This is an interesting battle for me going into training camp. With the seperation in lovies regime from nickelbacks from outside cornerbacks this is a premium position in our scheme. So my question is does anyone think Leonard Johnson can steal this spot away from dj Moore? I know Leonard isnt very popular on these boards but I think he may well fit this scheme better then schianos. With lovie running a lot of zone Leonard has the speed and instincts to compete. Lj seems to be a good zone corner hes not very good in man to man because of his limited size but reading the quarterback and jumping routes seems to suit his game. I know dj Moore has the upper hand as of this point because of his previous time with lovie, Sort of like the Josh mccown effect on offense. He knows him previously knows what kind of worker he is. So does anyone think that Leonard can win this spot ? Or do ppl think Leonard a spot starter for us these last two years, will be a preseason cut and not make the final 53?

The way I see it, after Verner/Banks/Jenkins, everyone is on equal ground.

LJ is a decent dime guy but he simply isn’t a guy you want to line up in the slot as a nickel whether m2m or zone.  DJ Moore is more disciplined and as a result will win the spot IMO.

Yea I guess so adw Lj is undisciplined. Byt if lovie and mikal Smith can coach him up he may be a better option then Moore imo. It’s not like we’ve had the best secondary coaches under schiano. He very well may have more natural talent then Moore if it wasn’t for his slow 40 time he may well of been a 3rd or 4th rounder. He definitely needs refining though.

IIRC, LJ was halfway decent whan lining up in the slot as hybrid nickel cb/lb. Tackles decent in that area, and can also play the ball well (Det pick 6).Its when the bucs mistook him for an outside corner that he would inevidably get exposed.

Moore was pretty productive with Chicago so I think he’ll be the guy. LJ made some nice plays his first few games but since then has been mostly pretty shoddy. I think Moore has the upperhand but I wouldn’t put it past LJ to surpass him if Lovie’s scheme fits him better.

TBH, I’m not that sure who will end up in the slot and who ends up outside. Probably Lovie isn’t either, although he should have a decent idea after the mini-camps we’ve had. It could easily change before TC, tho’…

Leonard actually is bigger than DJ.  He has an inch or two and 20 pounds on DJ.

If LJ wins the nickle corner spot then we could be in for a long season. Dont forget, opponents will attack your weaknesses and will definitely game plan to burn LJ if he is going to be out there.

DJ Moore=NickleJohnson=DimeLovie trusts Moore. Competition over.

Yup.I've been saying since before this whole Revis thing went down, they still needed another starting caliber corner for the defense and they have yet to address that issue. Jenkins and LJ are awful.
