Those Saints are always going to be a problem.

This doesn’t help the Saints cap situation, it’s just another PR stunt by Brees. Only way he can help their cap situation is if he gives back money already paid to him.

Freed up 24 mil for them in 2021.

        Big $. That’s 3 or 4 signings or 1 or 2 big ones.

No it didn’t, he was never getting the money because he’s retiring. They should just release him and designate it as a post June 1st cut and they would save more money.

Colts paid Andrew luck when they didn’t need to.

        Brees would’ve deserved the same.

Saints fans are delusional. They seem to think this allows them to keep their players and ADD free agents.

They’re still 80 million in the red.

Y’all will be surprised at how resourceful the saints can be, at this point nothing would surprise me with them.

They’ve been playing this game (successfully) for years now

They aren’t resourceful and there isn’t any magic going on. They just borrowed money from future years to an unprecedented extent. That’s what got them in this situation in the first place.

They of course can try to move another 80 million to future years. They would only lose 5 or so starters that way, but it would cripple their ability to build a competitive roster for years to come.

They simply ran out of road (to kick the can down).

Sure it freed up $24 mil but they don’t have a quarterback. But any new QB is going to cost more than that unless you draft a rookie. The Saints have the 28th pick. They’re not going to get their QB of at that the near future . They got lucky with Brees, but thats not going to happen again.

It didn’t free up anything for the hundredth god damn time. Brees was always going to carry a dead cap charge of $22.6M ($11.3 in 2021 and 2022 if they spread it out). Saints are still $70M over the cap with very little moves they can make.

      https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/cap/

      1. Cut Kwon saves $13.2M
      2. Cut J. Jenkins and designate it as post June 1 saves $10.6M
      3. Cut Emmanuel Sanders and designate it as post June 1 saves $8.5M

That’s still $38.4M over the cap without anymore obvious moves to make and still have Hendrickson, Marcus Williams, Sheldon Rankins and Jameis as UFA. And it pushed $17M of dead cap to 2022.

It’s not that no one sees you saying it. It’s just that you’re wrong so everyone is ignoring you.

If the Saints simply released Brees and designated him a June 1st cut they would be in a better cap position. So explain what Brees actually did to help the Saints.

That’s what they are going to do.

Lowering his base salary will allow them to keep Brees on the roster till June and be under the cap when the new league year starts in March. That’s the sole purpose of this move.

Brees counted for $36.15 million ($25 million base + $5.75 million signing bonus + $5.4 million restructure bonus). If Brees retires the Saints can then hold him on the roster until June 1 and then place him on the retired list on June 2nd, allowing them to split his $22.65 million in dead money across two years- $11.15 million in 2021 and $11.5 million in 2022.

That’s nice of Brees to help out his team, but also nice of his team to pay Brees $12.65 mil to essentially retire… a buyout.

Wouldn’t it be more prudent for the Saints to just eat it all now, versus spreading it out?
