      So USF has artificial turf?

They have 3 practice fields. Two are grass and one is field turf.

Ok, even though I may disagree on the Bucs evaluation of Gilkey, I can still accept the Bucs keeping him around if they see something talent wise that we spectators don’t. But putting him on the first string OL? I just cannot wrap my head around this. After his horrendous play last year, how do you line him up first string?? I can deal with him earning his way back if he shows vast improvement, but by gosh, its the first day of training camp. PR please explain this conundrum to me!!!

Easy. How do you teach Marpet anything when McCoy just rag dolls him every play? With the #2’s you have a basis to teach from. Feel bad for Gilkey.

Both Smith and Marpet have to earn their way to the first string. I’m not a fan of Gilkey either (although the recent story has tempered my feelings a bit toward the guy), but he IS likely better than Marpet is at this point, as is Edwards.Make them earn it.

I have no problem with any player "earning their way" into anything. But the reality is Gilkey was a seventh round pick who displayed his seventh round status by his awful play last year. He was not viewed as good enough to even make the Cleveland roster and the Bucs turned around claimed him off waivers and made him a starter which proved to be a disaster. Marpet is a 2nd round pick with all expectations of being a starter. So again, how is Gilkey on the first string?? Again I have no problem promoting him to first string if he proves it during training camp and pre-season, but I don't see the logic putting him first string now when he has proven zilch to this point.

I agree, although Cleveland had a better offensive line than we had, so you really can’t hold that against Gilkey. He was in the last cutdown.I think that he only gets the nod because of experience. He has it and Marpet doesn't, therefore Gilkey gets the first reps. But the depth chart honestly hardly exists at this point, so it's really not anything to worry about. If by the 3rd preseason game Gilkey is still on the 1st string, then I'll worry. Until that, it's just headgames as far as I'm concerned.

If Gilkey or Edwards are better than Marpet and Smith right now then we made the wrong picks. Our borderline 1st round future franchise left tackle and second round guard shouldn’t even be in competition with practice squad level talent their entire careers, rookies or not. Both those dudes better be ready to step in…the talent on our OL is too bad for them not to come in and immediately be more talented than everybody there besides Mankins and maybe Dotson.

The depth chart for the trench players doesn’t mean anything until they put pads on.  However, I am surprised that Sterling Moore is still being played on the outside.  I don’t think he was brought in to the team to be a fourth string CB?  I mean it is good to have depth, but nickel corner back was more of the pressing issue last year unless the staff feels otherwise.  The safety position looks shaky but it will be competitive with six of the top safties competing for four spots. On offense, I wouldn't be surprised if the Bucs keep one undrafted rookie WR and the other undrafted rookie WR on the PS.  Herron isn't going to make it if he doesn't step up.  And on a final note, it looks like ASJ isn't going to be the starter with Wright on the team.

Tim Wright is the starter ahead of ASJ right now….? There’s no damn way.Adam Humphries looks like he could be the undrafted dude to make this team. Jameis likes him.

      >> However, I am surprised that Sterling Moore is still being played on the outside. <<I wonder if it's possible that was a condition of signing with us, that perhaps we were supposed to give him a valid chance at an outside corner position? I think Moore probably does end up in the nickel spot, but he should already be familiar with that from his time in Dallas. I don't blame Lovie or Frazier taking a look look at him on the outside. Injuries happen, maybe we want to see if at this point Moore is a better replacement option than Jenkins.

It’s a damn shame that there were guys on the market this summer that can legitimately rush the passer and we resorted to giving up a draft pick for George fucking Johnson and paying him like somebody who’s been a starter for years. This defense is still talented pretty much everywhere besides the DE spot. We have two guys starting at those spots that have never showed a thing in their careers besides in flashes last season. Damn shame.

i agree its a shame we gave up a pick for johnson, but we are paying him 3 years 7 mil?  peanuts imo if he gives us 6-8 sacks.

I mean Smith was borderline dominant for half a season. That’s not bad for a guy who was really only given half a season to play. It’s the other end I’m worried about. On another note, I really love our defensive tackle rotation. McCoy is a beast, McDonald is so underrated and had his moments of dominance. Melton can get after the passer, and Spence and Bowers both are more than capable backups who can provide spot starts.

I think some of you guys are reading way too much into the depth chart this early.  They probably started whoever was less soaked from the rain.
