Lovie Smith says Mike Glennon can still win the starting job By Sander Philipse      Apr 13 2014, 6:22pmlovie_zpsab21e2cc.jpgRob Foldy-USA TODAY Sports Mike Glennon can win the starting job. Maybe. But probably not. Lovie Smith recently appeared on NFL Network to talk with Steve Wyche, and he was once again surprisingly candid. The head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was tight-lipped and hard to read in Chicago, but has been largely open and forthcoming as the Bucs' head coach -- certainly more so than Greg Schiano or Raheem Morris in recent years. Smith touched on Revis, who was indeed cut because of economics (because what else could it be), and noted that 4-12 isn't good enough. "We have a long ways to go," the head coach said. He was most revealing when talking quarterbacks, though. "I think as a coach you base your initial starting rotation, as I like to say, based on what you know about the players in general," Lovie Smith said. "And I know a lot about Josh McCown, I've seen him play, I've been in meetings with him, I've talked to him, I know his football knowledge, I know his leadership ability. And everything you're looking for in a quarterback, I think he has, so that was an easy decision to go with him. But as Josh will tell you, it's just a starting rotation." "That's no knock against Mike Glennon at all. It's about improving and strengthening the quarterback position. That's what we've done. Mike Glennon will be able to learn a lot from a veteran like Josh McCown. So those guys will work well together." It's hard to take this at face value when the team has brought in a slew of quarterbacks for private visits, signed Josh McCown, and the general manager repeatedly said that they can't pass up a franchise quarterback in the draft, while simultaneously noting that there are franchise passers to be had in this draft. Clearly, Glennon will have to beat out more players than just McCown -- and all of the players he'll have to beat out, will have been hand-picked by the new regime. Yes, nominally Mike Glennon will get a chance to win the starting job and beat out Josh McCown. Practically speaking, the chance that that really happens seems vanishingly small.http://www.bucsnation.com/2014/4/13/5611370/lovie-smith-says-mike-glennon-can-still-win-the-starting-job

They are talking him up so they dont hurt his trade value any further. Glennon is only a backup plan incase we miss the QB we are targeting in the draft

Yep. Obviously lovie licht and Redford looked at the tape and was not impressed by glennon. I can def see a draft day trade of him if we can get a team to bite and get the qb we want.

This is not a sales job to ensure Glennon’s trade value isn’t hurt.  Tampa is not drafting a QB with any of their picks day one or two.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all if he did beat out McCown. Would still like to see a stud rookie in the competition though. I just haven’t been able to get excited about Josh. Hopefully he proves me wrong.

yeah...if the two other QBs get killed by a meteor.....

which means he's got a chanceSan Hoyo, California: A coroner’s report released yesterday by police confirmed the presence of marijuana compounds in the system of Jonah Ellis, a 23-year-old man who was killed last Thursday just outside the town limits when struck by a meteorite.Police Chief Dirk Jackson refused to speculate whether this news would have an impact on the upcoming referendum on the legalization of marijuana in California this November, but noted that, “In the 10 years I’ve been in San Hoyo, 100% of meteorite fatalities have been marijuana-related, demonstrating a clear link. It’s certainly got to make you think.”Calvina Califano, spokesperson for Citizens Resisting Against Pot, had harsher words to say about the referendum. “If legalization passes,” she said, “you can absolutely count on an increase in meteorite strikes. And we won’t be as lucky the next time. People will be smoking pot outside day-care centers, and when that meteorite strikes, the collateral damage will be measured in mothers sifting through the rubble for the mangled corpses of their infant children. Marijuana: harmless? Let those legalizers tell that to the grieving mothers.”A representative of the Coalition to Legalize and Regulate Marijuana in California claimed that the meteorite strike was unrelated to marijuana use, but was unable to precisely explain why Jonah Ellis was hit.Scientists note that meteorites are formed from the debris of asteroids, and that there are literally millions upon millions of asteroids. If marijuana is legalized, it could take many years to exhaust the supply, and some say the damage to society could be permanent.

Really? I was expecting lovie to say “there’s no fucking way in he’ll I’m starting that guy at qb. He’s got no shot when we draft someone else”Honestly where exactly in this article did he say that glennon can win the starting job?

Lovie should have biotchslapped him with his ring hand and said, “start glennon!?…nikka please.”Lovie and licht have had a pretty tight lid on what they're going to do. Everything that they have said is towing the line bs. I love it. Very bb-like.

Lovie did not say Glennon can win the starting job.  He should have said it, but he only stated how he arrived at the “initial” decision.  Made up title.

Eh, ..we can't believe anything they say anyway. Everything is an assumption, as it should be.Right now, I assume it's going to be one of the three qb's, or evans. But hey, I could be wrong..a lot of defense and ol sprinkled about in the first and second rounds too.

I thought when Lovie was hired they said the players respected him for being honest with them. Seems he must be telling the players one thing and the media another if this is true because Revis and Williams are gone.

I do like a quiet coach.  Think about it, Belechick has gotten away with running Mouse Davis’s offense for 15 years and nobody calls him on it.  It’s a thing of beauty.

Glennon isn’t even going to be on the final roster opening day. He’ll be traded away and we’ll draft a QB that fits better for Tedford’s system.

I think we’ll get a third for next year for him after they draft a qb.They haven't shown they can trade away players and obtain more than they gave, and deciding after having all the qb's are in place seems more logical.

There are a few facts here:1) If Glennon is traded away "a few posters' collectives heads will spontaneously combust"2) If JFF is drafted "a few posters' collectives heads will spontaneously combust"3) If Bridgewater is drafted "a few posters' collectives heads will spontaneously combust"4) If Carr is drafted in the 1st round "a few posters' collectives heads will spontaneously combust"5) If no QB is drafted in the 1st round "a few posters' collectives heads will spontaneously combust"....I'm sure there are more we could add to the list.  I just hope the board withstands the draft day traffic because no matter what happens, it's going to be fun around here.

Im in the minority camp that thinks Glennon should be molded and given more opportunity as the QB of the future.  I think he has enough intangibles to succeed in the NFL.
