During Smith’s tenure with the Bears, they ranked higher than 23rd in offense only once. They have ranked 28th or lower four times and finished 28th in 2012. That, combined with the Bears failure to reach the playoffs five out of the last six years, caused them to release Smith. The best year they had under Smith, the year they went to the Super Bowl, was the year they drafted Devin Hester. But by the next year teams stopped kicking the ball to Hester and that was the end of that.In the nine years Smith coached at Chicago, only the Browns averaged fewer offensive yards per game.

Lets not forget that for all those “We just need to add an offensive mind to help him get over that hump” comments it isn’t that simple. The guy had Mike Martz as OC for a few years and they still stank, so it's no sure thing anyone will improve those numbers.

Smith has a history with the franchise, serving as linebackers coach in Tampa from 1996-2000. Smith was head coach of the Bears from 2004-2012 and compiled a career record of 81-63 and won the NFC North three times and the NFC Championship once (2006).http://miami.cbslocal.com/2013/12/30/report-lovie-smith-favorite-to-become-new-bucs-coach/

Jason Cole ?@JasonPhilCole 49mOther names attached to Lovie Smith coaching staff: OL Tony Sparano, DC Leslie Frazier and obviously Rod Marinelli in any capacity he wants

We have more talent on our offense than Lovie ever had in Chicago.

It all comes down to who the QB is. Tony Dungy couldn’t coach offense for crap in Tampa but put up a ton of points with Manning. If the Bucs have a bad QB, they’re going to have a bad offense whether Lovie Smith is the head coach or anyone else.

so much for Lovie having the Bucs job tied up.  he wouldnt be campaigning (all the tweets) if he did. A tweet first about an OC (because of the thoughts expresed in the OP) and then a tweet about NFL experience . .  and even Marinelli thrown in!Lovie must want the job because that list is tailor made for the Bucs

In Lovies last 3 years they were never top 10 in points per game (the only stat that matters). They were #2 this year. No thank you.

Sporano is solid for OLDon't think we can get him thought unless Oakland cleans house, and right now it looks like they are leaning toward keeping their staff

I think this deal has been in the works. Goodness the coaches named associated with Lovie will do wonders for this team and fan base!

Do you realize how bad their defense was this year? It was the reason they didn't make the playoffs.Plus, this year they had Martellus Bennett and Alshon Jeffrey broke out in his 2nd season.

Looking forward to many thrilling 10-7 victories, provided the D can score a touchdown. Oh, that’s right, that was the old NFL, nowadays you have to score points.

Don't knock it, it worked out great when we hired out "hot" DB coach as the new HC, oh wait.

Two COMPLETELY different situations. Lovie already has experience as a NFL HC and has had success. Awful, awful comparison.

They used to have Greg Olson who isn’t a bum.No more boring coaches. Go get one of the great college offensive coaches or a top NFL offensive coordinator. A solid d coordinator with our talent will be fine. We need an offensive mind.

Why would Lovie allow that info to be leaked? Why would Tedford allow it to be leaked and possibly take him out of the running for other jobs if Lovie hasn't already been hired by someone?

If Norv might get run in Cleveland, the Bucs would be silly to not wait to interview him for OC.

Because Lovie's agent is selling that Lovie is the perfect pick.  Just like the Kubiak report could be Kubiack's agent or even the Bucs pushing back . .lol  Seriously though. all of the Lovie tweets scream Bucs and Glazers becaue the Glazers often go to the far extreme when  they turn over coaches.  Lovie's tweets scream NFL experience . .  Rod Marinelli too . .  and dont worry about his offensive track record because he's got Tedford"

im concerned that Lovies comparison is equal to Dungy. a defensive minded coach who will put a good to great d on the field, but have a piss poor offense. Lovie having 5 out of 9 seasons in the 3rd or 4th place in the nfc north(when its the lions and vikings they should do better) isn’t what i would consider successful.  he stuck with grossman just like dungy stayed with dilfer. why settle for mediocrity,  granted its better than the abysmal display of coaching schiano produced, but lets leave the past in the past and get an offensive minded coach.

Lovie sounding a lot like what Marty did lat year.  Really wants a job.  Not so sure he's aiming it at us though.  And if he is it would be because we haven't shown interest so he trying to generate it
