Patriots re-signed RB James White to a one-year, $2.5 million contract.

White will return to the Patriots after seeing his usage decline in 2020. New England’s backfield is shaping up to be a fantasy nightmare, as per usual. White won’t have much fantasy relevance unless the team struggles with backfield injuries or shifts to a more pass-heavy approach in 2021. Don’t count on the latter.
      ——-

Bears signed RB Damien Williams, formerly of the Chiefs, to a one-year contract.

Williams, released by KC this month after opting out of the 2020 season, has plenty of familiarity with Chicago’s coaching staff. He worked with offensive coordinator Bill Lazor in Miami and knows head coach Matt Nagy’s offensive scheme from their days together in Kansas City. Williams’ addition to the Bears backfield very much complicates David Montgomery’s path to the massive volume he saw in 2020. A mere four running backs last season had more total opportunity (rushing attempts plus targets) than Montgomery, who thrived in a series of great late-season matchups. J.D. McKissic, amazingly, was the only back to run more pass routes than Monty in 2020. That’s not happening again. Pass-catching specialist Tarik Cohen coming back from injury and the Williams signing are major hits to Montgomery’s usage and upside in the Bears offense. Williams will be a frequent target of Zero RB drafters in 2021 seasonal leagues.

The Tampa Bay Times’ Joey Knight reports the Bucs have made “no real headway” with Leonard Fournette.

Fournette is taking his sweet time to sign after emerging as Tampa’s No. 1 back in the final month of the 2020 season. Seattle was reportedly interested in Fournette before they re-signed Chris Carson — a move that probably means the Seahawks are off the list of potential Fournette landing spots. Fournette could be in line for an unreasonably rich short-term deal with a bad team after looking the part of an every-down back in December and January. His departure from Tampa would open the starting job to Ronald Jones, who was dinged up in the final month of the 2020 season.

Whatever. We have Rojo. We have a 3rd round pick from last year that barely played. We have a draft coming up. I’m not concerned at all about RB.

      Exactly.

If Lenny wants a big payday, then let him get it somewhere else.

Besides, I have a feeling the brass is looking at RB @ #32

Several mock drafts from so called “experts” have Clemson RB Etienne falling to the second round. I don’t believe he will fall to the second round, but if he is available at 32, the Bucs should draft him.

Fournette was cut a year ago and he was underwhelming in the regular season with the Bucs. He isn’t worth a big contract especially to the Bucs. Comeback for $2-3 million a year or good luck amigo.

It looks like Fournette is a bit disillusioned. Call his bluff, let him go to a mediocre team.

Thats fine. Focus on getting ab back in the fold and we can still find a rb who can catch and block. They don’t necessarily grow on trees but they are probably the easiest to find out of all of our free agents and what they have to offer.

Yeah let Fournette go. He’s overrated. I would only give him $2 mil max. Plus we have a better running back already on the roster. Wish we could have signed White.

And @JC5100 I agree. Bring Connor in to be the third down back. There’s also Bell, Johnson, Coleman, and Burkhead still out there too.

I would think a deal has to be close. Dont think James White would have re-signed with the Patriots without Tampa consideration.

Given Brady’s input on offensive side, be very surprised if Fournette was not back with us.

Also very surprised about the lack of appreciation for him. Dude dominated in the playoffs and that isn’t easily replaceable through the draft or with RoJo (catching/blocking)

we need Lenny back and he should be the starter.

Very surprising we didn’t just offer 3mil to White who is a perfect fit. If this means we draft a RB at pick 32 I hate it. We need to draft an edge and there’s a fair few good edges in this class IMO. At least one worthy of the pick will be there.

Please no RB in the first round. Skeptical of one at pick 64 too.

Edge is a need? Now if we’re using a first rounder on a backup then edge rusher is up there, but it is in no way a need. This is win now mode, first pick needs to be as big a contributor as possible, and RB does fit that bill as much as I don’t like it either. That might be why we’re in wait mode on fournette, why sign him now if we draft a better one in a month?

