Each week PewterReport.com's Mark Cook sits down with a Bucs player and
asks them a series of questions about growing up, what they like to do
in their spare time and several other questions that have nothing to do
with the X's and O's of football. This week's featured player is Bucs
defensive end Steven Means.
PewterReport.com is debuting a new weekly feature that will run every Saturday during the regular season called Off The Field. The feature will be a casual Q&A with a Buccaneer player allowing the readers a look at what makes them tick and how they spend their time when not in uniform.
Bucs rookie defensive end Steven Means can usually be spotted all the way across the locker room by his wide nearly ever-present smile. Means, who was born, raised and played his college football in Buffalo, New York, always seems to be happy – until the helmets goes on and he steps on the white-striped turf. The mild-mannered, happy-go-lucky personality is transformed and the attitude and always running motor was something that attracted the Bucs to Means.
Means sat down with PewterReport.com’s Mark Cook recently and answered a few questions. And yes the smile was there throughout the interview.Born, raised, high school, college, are you allergic to anywhere other than Buffalo?
“I have left a couple of times, but for the majority of my whole life I have been in Buffalo. I just left for a couple of AAU basketball games or something like that.”What is it about Buffalo that you love so much and of course you had to have been a Bills fan, right?
“I used to be, I used to a be a Bills fans, but it is just a lot of fun in Buffalo. You have to find fun, you have to make fun. But it is a small community so we are all tight. A lot of people know everybody in Buffalo. So it’s just all love there.”Besides football what other sports did you play in your high school days?
“Yeah I played basketball, ran track swimming in high school. I lettered in four sports in high school.”While some fans would argue, you can’t spend every waking minute thinking and studying football. So what do you do in your down time?
“I like to call my family and see hoe they are doing. Talk to my little cousins. I am with them all the time. Talk to them about their sports. But I like to play the game a lot too. I play a lot of 2K, a lot of Call of Duty stuff like that. I’m a PS3 guy.”Is there a special person in your life, do you care to share, or are you a confirmed bachelor?
(Laughing) No, I have someone who has been by my side a long time. We are riding strong.”What’s on your playlist these days?
“You are going to find a lot of Lil’ Wayne, Meek Mill, stuff like that. You will find some hip-hop, some old school stuff. A lot of new school though.”Everyone has at least one song they wouldn’t want their buddies to find on their iPod. What is yours?
“Oh man, wow… Do I have to say? Probably Dive by Usher, or Heart Attack by Trey Songz.”A lot of players have go-to songs to get them pumped up before a game, do you?
“No I don’t really don’t listen to music right before a game. I am thinking about the game and stuff. I listen to music on the way to the stadium. Maybe some Lil’ Wayne just on the way to the stadium.”Besides the usual hazing that happens, what is the most difficult part of being a rookie in the NFL?
“Not really knowing exactly what is going to happen. Short-term future. Long-term future. Just waking up everyday with a new day. The uncertainty of being a rookie.”So you have the power to have dinner with any three people in history, dead or alive, who is Steven Means having sitting at his dinner table?
“I would definitely have Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. there. Of course I would have Jesus Christ there and I would probably bring Ray Lewis or Brian Dawkins.”If you knew your time was up and you had the opportunity for one last meal, what are you sitting down and eating before you check out?
“Shrimp alfredo, shrimp alfredo or cereal. (Laughing) I love cereal! I eat cereal in the morning. When I come from practice before I go to bed, if I wake up in the middle of the night. I can eat cereal all day. I’m a Frosted Flakes, Golden Grahams kind of guy.”You mentioned before being drafted you had rarely left Buffalo, New York, so what is your favorite vacation destination or a place you want to travel to that might be on your bucket list?
“I haven’t planned a vacation yet, but probably to go to the Mother Land. Africa. To see the beauty in Africa.”
