• Speaking of big, Buccaneers guard Carl Nicks appears set to play in Sunday’s game with the New England Patriots. According to Schiano, Nicks will play barring any setbacks between now and then.
“He went all three days – limited – but he did go," Schiano said. "So, that’s the best we’ve been in a long time. If he’s like he is now, I suspect he’ll play, but we just have to wait and see how everything responds each day.
Schiano said there isn’t a specific number of plays set for Nicks, if he is able to go on Sunday.
“Let’s just get him to game time, then we’ll see. If he can play, then how long? That’ll be up for grabs. I don’t even know if he can yet.”
Nicks spoke with the media during Friday’s open locker room period and also was encouraged and excited about getting back in real game action for the first time since last October.
“It feels really good to get back to work and feel like I’m contributing to the team and not feeling useless and sickly,” Nicks said. “It’s a really good feeling. I’m hiding it well, but I’m very excited.”
Nicks wasn’t sure if he ends up playing how his conditioning will be.
“We’re going to find out [laughs]," Nicks said. "That’s the plan, but we’re going to find out. You guys will see, sooner than I will, if I’m gassed out there.”
• Wide receiver Vincent Jackson has chosen not to speak to the media the last few weeks including after the Bucs first two games of the season. On Friday Jackson broke his silence and talked about the Bucs offense being their own worst enemy.
“The biggest thing is penalties, setting yourself back,” Jackson said. “It’s hard to get drives going when you’re going backwards and not forward. As long as we’re taking care of the football, we’re eliminating mental errors and we’re not going backwards in penalties, I think this offense could do just fine.”
Jackson also addresses the rumors floating in the media over the last two weeks.
“There is no disarray in this building,” Jackson said. “We know what we have to do; we know the team that we are. We just, again, haven’t closed off two games, but then again there’s a lot of football left so we’re excited about that.”BUCS QUOTE OF THE DAY
“We have good players, proven methods, good schemes, good coaches. When you have all those good components and you’re doing things the right way it’ll turn. Everybody that’s been in competitive athletics goes through some stretches where they wish it was better. If you have the components-now you’re kidding yourself if you don’t have the component, then you’re just wishing. I know we have the components so we’ve just got to stick our guns and it’ll turn.”– Schiano on why he is confident the Bucs can turn around their dismal startUP NEXT FOR TAMPA BAY
The Buccaneers travel to New England on Saturday for their second road game of the season against the Patriots. Early weather forecasts are calling for a high of 70 degrees and showers. The came begins at 1 p.m. and will be carried locally by WTVT-FOX 13.
