you can see the volume of material he has written on the topic.I had no prior opinion of Matt Baker.  Not following FSU, I did 0 reading on the subject prior to last draft season.  Wanting to form my own opinion I read a shit ton of articles and blurry eyed my way through police documents.  I was struck by the total one sided nature of the way Matt Baker covered the story.  Read through those articles (I think they are close to chronological from top down) and it becomes apparent that Matt's source was someone on Erica's initial legal team.  You will notice no mention of any the many problems with Erica's version of events, with entire articles devoted to the things that paint the possibility of Jameis' version being untrue.Matt quite literally built his journalism career on the back of this story.  I think what he did is sleazy, but welcome to journalism.  The man can still eat through, I'm not coming after his career.  Assigning him to cover the Buccaneers however, with Jameis Winston now #1 pick rookie starting quarterback, is possibly the most irresponsible (giving the TBT the benefit of the doubt) assignment I have heard of.  If the articles he wrote on the story were not enough:http://www.tampabay.com/features/humaninterest/jameis-winston-and-me-the-pain-of-covering-the-scandal/2219244How does the home town paper ever send that journalist to cover and ask Excellent research on the "little sheet" with a disgusting character assassination agenda. Any rational person can see the agenda and shameful one-sided slander campaign.  I agree 100% having this guy covering the Bucs is as bad as a having a local TV program director making sure that every Miami game is broadcast into the Tampa Bay area!I am favor of a petition to the Times condemning them for allowing this piece of crap anywhere near the BUCS.  If I still subscribed to the Times I would cancel my subscription!

Don’t beat Matt up. We get along very well and he has always been fair when he and I talked about it. Look if Jameis had a serious problem with it, then the organization would have probably notified the paper. And the Bucs aren’t going to ban a writer. As far as I know there haven’t been any issues. Matt has been around Jamies a lot since he was drafted, and I haven’t seen any animosity from Winston at all. Heck Matt continued to cover the team in Tally at times and at the Rose Bowl while this was all going on. FSU didn’t ban him, so neither would the Bucs. And if Jameis was as upset as some Noles fans, where is the lawsuit naming Baker and the Times? The one thing I will say, every journalist with any ounce of wanting to be credible would have reported the story if it were dropped in his lap. I would have. Would my narrative be different, probably, but he has a right to his style based on what he knew from the information he gathered. Matt doesn't have anything personal against Jameis. But his conclusions were different than mine or some of those here on the boards. Honestly I am embarrassed at the way some Noles fans went after him. Nothing wrong at all with disagreeing with him or criticizing his work. But the venom from a small percentage of Noles fans was really bad.I, personally, would just let it go.

So repetitive one-sided journalism is acceptable when there isn’t one shred of evidence that Winston committed the horrible crime he asserted in his one man smear campaign? As to Winston suing?  At this time that wouldn't be proper protocol and today non- ethical and dishonest journalism with no integrity is nearly impossible to get legal settlements. No matter what you put in print, no matter how hard you try to destroy some person's life smear journalists somehow escape consequences. There isn't person with an ounce of integrity or honesty that would consider Bakers opinion pieces fair or balanced.  Look at the number of articles!   That is the reason guys like even ufojoe go off the deep end. That is what takes guys like Harvey Updike to poison trees but at least he didn't go after a person so vehemently. I notice those that most influenced by Baker cling to any excuse making for his disgusting writing.  How about Baker writing about really serious proven crime than character assassination?A responsible journalist would not completely ignore the other side of any issue.Truthfully, as the all the evidence and testimony has shown there was no crime and the whole issue should have never seen the light of day. The TPD handled the issue correctly despite the smarmy remarks by the self - aggrandizing  Meggs.Anyone with an ounce of common sense sees the whole release of the issue by Baker was for a gold digging money grab completely transparent with the Civil lawsuit and documented 7 million extortion attempt by Pat Carroll. I doubt seriously anyone that has had to deal with what Winston has could possibly come away defending such journalism by Baker.  A totally irresponsible, hateful, and vindictive smear campaign transparently seen by the volume of articles.  Oh and when Baker gets the slightest criticism he cries like "a little beech" to his readers! There is special place for people like him and it isn't pleasant.  It will take years if ever for Winston to regain his reputation.

Just like Winston has to live with a most unfair character assassination, Matt Baker will forever be labeled for his most unkind and hurtful pieces he has written. Sorry he deserves no free PASS! IMO.

