Greg Schiano Claims Michael Bennett is a “Relatively Effective” Sub Package PlayerBy Leo Howell - Oct 31st, 2013 at 3:30 pmbennett_zps7d593011.jpgSep 15, 2013; Seattle, WA, USA; San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore (21) dives for yardage against Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett (72) during the 1st half at CenturyLink Field. Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports Greg Schiano has quite the interesting perspective when it comes to former Buccaneer Michael Bennett, who has spoken out against the Bucs head coach. Here is an exact transcript from Thursday’s press conference at One Buc Place with Greg Schiano. •Reporter: How are they using Michael Bennett, Greg, and how effective has he been? •Schiano: Using him as a sub rusher, he’s not playing base, he’s coming in as a sub rusher both inside and outside. Been relatively effective. He has 4.5 sacks, I think. •Reporter: Is he playing both ends? •Schiano: He’s playing all over. He’s playing inside, too. He’s inside pass rushing as a sub rusher. The Seattle Seahawks have a ton of talent along the defensive line, and they use a variety of packages and schemes to make sure the best players are on the field at all times. Michael Bennett has play the most snaps out of any of those talented players. And according to Pro Football Focus, he’s second in the NFL among 4-3 defensive lineman at getting pressure on the quarterback. In fact, PFF gives him overall grades which place him third at his position, and his only downfall is penalties, of which he has amassed 7 so far. So he plays the run well, and he plays the pass very well. But he’s a “relatively effective” “sub package” rusher? Doug Farrar of Sports Illustrated sees things a bit differently, and claims that Bennett has become a secret superstar for the Seahawks. And the numbers, tape, and logic agree with Farrar. But Greg Schiano and the Tampa Bay front office decided to not offer up what was required to bring back Michael Bennett, instead opting for Da’Quan Bowers and Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, who have been in the doghouse and awful, respectively. So it’s fair that the Bucs’ head coach wouldn’t give glowing reviews to a player he allowed to walk for a very cheap, short-term contract. But it also shows a lack of talent evaluation and a bit of an embarrassing moment having to prepare for and face a player that could have been helping the Buccaneers win football games.http://thepewterplank.com/2013/10/31/greg-schiano-claims-michael-bennett-relatively-effective-sub-package-player/

There is a good reason why mark went into duck & cover mode.

I dont think Bennett is that great of a player..Lets not forget he is playing on a STACKED Defense.. he better have sacks..its just like gilberry now that geno atkins is out his production will go down.its the lack of the ends to get a decent push on this team.. McCoy is the only one getting push and then gets doubled.Could he have helped us? sure but we have more problems then DE's that dont get sacks.

Does it surprise anyone that Schiano can’t just admit Bennett is a good player and has been doing very well for the Seahawks? Dungy would have. Gruden would have. Morris would have. Schiano has too big of an ego though. The best he could muster was “relatively effective”….what a fuggin jaggoff.

+1 Wouldn't be surprised if Mark wanted to re-sign him but Schiano nixed it.

It seems like the FO made a decision between keeping Bennett and developing Bowers. Bowers was a high Dom draft pick under Rah, so I wouldn’t necessarily think that Schiano nixed keeping Bennett.

Any front office that considered Bennett did not offer a long-term contract. The Bucs did the same things. Bennett had his feelings hurt and ran off to Seattle without giving the Bucs the chance to counter, even after he said he would. Why is this still a story?

Any hopes of a Packer comeback died amidst a crimson wave of destruction.

So the fact that Bennett lied when he said he'd give the Bucs the chance to match isn't a big deal? Where's the outrage? Bennett is "relatively effective". I live in Seahawk land and while they appreciate the effort, no one is screaming for a long term deal. Again, folks are just in "pile-on" mode. 0-7 is enough. There is no need to spin a pretty black and white situation into something that it's not.

Bennett has 4.5 sacks through 8 games on a loaded Hawks defense and had 9 sacks in 16 games last year with a bunch of bums in Tampa. Seems pretty consistent to me.

Selvie was a journeyman scrub... Not our guy. I wonder if Rams fans cry as much you guys here do every time he makes a tackle. How long was he here for? 2 months in the offseason? Talib was a problem. Plain and simple and most wanted him gone the whole time he was here.Blount.... 3rd string back at NE whoop di do. Mike James is more valuable to us than Blount would have been.Biggers, Ogletree.... LOL.
