GRADES FOR BROWNS-BUCSHere are the top takeaways and highest-graded players from the Browns-Bucs preseason game.JORDAN PLOCHER    ProFootballFocus.com 6 HOURS AGO    pff_zpsa7y3uaww.jpg(AP Photo/Phelan M. Ebenhack)Here are the top takeaways and highest-graded players fro the Browns-Bucs preseason game:Buccaneers:–Rookie quarterback Jameis Winston took a step back from last week’s positive performance with a disappointing outing against the Browns. Winston was hampered by the pass-protection performance of his offensive line, as well as running back Doug Martin running into Winston during one of his pass attempts, almost resulting in an interception. However, his protection wasn’t solely to blame, as Winston was inaccurate at times and continued to show a tendency for throwing passes that defenders are able to get their hands on. Winston ended up with a -2.3 grade for the game.–Defensive linemen Lawrence Sidbury and William Gholston both made strong cases to stick around in back-end roster spots. Both showed exceptional quickness off of the snap to get into the backfield and disrupt running backs, as well as the ability to stand up and shed blockers. In only 42 combined snaps they totaled seven run stops.–Rookie O-lineman Ali Marpet continued his preseason struggles in pass protection. In one four-play stretch he was beaten in pass protection, allowed a quarterback hit, committed a false start and gave up a sack. Marpet’s pass-protection grade in his 32 snaps amounted to a dismal -3.2.–On the plus side for the offensive line, Evan Dietrich-Smith put up a great performance in his 32 snaps at center. Dietrich-Smith only allowed one quarterback hit, while posting the best run-block grade of any lineman on the night with a +2.3.Top graded players:C Evan Dietrich-Smith (+3.8DE Lawrence Sidbury (+2.3)DE William Gholston (+1.7)RT Gosder Cherilus (+1.5)DT Clinton McDonald (+1.4) Browns:–CB Charles Gaines allowed only one catch for four yards in the four passes thrown at him and earned the highest pass-coverage grade of any defensive player for the Browns this preseason with a +3.2 grade.–DT Jamie Meder showed up well rushing the passer in 19 snaps, utilizing his strength in bull rushes to get to the quarterback. Meder also posted three stops in run defense, grading out at a +2.9 overall.–QB Josh McCown delivered his best overall performance of the preseason, leading two long scoring drives and finishing them off with touchdown passes. McCown utilized his legs well, too, by getting out of sacks and gaining positive yardage amounting to a +1.1-rushing grade.Top graded players:QB Josh McCown (+3.6)CB Charles Gaines (+3.2)OT Andrew McDonald (+2.1)DT Jamie Meder (+2.9)WR Travis Benjamin (+1.6)

I like what I’ve seen from Sidbury so far this season. If he keeps up his play into the regular season, he is definitely worth keeping around.

Sidbury and Gholston battle has been competitive and down to the wire (tomorrow).  I would love to see the Bucs keep both but that isn’t realistic.I would prefer Sidbury over Gholston given the Bucs need to bring heat from the edge.  If they can keep Gholston though that I would be the end of Spence's career with the Bucs.I am not sure how much the Bucs organization likes Spence compared to Gholston.

I agree. It's been one of the areas where there hasn't been much to be concerned about. I agree that if both are kept, Spence could easily be the odd man out.

Maybe the blitzes really made things look a lot worse for the Oline then it really was because Im surprised EDS graded out well.

Hope we would choose Gholston over Spence. We are already loaded at DT and Gholston provides better versatility being able to play on both the inside and outside. Not to mention, I think he's just a better player than Spence.

EDS is the last guy I would replace on the o-line.  Average is good enough for offensive center.  Average at Left tackle or guard?  Can probably kill your QB however and limit rushing opportunities for the offense.People have hated on the OC since Wade started to lose a step ignoring the trash he was playing with at guard next to him.  Faine was hated because of how much money he received and how overated he was.  Zuttah and EDS are not amazing players but competent NFL players.  Having Davin Joseph at RG for such a long time with LG a revolving door has really made the offensive line look bad the last decade.

Yeah I like Gholston to further develop as inside pass rush specialist.  Spence is pretty much limited to being a NT even for this scheme or any one gap scheme really.  Maybe he would make for a good 3-4 end for another team.Defensive line is actually good with depth but lacking an impact pass rusher to put it over the top.

Spence is on the PUP list. He doesn’t factor much into the discussion. Was Gholston playing DE? I can't remember and I've dumped the video.

According to Scott Smith the earliest Spence can be activated to the roster is 9 weeks. He talks about this in the last Buccaneers insider video.http://www.buccaneers.com/videos/videos/Insider-First-Round-of-Cuts/af72e0d9-6481-4d62-a88f-b68c27b1beba

Exactly. My point is that Spence doesn't likely affect the decision-making at DL unless all that much since at best he's back week 9.

He bounced inside and outside, IIRC.

Article is spot on. It's fun to look at but they have no idea what they're looking at. You don't even have to be involved in football to do the grading, you just have to apply during the offseason.

A friend of mine called them up awhile back last season. He had a problem with something they wrote about his Seahawks. He said the guy came across as a real douche on the telly.
