Under Herney, they made a series of bad contracts and often kept restructuring deals that kept pushing money into future years, much like what the Saints are doing now. I heard that Carolina has something like 25M in dead money this year and about a similar amount next year. And because of the guaranteed contracts that Herney gave to Smith and Williams, he can’t cut or trade either one until the end of 2015 without incurring more dead money. Gettleman is trying to follow the blueprint for contracts that the Bucs started a few years back, but has to get through cap hell in order to do that.
