The Buccaneers need all the help they can get on the offensive line and got a bit of good news on Thursday, as six-time Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins returned to practice three days after suffering a knee injury in Sunday’s 20-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers in their home opener.
When the injury first occurred in the second quarter last Sunday, many feared it was serious and could cause Mankins to miss considerable time, thus weakening an already struggling unit. Mankins has not been available to the media this week but was dressed and out working with the first-team offense during the brief media-viewing period on Thursday.
The Buccaneers offense struggled through the first three quarters on Sunday and failed to produce any points until late in the game. Much of that was due to inconsistent line play and no running game to speak of, in addition to two poorly thrown balls from quarterback Josh McCown that were intercepted by the Panthers.
Tampa Bay received some additional good news when running back Doug Martin, who also suffered a knee injury on Sunday against Carolina, was seen practicing with his teammates on Thursday.
Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins (ankle) did not participate on Thursday, along with defensive end Michael Johnson (ankle) and cornerback Rashaan Melvin.
