After showing tremendous resilience in the fourth quarter, coming back from two devastating touchdowns by LA – a 77-yard fumble return and a 43-yard pass over the top – Tampa Bay lost a 37-32 heartbreaker on the final play in its home opener Sunday.
Save for two costly turnovers, the Bucs offense turned in an impressive outing against the stout front seven of the Rams. With 405 yards through the air and two receivers with over 100 each, the passing game was firing on all cylinders through a good portion of Sunday’s game. It says a lot about a team’s effectiveness throwing the ball when the two receivers who hit the century mark aren’t even the Pewter Player of the Week.
That award goes to Cameron Brate. The tight end caught two touchdowns against the Rams, putting his chemistry with Jameis Winston and knack for getting open in the red zone on full display. Brate, now the lone true pass-catcher at the position following the release of Austin Seferian-Jenkins, finished with six receptions for 69 yards and two critical scores.
Brate also had a 20-yard reception on third-and-14, which set up his first touchdown in the second quarter to put the Bucs up 20-10. On a day in which the tight end position appeared to be in disarray – Luke Stocker out with an injury and Seferian-Jenkins released after a DUI charge – Brate stepped up for Tampa Bay and provided the red zone threat the team needed.
By winning Pewter Report’s Just Grillin Player of the Week, Brate will receiver a $50 gift certificate to Just Grillin in Carrollwood.
