I knew he’d reset the market for QBs. Didn’t know he’d reset the market for contracts in American sports.
Let’s see what Lamar Jackson does

QBs keep taking away more and more of the cap from teams. It’s not a one man sport.

Most important position and decent ones are hard to find. Pay them especially with a young stud like Mahomes.

Just a thought that popped in my head, is there any possibility that there would ever be a “qb cap” and then the rest of the team salary?

I predict the Chefs won’t draft a QB in the first round.
Mahomes’ 10-year extension is worth a total of $503 million. That includes $477 million in contract guarantee mechanisms, giving Mahomes opt-out years if those mechanisms aren’t exercised by the team.
In comparison, just to show an example of another QB with a different type of contract, another QB, Jameis Winston, signed a one year non-guaranteed contract for $1.1 mil with a $148K signing bonus which does not include extra revenue from his side job as an Uber driver.

Chiefs would want to win another SB in the next season or two because they’re going to start losing good players when their contracts are up with that cap hit on their books. Chris Jones is already demanding 20m+/yr or he’s gone.
Also they would be praying Mahomes stays healthy. An ACL or two and your stuck with 50mil/yr for an injured player and no avenue to replace him.

Bwuahahaha… too good
I’ll take my chances with Mahaomes for 50 million a year and build around him

@AndrewBrandt
In 2001 I gave Brett Favre a 10-year deal averaging $11.25M when Cap was $60M (18.75% of Cap).
Today Pat Mahomes gets 12-year deal averaging $37.5M (450/12) when Cap is $200M (18.75% of Cap).Please wait… -
[postquote quote=1294893]
Those numbers are wrong. It’s a 10 year deal worth 503mil so would be around 25% of the cap.

THIS. There’s nothing to debate or dislike. He’s a 1 of a kind player that in his 1st 2 years as a starter won league MVP and Superbowl MVP and is only 24. Pay him and move on.

12 total still has 2 years on current deal…10 year extension

Longest active streaks of 50+ QBR
(0-to-100 scale):Patrick Mahomes (36)
Matthew Stafford (9)
Derek Carr (4)
Russell Wilson (3)
Deshaun Watson (3)Including playoffs, Mahomes has started 36 games. In other words, he’s never had a bad game

Patrick Mahomes’ contract is 117 pages long.

Signing Mahomes to an extension is a great move… the length, not so great. I’d never sign any NFL player to a contract longer than 7 years.

Good to see you double downing on your shitty “Mahomes is overrated” take.
Please wait… -
Those numbers are NOT wrong….the $503 number comes from the total still left on the original 2 years….the TEN year value is at $477M So it is $477 for ten years, the other $26M comes for this year and next year.

You would think if you’re going to extend a guy with 2 years left it be atleast a smidge team friendly. Jesus

That money is not guaranteed. He got $150K signing bonus. That’s all he gets, and his trainer and agent get some of that.

That would be nice if true, but I think his number before the deal was $2.8 mil for 2020– so they have him on the cheap again this season.
They are LOADED for 2020…maybe even 2021.Then it’s Aaron Rodgersville.

There has to be more info to come. Judging by this, there’s no guaranteed money aside from the signing bonus. I can’t imagine a contract with as much as $503M, only has $10M of it guaranteed.

He won the lottery by being drafted by Reid. But, the NFL is now, and always will be a defensive coaches game. Offensive driven teams win single super bowls, defensive driven teams become dynasties. It’s weird…

Weird contract.
Such a low base salary– but tons of cash each year.
20 million total in 2020
Nearly 65 million total in 2021Only 10 mil guaranteed… with 140 mil medical settlement if he has career ender.

Yeah, very weird. I mean, let’s say the guy plays “well” over the next 3 years. Injured or not, they can just cut him because he’s not worth the investment anymore. To me, this is a lose-lose contract.

He will get figured out.
But Lamar Jackson won’t?

Um, Lamar has NEVER had a good playoff game.
Mahomes is miles better than Lamar.

No one is ever going to mistake Mahomes with someone more than just a one or two season wonder. There is nothing transcendent about his game. Fun gimmick player. Nothing more.

No much fail crammed into one response.
It’s amazing how you do it.

So, Mahomes is a gimmick player?
The dude who won MVP his first year as a starter and SB MVP in his second season?
Interesting take.
So, I’m assuming that you would think Winston is a superior player.
Is that the case? Simple yes or no would suffice.

It’s funny… if Jaboo applied his logic of EVERY OTHER TWO WAY QB to Jackson, he’d have a consistent stance on scrambling QBs.
But instead he looks at L-Ville and Clemson and says… well they played in MY conference with Jameis so THAT is why they are going to be amazing.
If Jackson played in the PAC12 he’d call him a gimmick.
Fact

There’s a huge difference. I have zero rooting interest in a QB based on where they played college ball outside of my own university. It’s just funny to see the media narrative around Mahomes and less so around Jackson, when Jackson is clearly the headier more improvisational QB. It’s weird…

Jackson in an offense that is 100% tailored to his skill set isn’t gimmick but Mahomes is?
Oh lordy…
Jackson is like Mike Vick… who was also a great player for awhile. Eventually your athleticism runs out (see Cam Newton).
Again, if Jackson played college at Washington he’d be “soft” “one trick” “system” etc.
