Lovie Smith is putting the final touches on his coaching roster as the Buccaneers announced the addition of two more to his staff with the hiring of former Colorado head coach Jon Embree as their new tight ends coach and Dave Borgonzi as a defensive quality control coach.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced on Thursday that they have hired Jon Embree as tight ends coach and added Dave Borgonzi as defensive quality control coach.
Embree, a 22-year coaching veteran, comes to the Buccaneers after one season as the tight ends coach for Cleveland (2013), during which Browns tight end Jordan Cameron earned a Pro Bowl berth and ranked second in the NFL in receiving yards by a tight end (917).
Prior to joining the Browns, Embree was the head coach at the University of Colorado for two seasons (2011-12). Embree has spent a total of 17 years at Colorado as a player (1983-86) and coach (1991; 1993-2002). Following his playing career with Colorado, Embree was selected in the sixth-round of the 1987 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He played two seasons (1987-88) for the team before retiring.
After getting his start in coaching with the Buffaloes, Embree spent three seasons as an assistant head coach at UCLA, working with wide receivers (2003) and tight ends (2004-05). Embree got his start in the NFL as a tight ends coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, a position he held for three seasons (2006-08), before joining the Washington Redskins for one season (2010).
Borgonzi joins Tampa Bay following three seasons (2011-13) serving as offensive assistant for the Dallas Cowboys, where his primary duties included assisting in weekly breakdowns and scouting reports of each opponent while also working with the scout team during daily practices.
Borgonzi spent five seasons coaching collegiately prior to his time with Dallas, working at Harvard University (2008-10) and Syracuse (2006-07). He was a three-year starter and senior-year captain at Amherst College, where he played linebacker.
Smith now had an announced staff of 16 assistant coaches.
