(USATSI) Earlier this week, the NFL sent out a memo banning non-standard/overbuilt facemasks for the 2014 season.According to research by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment, the non-standard face masks "more frequently fail safety and certification tests and aren't up to NFL safety standards."Meanwhile, Ravens defensive end Chris Canty, who suffered a detached retina in 2005, wears a non-standard facemask and a dark visor for added protection. Canty was unaware of the memo but he's clear about its implications."Not sure what the memo or new policy is, but it's simple for me," Canty told the Baltimore Sun's Aaron Wilson. "No eye shield and custom mask means I can't play. Eye would be at risk. ..."I invented it," he continued. "It's that simple. I can't play without it. I can't help it that other guys think it's cool and they want to wear it, too. It's a necessity for me."NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy says that Canty can apply for a medical exemption to continue wearing the facemask, just like he -- and three other players -- did last year."This is an important player-safety matter," McCarthy wrote in the email to Wilson. "There were four players who had medical approval in 2013, including Canty. All four have the opportunity to be re-evaluated prior to this season. Provided the players receive medical exemptions, they will be able wear the non-standard facemasks this season."This isn't the first time we've heard about the NFL banning non-standard face masks. In fact, the league made a similar proclamation prior to the 2013 season.

      Having a detached retina is no joke.Can't play if injured there, reinjury is always a concern, and the loss of an eye isn't a good thing in general.If he's paranoid, it's understandable imo.

      Just asking here, but have any of you almost lost an eye?Because IF you did, you would understand there is no depth perception. It would take his millionaire career from him. Not to mention, headaches and a life of being somewhat handicapped. I tore the film off my eye nearly completely (all hanging to one side. Trust me, driving is almost impossible, reaching for objects becomes difficult, and (in my case) there was no assurances that I would be able to see out of that eye again.There is no way he could continue his career if he aggravated it again. Justifiable and legitimate gripe, even IF a bit paranoid. With that kind of money at stake, I probably would be too.

      “I invented it” What? Like Al Gore invented the internet, maybe.Puppello invented the eye shield, and also the shark cage style face mask. Many have modified it. Kind of a stupid rule be the NFL but they're just protecting themselves from lawsuits and hopefully they're working on new and improved designs themselves.

      Yeah bucs, he didn’t “invent” it. It was done way before he came along.But I would say that maybe he made it "popular."And I say that in quotes, because he may not have actually made it popular, but, more or less, allowed other players to know they can do the same.And, just me thinking here, ..I would deal with the fine if I had to. There is a life after football, and you want to live it as healthy as possible.

      They talk about player safety, but are banning the use of these facemasks and visors without medical exemptions. Outside of snapping a few digits occasionally, these masks might actually prevent significant injuries for players.

      Waaaaah !!! I also would not want to block one of these guys and lose a finger because he is wearing a mask that looks like Hannibal Lector in a bear trap. Not sure why a large visor is not sufficient to protect the eyes . You can pick a standard mask and accessorize to make it as eye safe as any other. I call BS. This is all about the fashion statement.
