Fundamentally speaking people like to trade back because it increases your odds of getting good players.  Every pick from the first to the last is a crapshoot so you are just increasing your odds with more picks. There are a lot of factors that go into a player being successful beyond just their physical abilities.  Things like scheme fit, ability to handle pressure, desire to learn and grow, ability to resist temptation after becoming instantly rich, clicking with their coaches, all kinds of things.  These things you cannot tell about a person until they are in the NFL.Look at the almighty QB position.  Most consider there to be 4 elite QBs in this league.  1 was the first overall pick and the other 3 weren't anywhere close to that.  2 of them weren't even first rounders.
