1. Trumps reason was not political. He thought the Ukraine should pay for the missiles themselves and shouldn’t be “aid” from the USA. I think you can make the argument that this was somewhat short sighted, but not politically motivated from what I can ascertain. See this. Not exactly Trump friendly but puts things into perspective by all accounts:

I’ve seen other articles that say the same thing.

2. If Trump truly was in bed with the Russians the “real” reason is irrelevant. The Russians would have said no, since they have a huge cat in the game, and he would have complied. It would appear that having a major impact on the Russian economy and a major political lever over a highly influential Western European country like Germany (See Russia turning off the gas to the Ukraine), would suggest the influence the Russians had over Trump was minimal at best.
