I’m personally a very big fan of Mayock, both as a draft analyst and for gameday colour (not to mention he preferred McCoy over Suh. With his latest top 5 coming out, I thought it would be useful to look at previous top 5’s. Too often I feel we don’t examine draft analyst’s past examinations (and they’ll obviously be wrong lots – just like NFL teams).2008: http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/09000d5d80406b71/article/mike-mayocks-draft-prospect-rankings-updated-april-152009: http://www.clanram.com/forums/f109/mike-mayocks-2009-top-prospects-each-position-updated-4-15-09-a-34788/2010: http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d817178e3&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true2011: http://nflfootballnow.com/2011/04/12/mike-mayocks-top-5-by-position-nfl-draft/2012: http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/09000d5d827a70e8/article/draft-positional-rankings-pro-days-influence-player-stocksThe two things that strike me are (1) how some positions have absolutely NO good players in some years. Look at the 2008 DTs - no player in the top 5 was anything but a bust and the best player in the draft was Red Bryant. (2) Overall I'm impressed with Mayock and he does seem to hit on more than say a Mcshay (and I wonder how he'd compare to the average team?). You also have some strong against-the-grain picks (McCoy over Suh, Earl Thomas over Eric Berry) and some amusing flubs (Sanchez over Stafford, Gabbert over Newton).

Really interesting list – thanks for posting it.Like you, I am astounded by the number of players that turned out to be complete busts. Always something to keep in mind when "evaluating" our own front office. Also I agree with you that Mayock is def. on of the best in the business. He clearly has his own opinion instead of just looking at what everyone else says. Can't wait for the draft now!!

I make fun of some of these guys, but in fairness, they are ranking players for a “consensus” team. It isn’t easy, and like you mention, tog, there are drafts where the players at a certain position stink. They also don’t control where these guys go, aren’t privy to interviews (deep insight into coachability and mental makeup, etc). Plus, they are fed an inordinate amount of BS from teams that want to throw them off the track.
