Tampa Bay wide receiver Joey Galloway has been ruled out of Sunday's contest with Chicago due to a foot injury. Bucs cornerback Elbert Mack lost the appeal of his one-game suspension for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan on Friday.
Mack will be out for this Sunday's game at Chicago. In order to fill the roster spot the Bucs elevated cornerback Marcus Hamilton from the practice squad. Cornerback Brandon Sumrall was re-signed to the practice squad. He had been on the practice squad for the first two weeks of the season before being released on Sep. 17.
"We did have a roster change. We promoted cornerback Marcus Hamilton to the active roster," said Bucs head coach Jon Gruden.
Gruden did not know whether Mack lost the appeal of his suspension, and said that maybe Bucs general manager Bruce Allen had heard back from the NFL league office. Allen did confirm to the media that Mack lost his appeal, and will be suspended for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.
"We got to get another man up and ready to play," said Gruden. "If you remember Marcus had a good training camp. He'll play if needed.
"He knows the defense, and he's a good player. He was in it right to the very end and lost a tough battle for the 53-man roster but he's active."
Hamilton was a 2007 seventh-round draft pick out of the University of Virginia. He spent the majority of last season on the practice squad. Gruden went on to update the status of some of the other injured Buccaneers.
"Let's say that [wide receiver Joey Galloway] is a game-time decision. I'll make that announcement on game day," said Gruden after practice. "Again we'll hold out what hope we have.
"[LB Derrick Brooks] practiced today. Aqib Talib did practice, and so did Gaines [Adams]. Again we'll get to the stadium and see how the guys feel as we always do, and go from there."
When the officlal injury report was released a few hours later, Galloway was ruled out for the contest. Joining him on the injury report were Brooks (hamstring), Talib (hamstring), and Adams (ribs) all listed as questionable. Guard Davin Joseph was also ruled out with his foot injury.
The Chicago Bears had safety Brandon McGowan and tackle Chris Williams ruled out with an ankle and back injury respectively. McGowan was placed on injured reserve. The Bears had rookie safety Craig Steltz listed as doubtful with an ankle injury. Return specialist Devin Hester was listed as questionable with a rib injury, and defensive tackle Tommie Harris was listed as probable with a knee injury.
