Just Grillin sponsors PewterReport.com’s Pewter Player of the Week, which is given to Tampa Bay’s MVP as selected by the PewterReport.com staff every Tuesday following the most recent game.
Tampa Bay had a lot riding on the line on Sunday when New Orleans came to town, but the Saints pulled an upset, 24-17, and denied the Buccaneers a chance to get above .500. As a result, the Bucs fell to 6-7 on the season – in large part due to the inefficient play of Tampa Bay’s offense outside of running back Doug Martin, who rushed for a team-high 81 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries (7.4 avg.).
For his efforts, Martin is this week’s Just Grillin Pewter Player of the Week.
Martin’s 14-yard touchdown run, which was his fifth of the year, got the Bucs on the board and cut into the Saints’ 14-0 lead in the second quarter. Tampa Bay’s first-round pick in 2012 capped off the day with 24-yard jaunt in the fourth quarter that pushed his average over seven yards per carry for the third time this season.
On Tuesday, Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said he would have liked to have given Martin more carries, but the score and time remaining in Sunday’s game dictated that Tampa Bay pass the ball more, especially in the second half. The Bucs were a woeful 36 percent (4-of-11) on third downs against the Saints, and that limited the team’s plays to 52 while New Orleans had 78 plays because of its 71 percent (12-of-17) third down conversion rate.
Martin has rushed for 1,214 yards and five touchdowns this season, and he is the NFL’s second-leading rusher. He trails Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson (1,251 yards) by only 35 yards. Martin is only 241 yards away from breaking his personal best of 1,454 yards rushing his rookie season in 2012.
Because he’s this week’s Just Grillin Pewter Player of the Week, Martin will receive a certificate $50 gift certificate to Just Grillin in Carrollwood.
