Tampa Bay head coach Jon Gruden has had an opportunity to speak with Cato June regarding the linebacker's recent legal trouble and announced Wednesday that June will start vs. the Washington Redskins on Sunday.
"I've talked to him and I've also spent countless hours thinking about it," Gruden said of June. "I do know this – he's a great guy. We're going to stand behind him. I think he's going to learn from this. I'll let his comments speak for him."
June, who turned 28 on Sunday, was arrested in Tampa on Monday morning in Tampa and charged with driving under the influence.
The 6-foot, 227-pound June was pulled over between Osborne Avenue and North Dale Mabry Highway at 2:52 a.m. several hours after Tampa Bay had returned from Atlanta after defeating the Falcons, 31-7.
According to the Tampa Tribune, a Tampa police officer's radar clocked June's 2005 blue Cadillac sports utility vehicle at 66 miles per hour in a 45 mpg zone. The officer pulled June over and detected the smell of alcohol on his breath. The officer also claimed that June had bloodshot and glassy eyes.
"Field sobriety exercises were conducted," the affidavit said, according to the Tampa Tribune. "The defendant exhibited clues of impairment."
According to the police report, June refused to take a blood alcohol concentration test and was booked at the Orient Road Jail at 4:16 a..m. He remained in jail until he posted $500 bail on the misdemeanor charge at 11:30 a.m. on Monday.
June was not available for comment on Wednesday.
The former Indianapolis Colt signed a three-year contract with the Bucs during the offseason after spending four years with the Colts, He currently ranks third on the Tampa Bay defense, which ranks No. 5 overall in the NFL, with 90 tackles.