Good post, thanks for responding.  It is a completely unprofessional assignment imo.  You address the issue as a friend of Matt's, I have no reason to believe what you post is untrue.  As a reader, and Buccaneer fan, when I read a blurb from him on an early training camp practice where the only Jameis quote used is about him maturing, I wonder whether that is Buc's coverage or the journalists lingering animosity.  Over a story that affected him so greatly he wrote a piece detailing his experience covering the story.  I know I am in the minority with those thoughts.I am sure all journalists would jump at the story.  Especially a young guy with a family trying to secure his future in the business.Tell me in your opinion he did not write completely one sided pieces while covering the story.  You kind of danced around that issue.  He covered a player, who has gone on to be the Buccaneer's starting quarterback, in a totally unfair way.  My opinion is that makes him much less likely to cover him fairly now.  *Also, I did notice they had left him writing some general FSU coverage after his Winston rape allegation pieces.  Don't care about that, but agree that is another wildly inappropriate assignment.  That seems openly antagonistic to me.  Maybe my problem is as much with the TBT sports desk as it is with Matt Baker?*

So Youngone do you think that volume of articles with one purpose is fair and balanced journalism?

This coming from the poster with probably 100 times the number of posts complaining about the reporter then the reporter has written articles in his life.  You have zero evidence as to the personal intent behind each article written or even why so many were written. Heck, his editor, the papers owner or the tooth fairy might have demanded the numerous articles, even if they just repeated the same old thing in a new way, because it was selling newspapers. If that's true, does Baker, who is just doing his job as his boss instructed, deserve so much vile and 1000's of posts attacking his character? The irony of this is how you Runole, go after a person so vehemently, using your "fan loyalty" to disguise your disgusting writing, constantly trying to assassinate his character, smear his reputation, without any real knowledge of the facts or reasoning behind it and thus only present an unbalanced and one sided view of events. You sir are very guilty of exactly the same thing you accuse this reporter of.  The worst part, you actually had a valid point at the beginning of it and it was fair to mention it and even express your concerns.  But just as you claim the reporter has, you have clearly jumped off the deep end and gone past anything most normal people would consider justified.Mark is right, its time to just let it go.  Winston has.  FSU has. 99% of FSU and Bucs fans have.  Can you?

That Matt Baker dude does suck as a “journalist”, but the media that covers the Bucs is shitty in general.  No need to do actual research or learn the ins and outs of football and really understand the game.  I mean, look at this Buc Fan Joe fella.  He tries to write in the 3rd person to make himself relevant.  Spoiler:  It’s not working.

LOLYou have to understand I have "my own set of little beeches" that act just like Matt with their misplaced agenda.  That they wish to defend his journalistic integrity is their prerogative even if it is 100% fallacious. I imagine they will be cheering wildly for every mistake Winston makes on the field during the coming season.  I find that incredibly disturbing for anyone professing to be a BUC fan.Winston has had the most polarizing character assassination that I have viewed towards a sports figure in my lifetime.  Cassius Clay (had social media been present) might have been worse. All for someone never charged or arrested for any crime.  Citation for Crab Legs doesn't even move the needle.. IMO Hey that underbelly of racists,  outrageous men hating feminists, and UF ,UM, and other CFB boys that don't like FSU will always be there. It is their nature. Hmmm? Perhaps they should let their dislike of Winston go?The sad ones are those so easily manipulated by guys like Baker. By the sheer volume of articles Matt was successful.  That it manifests itself by personal attacks on me?  entertaining!

And there goes Runole... Good job TK.

So Youngone do you think that volume of articles with one purpose is fair and balanced journalism?

A journalist writing on a big story at the time, doing his job. He should be crucified.

Being the Press Secretary of team Kinsman is not doing your job as an independent, dispassionate  reporter...it is actually the opposite of doing your job.

So you know what is funny. We literally have entire news organizations, such as Profootballtalk and nearly the entirety of New England sports network, call for the head of one Chris Mortensen of ESPN because eight months ago he wrote an article regarding New England's' deflated footballs was technically incorrect. An entire section of the media is dedicated to the valor of Tom Brady and shouting down anyone that even questions the pureness of Brady...some going as a far as to call for one's job if he crosses Brady...While on this site, a reporter that for the better part two years has been the mouthpiece of the Kinsman camp, writing, at best, bias hit pieces against Winston...Well, now...people (including Winston) should just get over it. I have even heard people on here describe Winston as "petty" for countersuing Kinsman...that it showed a "lack of maturity." But Tom Brady, who has yet show any evidence that contradicts the NFL's essential allegations against him: he generally knew that his footballs were being deflated and refusing to cooperate with the NFL, is cheered on for litigating against the NFL...

