Kuechly is very good, but probably no better than the 10th best defensive player in the league.

And Lavonte/Kuechly will be linked for their careers, just like GMC/Suh. Just the way it is.“@GilArciaTBC: Luke Kuechly: 156 tackles, 4 INTs, 2 sacks, 0 FF, 7 PDs, 10 STF - Lavonte David: 144 tackles, 5 INTs, 6 sacks, 2 FF, 10 PDs, 18 STF”

They were drafted almost 50 picks away from each other. No one but Bucs fans compare them.

That's actually what I was saying. Bucs fans will continue to compare the two for their entire careers.

Sounds to me like you are saying Kuechly was taken entirely too early then , LOL

I agree, but I think the writers give him a lot of credit for his leadership/playcalling.  That his impact on the defense is much bigger than his individual play.I agree he wasn't deserving but I think that's where it comes from

I forget where I read it, but some new school metric measured this years Carolina defense in like the top 20 defenses of all time, so it's not that big of a stretch to give credit to the star MLB.

Players who deserved DPOY over Kuechly:Navarro BowmanRobert QuinnLavonte DavidRichard ShermanKuechly is a very very good MLB. He was definitely NOT DPOY. What a joke.

This is very similar to my list of who was more dominant.  Also, Alonso from the bills had very similar stats but could not even be named ROY.  I read somewhere that the panthers were inflating Kuechly's tackles too.

Troubling that Bucs fans can't distinguish the different between a Mike and a Will LB. By that logic shouldn't we be comparing Mark Barron & Morris Claiborne for the rest of their careers?

There are always multiple players who deserved each award. Every year. There’s not just 1 great player and the rest mediocre. Just because the Buccaneer fanbase believes Kuechly is overrated doesn’t mean he is. Out of those deserving they obviously felt he deserved the award. I wouldn’t expect the fanbase of a division rival to feel as though the player was deserving.

He wasn’t deserving though. When there are at least 5 better seasons from Defensive players, you don’t deserve the defensive player of the year.

So players of the same draft class with exceptional talent who play similar positions cannot be compared because one is a MLB and one is a WLB?  I'm actually highly surprised you're supporting the white guy in this thread. And there was a lot of times that David was functioning as the Mike in Schiano's defense.

Look at history. When picking DPOY they never pick the best statistical year. Never. Look at 2007. Bob Sanders. 97 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 2 INTs. Does that scream DPOY to you? No. But he made that defense great and they performed at a high level.No. The metrics for DPOY has always gone past things the casual fan can see or understand. It has more to do with having the most this or that. It has to do with what impact your plays has on the defense. LaVonte David was outstanding this year. But he played on a defense that was middle of the pack at best. Same with Robert Quinn, JJ Watt, Robert Mathis. Their impact obviously didn't translate into making their defense one of the best. Kuechly's did. And that's why he won the award.
