This Team Looking Like The 2002 Team Apr 13 2014, 2:39pmbuc-duo_zps7adee4b1.jpgYes, it is true this years Buccaneers team is looking more and more like the 2002 season team. Why exactly? Lets compare each team and look at a few key similarities. The Bucs 2000's dynasty has the best teams Tampa Bay has ever fielded from Dungy's early years to Gruden's later teams the Bucs always seemed to have a few common characteristics. Pound the rock. This was a common phrase used during the Bucs legacy years. It meant to just ram the ball down the opponents defenses throats. Mike Alstott and Warrick Dunn were the Buccaneers key contributors that pounded the rock. Every time Tampa ran the ball it was wearing the defense down little by little only opening them up for a big gainer. The 2000's offense was never explosive or even that great, they just did what was needed to be done. Fast forward to now, look at the offense Tampa Bay has. They definitely have the run offense to pound the rock and they should. With a triple threat baclfield and a revamped O-line this Bucs squad could be one of the top running offenses in the league this season. The Bucs of 2002 also never had a great Quarterback. They had a "game manager in Brad Johnson. A tag that is often associated poorly on a quarterback, in the league of stats today. Is being a game manager all that bad? Nick Saban once said "I don't think you can be a good quarterback unless you're a really good game manager." The LA Times also said this, "Trent Dilfer was not an "elite" quarterback, the 2000 Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl with a dominant defense and Dilfer as a game manager." Sounds familiar doesn't it Brad Johnson had a great all around team all he had to do was his job and they would win most of the time. Fast forward to now. I know Josh McCown put up great numbers last season, but he's no Tom Brady. Josh McCown won't be expected to win games for the Bucs. He will be asked to do consistent, because combine Josh McCown's game managing aspects with the rest of the offensive talent and you got a heck of an offense. Consistency plagued this team last season, don't expect that to be the case this year. Last but not lease the defense. Now it's be ludicrous for me to compare this years defense the the all-time greatest Buccaneers defense. The Bucs defense during their Superbowl run was once in a lifetime, it all just came together perfectly to make a nasty squad. The could win games by themselves and was the backbone of the team all year. Without one key component of that team the Bucs wouldn't have been the Bucs. Look at this year though, it all seems to be like deja vu. This year the defense has a star linebacker in Lavonte David, like Derrick Brooks in 2002. They have a pure beast in Gerald McCoy, like Warren Sapp. They have the all star secondary, so what's missing? Nothing this team should be extremely improved this year. Maybe not division champs, but damn near close. This Buccaneers squad is so balanced they should have no trouble making the Wild-Card, but time will only tell.poll_zps2c30f97f.gifhttp://www.bucsnation.com/2014/4/13/5610782/this-team-looking-like-the-2000s-team

They do not have a sure fire double-digit sacker coming off the edge like they had in Rice…they have a few guys that have the potential, but they dont have that player that has been consistent at getting sacks.

That 02 team also had 3 legit threats at WR……we currently have one.

We are closer to 2002 team than we are to the 2013 team. Yes, coaching matters that much and the roster moves were important.

I don’t think we have a QB as good as Brad on the roster. We lack the 2 other WRs we had.  Don’t think we are as good at DE, MLB and FS.

Plus the coaching was much better on that 2002 team.

The 2002 team was so much farther advanced. They had been to the playoffs the previous three seasons and finished 2001 with the #6 total defense. They knew how to play together and win. This team right now doesn't know how to do jack. We're back to hoping for 1997 again.

Every year people over hype this team and every year they under deliver.Even comparing this team to the 2002 team is absurd.

We don’t have a John Lynch, Shelton Quarles, Simeon Rice, Jurevicius, McCardell or a QB as solid as BJ but sure… why not lol. I do think we have a couple cornerstones on D that could be POTENTIAL HOFers if they continue to be dominant and we can get them some recognition via playoff berths (McCoy and David).

TBC said it and that makes the point much clearer to me than the article.Talent wise, I'd say we closer to that 02 team than we have been since then.To infer we are similar?  No.  Still a big margin and quite a bit to do.

Talent wise this is the worst team since the Raheem years and worse than any of the Gruden teams except maybe 2006.

We might not even hit .500 this season. I think we’re heading in the right direction, but I’m not ready to compare this team to our championship team.

Y’all are some negative bastards. How about you wait for the draft before you start digging the hole to bury us in.

Feel Real Good has it almost correct. We can hope the parts work well enough together to be like the 1997 team. At this point we can only guess, but on paper they look good enough to the 2014 version of the 1997 team. Add a few WRs and an OG and we might be a step or two ahead of that team given some of our top D players have a few years under their belt. But no we are NOT SB ready.

I think we'll be good every year, but we just haven't been. I'm in the belief that we're building a foundation for long term success. I just think there may be too much change to be a serious contender this season.  I hope I'm wrong, but if not I'm willing to take some lumps this season to kick some arse next season.

Idk about all that. Talent wise we are not there and the 2002 team had a vastly superior coaching staff.

Okay – for the record – not sure why Michaelbot decided to bring in this post – this is NOT an article on Bucsnation but a fanpost on their forum. Not sure if any of you care but just thought we should make that clear.

closer to 1997 than 2002!the thing that blows is if this is '97 all over again then we're waiting 5 years for all the pieces to come together and by then pieces will have moved on or retired so rebuilding all over again and then what? 2012 again?after all the "rebuilding" and "the plan" this team needs to fast forward to 2001 (not 2000 as i couldn't take 2 years of losing to the Iggles again)
