Marc Trestman details ideal Chicago Bears' backup QB By Kevin Patra Around the League writer NFL.comPublished: March 30, 2014 at 11:29 pm.
The backup quarterback market has been picked clean. With Mark Sanchez and Michael Vick becoming the latest signees in the quarterback shuffle, the current veterans left on the open market are as follows: Jimmy Clausen, Matt Flynn, Josh Freeman, David Garrard, Rex Grossman, Kevin Kolb, Colt McCoy, Dan Orlovsky, Curtis Painter, Brady Quinn, Rusty Smith and Seneca Wallace.Yikes.However, there are several teams still in need of a backup. The Chicago Bears, for instance, lost Jay Cutler's replacement, Josh McCown, to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Cutler hasn't played 16 games in a season since 2009, so odds are good someone other than him will see time under center in 2014. Coach Marc Trestman detailed his checklist of what he's looking for in a backup. "The No. 1 job of the No. 2 quarterback is to be ready to play and to play well," coach Marc Trestman said last week at the NFL Annual Meeting, per the Chicago Tribune. "... The best term is he has to go in and play efficiently. He can't turn the ball over. He's got to live for the next play." Trestman also harped on the fact that he wants his backup to be an asset in the quarterback's meeting room, where McCown excelled. The Bears coach insisted that current No. 2, Jordan Palmer -- with 15 career pass attempt -- could be that player in 2014. Given how Trestman helped revive McCown's wayward career, we can't simply dismiss the comments as coach-speak. However, looking at the grim group of replacements, the quarterback whisperer might know he doesn't really have a better option. Freeman is the most talented of the remaining candidates, but he doesn't fit with Trestman's checklist. A Rex Grossman reunion might be the best of both worlds, but he seems destined to join Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Cleveland. Given the other options, we sit some six months from Jordan Palmer possibly starting a game in Chicago.

I don't know, I think he's a couple quarter pounders past mobile, but that's just me. His first season, he flashed some serious mobility though. He had some arm strength, no doubt.

A year ago PR wrote how we should lock up Freeman and Dominick to contract extensions. Right now they’re both out of the league. And Freeman is being discussed as a backup QB at best right now. That's why when PR keeps ramming Derek Carr down my throat in their articles and how we should draft him, I get scared to death. These guys haven't proven to be the best or most objective talent evaluators lately.

I remember when I said years ago during his pressers he looked anxious and nervous, jumpy. Something was off. And I got ripped for it. Boid wins. Freetard was a dude who needed "pills" to keep him stable. Laughable.

Depends on what you mean by talent. Freeman is physically gifted but not a good QB. Drew Brees is short, slow and has a noodle arm but he actually knows how to play QB that is true talent in my eyes. There are many QBs that are physically gifted that don't amount to anything.

That's both sad and true all at once.Freeman played best in the sand lot mode but steadily regresses because he was resistant to coaching and learning coverage. He'll be a camp arm soon enough.I wish him nothing but candles, tiger pics and cold Taco Bell.

BINGO! Anyone who claims Freeman is one of the most talented QBs in the NFL is delusional.

Exactly!!!! Physically gifted is the correct term for Freeman; he is farrrrrrr from talented. Many people seem to mix the 2 descriptions up though.
