Or maybe he’s just pimping for a new stadium in Buffalo, although I don’t know why he would.http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/05/20/jerry-jones-makes-cryptic-comments-about-the-future-of-the-bills/?ocid=Yahoo&partner=ya5nbcsThe biggest splash from Monday’s edition of Cowboys Executives Say The Darnedest Things came when owner Jerry Jones suggested that the league could expand the postseason without union approval. Before folks in Buffalo prepare to re-issue T.O.’s key to the city to one of his various former employers for helping to possibly end a 15-year playoff drought, they need to consider what Jones also had to say about the future of the local NFL team.“Out of respect for Ralph Wilson, out of respect for everything he’s meant for the NFL — a Hall of Famer, but in my mind one of the founders of the NFL — I don’t want to get ahead of things at all in commenting about the future of the Bills,” Jones said Monday, via Tim Graham of the Buffalo News. And then came the comment about the future of the Bills:  “We always ought to be looking for ways to improve not only the growing the pie but also growing the fan base.  And to the extent that you can involve more fans in any team location is something to be considered.”It’s a not-so-subtle twist on the old Sam Kinision “live WHERE THE FOOD IS!” world hunger bit.  Jones wants the league to live where the fans are.  Specifically, where more of them are.  And more of them are in places like Los Angeles or Toronto than in Buffalo. The good news (or at least the not-as-bad-as-possible news) is that Jones’ comments point more to Toronto than a faraway market like L.A. or London.“We certainly want to create every opportunity we can to involve more fans,” Jones said. “At the end of the day, it’s my town against your town, Cowboys against whoever we’re playing.“To the end that we can create more rivalries and involve larger viewing audiences, populations, that’s something that you have to look at when you get a chance to, and that’s the debate between Buffalo and Toronto.”Of course, Jones may simply be trying to prime the pump for public dollars to build a new stadium on the American side of the Canadian border.“Every team needs to look at how they can continually be as fan-friendly as they can,” Jones said.  “I can tell you first-hand a new stadium is a step in the right direction.”

Would be a smart move.  Buffalo is only 260k people with a metro pop.  Of 1.2 mil.  And there are already two other nfl teams in the state.  Toronto is 2.6 mil with a 5 mil metro and is the biggest and most important city in Canada, which is untapped for the NFL.

Attendance from the last three games the Bills have played in Toronto: 2011 - Approx 500002012 - Approx 400002013 - Approx 39000

I thought I read somewhere, there is legal language that would prevent the Bills new owners from moving the team at all.  And they come close to selling out every home game. Last season they drew more fans than the Bucs.

Polian has explained this several times on Sirius radio...it appears there is a small window in which the team can be moved in around 2019. I believe anything can be overcome with the right legal arguments but it seems there are other factors which will likely keep them in the Buffalo area with Goodell being a proponent for keeping them there (apparently he grew up in the area). My guess is they'll lobby for a new stadium and market the shit out of the Bills to the entire upstate NY and surrounding areas to keep the team there...

Good points, thanks.Hopefully he doesn't go all David Stern, and just sit back and watch like Stern did.  When he allowed the Sonics to move to OKC, despite constant sell outs in Seattle.

Correct.  They are moving to Los Angeles in 2018.  The Dolphins will be moving to Toronto.

From a marketing and tv viewership perspective a Toronto team could be embraced on a national level.  That’s a 35 mil market.  Plus maybe remain upstate NY at the same time.  Getting a Toronto team is a much more practical way to open a new market to the league than London or Mexico City.  Plus the sport already has a presence in the country.

Didn’t realize it but Toronto is the 3rd largest English speaking market in North America.

maybe the Bucs should move to Toronto instead.  Or if a Buffalo moves then maybe the Bucs could take over in Buffalo.  Glazers are from upstate NY themselves.

Toronto could give zero **CENSORED**s about football.

they have drawn up to 55,000 for an exhibition game before.  If they had their own team I don’t think establishing a fan base would be a problem.  Plus all of Canada could potential become fans of the team.  The NFL wants to open up new markets.  This makes more sense than frickin London.

While agree we should stay out of fucking London, Toronto is not getting a football team anytime soon.

Buffalo has no ability to move until like 2017 or 2019 but after that the escape penalty becomes bearable.

It doesnt matter what USA sport franchise you move to Canada…the best hope you have is a DISTANT back seat to hockey.  Canadians have a ranking of sports they like to watch/go to: 1. NHL Hockey  2. Team Canada Hockey  3. High School/Junior Travel Hockey  4. College HockeyThe Bills have a great fan base.  If their team were moved (even just to Toronto) they might riot, although its NY so they wont have any firearms.

I’d expect a team in Mexico and Canada before there’s one in London. Each of them would have an entire country to pull a fan base from. Didn’t the last game in Mexico draw 100,000? Aztecs and Hosers, coming up.Next expansion should be to 36 teams, two leagues of three divisions with six teams each. Mexico, Canada, Los Angeles, and ?.

Growing the brand is really not in the best interest of the existing fan base. I am all for evolution but not at the expense of the current game.

How about we just let Canada annex Buffalo and then everybody wins?

Canada wins by getting Buffalo? My pops is from there, rest in peace.  But that place is no "prize" by any stretch.  Filled with loyal, diehard crysty ass fans, but if the Bills move, it would literally destroy the morale of that city for years.