Again, you can’t sign anyone without first clearing the cap space. Resigning Smith cleared enough room for Suh’s $10 mil, but probably not much more than that. Do the Bucs really want to extend Jensen before the draft? Who knows if maybe they have their eye on a center in the draft. If that’s the case they are kind of stuck with his current deal. What do they want to do with Brate? Does Brate want to take a paycut when he can probably get a decent deal on the open market? Stuff like that needs to be worked out pretty quickly so they can do whatever else they want to do with free agents.

clear some room for ab on a one year deal that voids if he gets into trouble. and a low salary for lenny if he wants to come back.

He didn’t dominate in the playoffs though. He had over 5 drops, was an average at best blocker, and averaged 4.5 ypc. He had a few good runs but let’s not exaggerate things.

RoJo is the much better runner and we can get a better 3rd down back for cheaper than what Fournette will cost.

I think Fournette and AB will sit tight until we sign Godwin long term to get his cap number down. Brate needs to take a paycut, flat out.. at the very minimum restructure his deal to bring his cap hit down.

I’m basically against a RB at #32 but would you take Alvin Kamara if he was there at #32? Etienne has been compared to AK and looks the part. He probably won’t be there, but I think he would be tempting. But edge rusher is definitely a need. We may be in win now mode now but we’re going to be in win now mode next year too and JPP could benefit from taking some snaps off. You need a 3 or 4 man rotation and last season all we had was Anthony Nelson.

Yeah edge rusher is a must. We have no depth behind JPP and Shaq. And JPP isn’t getting younger.

What’s the rush? If a pretty good vet will take a cheap deal, go for it! Whether or not that happens, there are quite a few RBs in the draft that can potentially provide exactly what we’re missing in that RB room.

Dominate? Ok but he certainly was a pivotal piece in the playoffs.

Super Bowl – Had a 27 yard touchdown run in the third quarter when the game was 21-9. Averaged 5.6 yards per carry and 135 total yards.

NFC Champ game – had a 20 yard touchdown run in second quarter when game was tied at 7-7 where Greenbay just took momentum on a 50 yard touchdown pass. Might have only been one play but man was that a physical run and took back the momentum

Saints game – receiving touchdown late in the 3rd to tie the game up at 20-20. over 100 yards from scrimmage

Redskins game – scored a touchdown in the 4th quarter with the score 21-16. 130 total yards.

not saying the guy is worth 8 Mil a year but for what he did in the playoffs alone, need to bring him back and i think 4 mil is a good value.

I guess i just dont see how special RoJo is. I think he’s a good compliment but feel most teams need 2 backs these days unless you have yourself a top 5 back.

Sure he was a piece but lots of running backs could give us the prediction that he provides. Going off of this season and playoffs RoJo was definitely the better runner. More ypc, top 6 in yards after contact, and number 1 in yards after contact per rush. Fournette is not in the top 30. Both backs dropped their fare share of balls and both are poor blockers. RoJo’s drop percentage for this year was 11.9% vs Fournette at 14.9%. Fournette overall has better hands than RoJo’s but, in my opinion, his hands aren’t that good. Off the top of my head I remember 5 dropped balls from Fournette in the playoffs alone.

Some like PFF and some don’t so take the following as you may. Looking at their grades for the regular season:
      RoJo:
      Overall: 74.6
      Run grade – 84.7
      Receiving – 29.6
      Pass block – 46.8

      Fournette:
      Overall: 65.5
      Run grade – 70.9
      Receiving – 58.8
      Pass block – 28.4

Hey if he comes cheap then sure but I’d look elsewhere at $4 mil.

Was really hoping for James White. A Tom Brady favorite, and one of the best receiving backs in the NFL. The guy had FOURTEEN catches in the Super Bowl against the Falcons!

My guess is Bucs gave Playoff Lenny an offer and told him it isn’t up for negotiation. So take it to the market and if he can get a better deal, then thanks for what you did for us and good luck in your future. Otherwise, here’s the deal and your locker is still here. Would love to see Etienne though!
