Tampa Bay quarterback Jeff Garcia did not report with his teammates to Celebration Hotel for the start of training camp on Friday.
Garcia has been excused by the Bucs for the first two days of training camp (July 26 and 27) so he can attend his father's 35th-year anniversary reunion for his junior college championship in California.
Most of the buzz coming out of Celebration Hotel on Friday focused on an absent quarterback, but it wasn't Garcia. Instead, the conversation and questions focused on retired Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre.
Multiple reports surfaced Friday that the Green Bay Packers had given permission to the Buccaneers and the New York Jets to speak to Favre, who is expected to submit a letter to the NFL asking to be reinstated to the league as early as today. Favre plans to report to Packers training camp this weekend.
How does Garcia feel about the reports that suggest the Buccaneers are interested in trading for Favre? As of right now, not much, but that could change when he takes the practice field on Monday.
"I really don't have anything to say about that stuff," Garcia said in a text message to PewterReport.com. "I'll be there on Monday to answer questions."
Garcia, 38, completed 63.9 percent of his passes for 2,440 yards and tossed 13 touchdowns and four interceptions in his Buccaneer debut in 2007. That performance helped Tampa Bay win the NFC South division title and earned Garcia a trip to the Pro Bowl as an alternate.
The Bucs and the agent for Garcia have been attempting to negotiate a new contract for Garcia, who has one year remaining on his deal, but to no avail.
