3(OG),and 4(OG), they would still be rookies and need time to adapt to the pro game and new system. Be realistic. I just hope the Bucs make the best LONG TERM move.
Personally, I hope the Bucs draft Mariota and then ransom him to the highest bidder. If they trade down to 2, 6, or 7, they will be able to pick up extra picks and may still be able get Winston.
Jaboo is as good as signed. Love him or hate him Winston is going to be headlining the league- win, lose or draw… Bucs aren’t used to the kind of profile he can potentially bring to town…he will remain a villain to some no matter what he does- BUT if he turns his past struggles and problems into Super Bowl rings, it will be a great football story…
Football outsiders crunched the numbers and estimate that Winston has a 63% chance of busting and 3 of being elite.
So buddah, are you saying there is a chance? Dumb and dumber quotes are great.
And those numbers have so many outliers that can’t be predicted it’s not even funny. Stats are for losers and wins are all that matters. And Mariota has proven time and time again he can’t win the big game. Hell the dude couldn’t even win the pac 12 till this past year.and if you want to put your stock in what a website says , that makes you a sheep, some of us adults form our own opinion with our own eyes.
thats 3% more than Sex Panther…
I have a lot of respect for Football Outsiders. Go read their blog. They are not pro or anti-fly and they are not using off-field issues as data. If you look at their data objectively you can reach the conclusion that I did: 1. Mariota has a much greater chance than Winston of having a successful and long career. 2. Winston is much more likely to have a career like Couch or Vick than he is Luck. 3. The NFL is overvaluing young quarterbacks and setting them up for failure. Only an idiot would dispute the credentials of Football Outsiders. Compare their analytic techniques to the subjective option attend commentary that has dominated the Discussion on local boards.
Like Surferdudes has said; get use to it. I’m uneasy about both QB’s, but I would pick Winston over Mariotta because I know he can come back from games and has proven it many times.
Yup, Winston has good experience not studying during the week and not implementing the game plan and not seeing defenders in the middle of the field… So he had lots of comebacks.
I just don’t think to Bucs will have better talent at every position then FSU compared to the sad ACC…
Thank you. It’s such a breath of fresh air to find fans who understand being a QB and the CEO of your franchise has just as much to do off the field as your play does ON IT. There are dozens of guys that put up stats in college. I’d argue Johnny Manziel made Winston look average. It’s not about stats though. The fact guys are coming out to publicly defend his immaturity should SCREAM even more to Tampa fans to stay away from a guy. This is your CEO we’re talking about people. Not a leader, “THE LEADER”.
Stop blowing off the character flaws. Sure, all of us made some mistakes at 19, but none of you in this forum making excuses for this man were provided the opportunity and blessed with the ability of this man. I will promise you if most of you were given the ability, you would never act the same.
If I led called the shots of an incredibly horrible organization, what message does that send to your team? On the field matters more than what you do that off it? The only reason Winston was never arrested is because the FSU police department overlooked the man. So that justifies drafted him? Just because he was never booked? The culture in America in what we accept as people is a HUGE concern, and should be a concern to ALL OF US.
Drafting and rewarding this kid just continues to sending the wrong message, continues to show every young athletic talented kid you can get away with everything outside of murder if you are good. I don’t care how good you are, that’s the wrong message.
I agree as a veteran. My first tour in Afghanistan was on my 19th birthday. I followed up with 3 more in 6 years. Us with honor and pride, want someone one our level. Pulling for Winston is impossible if you have moral fiber. I like your comment.
I’m more concerned with Jdubb’s medium to long release, and lack of an ability to see LBers and safeties in zone then his repeated lack of a moral compass…
But that worries me as well.
And thank you for your service!
This gets even more ridiculous by the day. ALL rookies need to lean on veterans to show them the ropes. No one is saying Winston, or anyone else, needs a parole officer to follow him around. You people interpret things to suit your bias. As the seeming inevitably of drafting Winston gets closer, the more the self-crowned moral high-grounders are ranting over the same worn out 2012 issues that are getting magnified by the day. Even the all-knowing Right Reverend BF47 is weighing in to enlighten the masses of “casual fans”. Funny, how the two pot-smoking DE’s character isn’t being questioned; but a 19 year old guy who shoots a BB gun, told it’s ok to take some crab legs and walks out with them and says something vulgar is vilified. The Court system determined the “rape” didn’t happen. Isn’t it time to get over it! Sure think it says something about some people’s character who think accusation equates to guilt. All I know is what I watched on the field. Yes, there are things less than perfect. But there were sure a lot of times I was really impressed. Never thought that about Mike Glennon. As for Marcus Mariota. Forget the football stuff. I just think he needs a personality that doesn’t come off as timidity. We need to get the swagger back.
Comparing a defensive end to a Quarterback is no different than comparing a CEO to an employee. If you think just because the two play the same sport and wear the same uniform they both equate to being on the same level and should be treated indifferent, then we will simply disagree with one another. My only point with Winston is OFF-THE-FIELD, you can make excuses all day for the bad judgement, but I would argue where there is smoke, there is almost certainly fire.
You are dealing with men. Men follow leaders. Leaders set the example for others to follow, with no exceptions. I do not care how good this man can throw a football, his leadership off-the-field is enough to show me men will not follow him. And yes, there are outliers in the game of football. There are trouble-makers on every roster. But just like life, there are way more good people than bad, and it’s no different than any other NFL locker-room. You cannot lead without setting the example. Guys will put their heart on the line for you if you prove yourself not ONLY on the field, BUT OFF IT.
And finally…ask yourself this…Aside from talent, which everyone can agree every SuperBowl winning QB has above average talent (some more than others), but aside from talent what do almost ALL of them have in common….THEY ARE ALMOST ALL RESPECTED, HIGH CHARACTER MEN.
Just think about that before Tampa goes on the clock in a few hours and selects Winston. If they do, they will have made the statement to YOU the fans, that character doesn’t matter as much as winning. It’s EXACTLY the reason BAD ORGANIZATIONS REMAIN…BAD ORGANIZATIONS.
We’re in the final stretch here fellas. This is not the time to submit to exhaustion on this topic. If you’ve got something else to say on which QB we should draft, some other bit of data you can point to via a website link, I say smoke ’em if you got ’em! I don’t think Gruden is a QB guru, but I do think he knows more about the position than anybody at One Buc right now…http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/04/29/jon-gruden-i-dont-get-why-marcus-mariota-isnt-no-1/
