Gerald McCoy was seen leaving Sunday’s game in a walking boot, but the Bucs defensive tackle downplayed the severity of the injury, joking to the Times’ Tom Bassinger that the boot was “stylish” and matched his clothing.

On Monday, Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter similarly didn’t seem too concerned, though noted that McCoy will have a few tests done on his ankle before the medical staff provides an update.

“It’s pretty common for guys who have a foot or an ankle injury to put it in a boot, so that it takes the stress off, takes the body weight off,” Koetter said. “I know Gerald is getting some tests done today and we’ll know more by tomorrow or Wednesday.”

McCoy finished with one and half sacks in the 14-5 win over the Seahawks, including one on third down during the final possession to keep the clock moving.

Since missing the final three games of his rookie year in 2010 and last 10 games in 2011 with torn biceps, McCoy has missed just four games from 2012-2015. His most recent injury was a calf that sidelined him for Week 5 this year, a 17-14 win in Carolina.

As one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL, losing McCoy for any amount of time would be tough for Tampa Bay’s improving defense. The team would presumably rely on the likes of Clinton McDonald, Akeem Spence and recent signees John Hughes and Sealver Siliga to help fill the void. Moving William Gholston inside is another possibility.

Of course the Bucs are hoping the injury is as insignificant as McCoy and Koetter’s comments seem to suggest, and that the All-Pro three-technique will be ready to go in San Diego next week.
