Winston in command of the huddle  leader_zpselgjqpdk.pngIn addition to learning the offense, rookie Jameis Winston is establishing himself as the leader inside the huddle. ANDY JONES/STAFF    Published: August 9, 2015   TAMPA — Their offense scheme isn’t the only thing the Buccaneers are hoping rookie QB Jameis Winston can develop a command of during training camp. This is also the time when Winston has to establish himself as the leader in and develop a command of the huddle.Coordinator Dirk Koetter has gone so far as to encourage Winston to tell chatty C Evan Smith to shut up if necessary, but what he really wants is for Winston to master the skill of taking a play from the coach, calling it properly and executing under center.Like just about every other aspect of the job, Winston appears to be making good strides in that endea- vor. So say a couple of the players who have regularly been inside that huddle with him.“He’s awesome in the huddle,’’ rookie RG Ali Marpet said. “He’s such a competitive guy and such a positive guy. Always. Even when I’m dying out there sweating and breathing heavily, he’s like, ‘Come on, come on, get up.’ ”It’s not just his fellow rookies who are impressed with Winston’s ability to control the huddle and communicate the plays. Ten-year veteran LG Logan Mankins says he too has been impressed by Winston’s presence in the huddle.“He’s great,’’ Mankins said. “He gets a little too excited sometimes and talks a little too fast. But other than that, he’s been great. He’s been everything we could ask for. He’s having his bumps and bruises but he’s learning and trying to correct those mistakes.Take that ball awayAfter finishing in a seven-way tie for 13th with 25 takeaways last year, the Bucs are looking to take a big leap this year in the interception and fumble recovery department. One defender who believes they’ll be able to accomplish that is WLB Lavonte David, who says the comfort level the Bucs have with coach Lovie Smith’s scheme should result in more big plays.“Last year, guys were just trying to learn their job and do what they’re supposed to,’’ David said. “But this year we’re doing our job and more. That’s where the playmaking ability comes in, when guys do a little extra. We’ve been seeing a lot of that.”Muddling throughHeavy rains forced the Bucs to push the start of practice back two-and-a-half hours to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Unlike last Saturday, however, the practice remained at One Buc Place. The Bucs had to cancel the open aspect of their first training camp practice and move it to USF, where they worked under the lights last Saturday.“As I said the other day, you’re going to have games where you’re going to have a storm and you’re going to have to go in and then come back out again,’’ Smith said. “You just have to fight through the adversity, and the guys did that and we had a decent day of practice.’’Take it easyMankins and LDE George Johnson were given the day off Saturday. Mankins was given what Smith referred to as a “vet day,’’ while Johnson was nursing what Smith referred to as “general soreness.’’“(Johnson) should be fine,’’ Smith said. “And Logan, there’s nothing wrong with him. Some of the veterans, they get a vet day from time to time. Throughout (camp), some of the guys will get vet days off.’’ Roy Cummings