But Tom Brady, who has yet show any evidence that contradicts the NFL's essential allegations against him: he generally knew that his footballs were being deflated and refusing to cooperate with the NFL, is cheered on for litigating against the NFL...

Nope.  I just don't think he should be covering the Bucs  or Winston.

You have to understand I have "my own set of little beeches" that act just like Matt with their misplaced agenda.  That they wish to defend his journalistic integrity is their prerogative even if it is 100% fallacious.
is this a shot at mark cook?

I think so, it looks to me like Runole is calling MC a "racist,  outrageous men hating feminist"Mark, do you have a copy of Little Women on your night stand?

Nope! not at all! but if you made that conclusion from what I wrote, I seriously question your reading comprehension abilities.  I would classify you as one of the easily and naively led by Bakers smear campaign.  One day you hopefully will learn to disseminate issues better to determine truth.Winston character assassination was outrageous.  Any rational person can see this.

1st, you really need to learn how to use the 'Quote' feature properly. It really isn't that hard. But I fixed it for ya...againAnyways, I agree character assassination of any type is outrageous.  But how you can justify the character assassination, personal threats against Matt and his wife and "wishing he would die of brain eating cancer" as rational is what is stunning. How you can not see that you are doing EXACTLY what you accuse Matt of doing is simply unreal.

I have never contacted Baker.  Oh and because Matt claims he has had personal threats I should believe him?Just like I believe Kinsman?  yeh Right!Hey every fan base has their Harvey Updikes? Some have more than others.  When has any FSU fan claimed they woud not renew their season tickets if a UF player was drafted? One simple question?  Do you believe Winston is guilty of the complaint? YES or No

Actually, there were some posters here, most likely UF fans, who said if the Bucs passed on Tebow they would in fact quit being Bucs fans.  And others. most likely FSU fans, claiming they would quit if he was drafted by the Bucs. So anything Matt says for the rest of his life is never to be believed simply because he wrote articles that you did not agree with? What is your standard for credibility? It sounds like it's just being an FSU fan.  As for the complaint.  Please do a little research.  You won't get so much mud on the face.  I have never once accused Winston of rape nor said he was guilty of it or any sexually related offense.  In fact I too have said I find Kinsman story a little troubling. Research it.  See Runole, this is another area you  constantly go off the deep end.  To you, any poster who said anything positive about Mariota must be a Winston hater.  If we preferred to draft Mariota, it can only be because we think Winston is a rapist. It is absolutely impossible for any person to ever think Mariota was the better choice based on what they wanted as a QB for the Bucs.  it can only be personal.Take your dam blinders off.  Stop the fake witch hunt for things that simply don't exist or at aren't relevant anymore and join the rest of the Bucs fans for what is hoping a good year of Bucs ball.

Absolutely! And what is wrong with that? By the way, why didn't you mention the other part?  Afraid of the truth ?Signed,Freddy, the guy that clearly preferred Mariota before the draft but has since bought his daughter a Winston jersey.

Good for You!  What other part?

Are you really that blind,  read the signature, especially the part about "has since bought his daughter a Winston jersey." ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Isn't that what you wanna do with this Baker guy?

Nope.  I just don't think he should be covering the Bucs  or Winston.

Jimbo disagreed with you last year, and Lovie disagrees now.

Link?  Are you sure that Jimbo said that?  Jimbo has said multiple times how mad he is at the media and how unfair it was to Winston.

Lovie didn't seem all that pleased with the other Kinsman tool that ambushed him at the coaches breakfast before the draft.  Cole?  Has Lovie mentioned anything about Matt specifically?  Mark's approach to this is wrong headed imo.  Ban him?  Lol, no.  This is a media outlet, that in theory wants the most access and the best coverage for their readers.  Seems to me like the worst choice of any of their staff they could assign to cover the Buccaneers.

The Times should assign another from their pool because they want their guy to get the best stuff for their paper.  Matt Baker will never get the best from Jameis Winston.  Unfortunately for Matt, Jameis now starts at quarterback for the Buccaneers.  Matt should be covering other things.  Also, just from a running a business standpoint, why alienate any potential customers if you don't have to?  However "embarrassing" you find your Nole brothers, there seem to be a decent amount of them that find Matt Baker highly objectionable.  A good number of those folks already support the Bucs, and more now potentially.  I don't understand why a failing business would make a business decision like that when there would seem to be plenty of other assignments Matt could be covering.Journalists have much longer lifespans than professional athletes.  It's not like Matt will never get his shot at covering the Bucs.

Both parties acting professionally in a formal setting indicates an acceptance of Matt?  You see Matt lining up an exclusive feature with Jameis in the near future?  He has the biggest local rag behind him.  Will it take some ESPN style draft night snubbing of the TBT to indicate displeasure?Again, you seem to accept that Jameis would not do anything for Matt the team didn't require of him.  Yet you defend the Times decision to assign him to cover Jameis.  Can they?  Well of course they can.  And I would expect Jameis and Lovie to conduct themselves professionally.  Should they?  Hell no.  Hence the thread title.

If you think the BUCS are going to give Baker great access to the BUCS with his history towards Winston I believe you are sadly mistaken. It precisely little dweebs like Baker that turn coaches into Belichick's all over the league. This is why less and less access is given to the media. One of the greatest reasons PWR is successful is they are fair and balanced.  Baker isn't.As Threadkiller's post pointed out fantastically.  Can any rational person think such coverage was due a crab leg citation which is the only thing worth mentioning concerning Winston off the field? That is how ufo joes are created as well as most of my fan club.  They are easily influenced by unethical journalists.  Even on this thread they love them some Matt Baker. Can we agree that Baker's obsession is unhealthy and ridiculous?

What has Jameis done to Matt?  No one is confusing Matt Baker for the lead Buc writers at the Times, but what difference does that make?  He is apparently fetching sound for them.  Why would the Times chose him to be their representative asking Jameis questions?I don't know how posting a thread and talking about a topic is overblowing it.  Unless you are talking about Runole, and this happens in literally every thread he posts in.Mark, do you feel Matt covered the story in a way that was fair to Jameis Winston?  If you do, then it is completely logical to feel his assignment legitimate.  You said earlier his conclusions were different than yours, what does that mean in plain language?  He feels Jameis Winston is possibly/probably a rapist.  Again, this is an appropriate face to put in front of Jameis to ask him about his practice that day?

Well Matt was covering the Bucs before Jameis was even drafted. So it wasn't like they just decided to put him on the beat. And honestly I didn't read all of his articles. I can't say what was fair or not fair. I can see how some Noles fans could construe it as a witch hunt or something personal. But knowing Matt, and spending a lot of time talking to him, I do not think he believes Jameis is a rapist or not a rapist. I think he put out what he had, as all reporters would do. Myself included. I will say the things I read of Matt's were more fair than a lot of pieces I read. I don't want to get into my personal feelings about it, because ultimately it doesn't matter. I decided to let things happen and play out. I have my personal feeling, but by sharing them, it will open another can of worms that I really don't feel like dealing with. I do believe we have to trust the justice system though. And it isn't perfect by any means, but that is all we have to stand on. I have my sources in Tallahassee that I believe and trust very much. Including players. Jameis isn't a perfect individual, and he would tell you that, but I do not believe that it was an illegal act that took place.I also do not believe Matt is unethical by any means as well. And I was joking about hugging it out.And now this thread will self destruct in 12 hours lol.

You have to understand I have "my own set of little beeches" that act just like Matt with their misplaced agenda.  That they wish to defend his journalistic integrity is their prerogative even if it is 100% fallacious.
Nope! not at all! but if you made that conclusion from what I wrote, I seriously question your reading comprehension abilities.

YES or No

mark Cook....can you verify that Baker and his family were threatened...please...so we can shut up this loser.

I never saw the actual threats, but I am sure there were some. Heck I know a PR staffer in the NFL that literally received one after denying this person a credential. Lots of nuts out there.

Yes today it is absolutely amazing that someone actually dare to call out Baker for his Winston smear campaign in the Bay Area...  One day hopefully you will hold ethics, integrity, and honesty at the same level that I do.Deliberately promoting your ignorance is not any more compelling than the voluminous articles by Baker against Winston.

Jimbo disagreed with you last year, and Lovie disagrees now.

      Indeed... the problem is systemic.
