PEWTERREPORT.COM CHAT TRANSCRIPT – 12/11/07
pewterreportjf: Hello, Bucs fans. Let the PewterReport.com chat session begin. rohan: Will Micheal Bennett finally get a shot at playing the guy is averaging 6.3 yard per carry! bucboy: clinch it and then be careful with jeff, ike, joey, etc pewterreportsr: Wow. Is this karma or what? Now Rich McKay knows what it feels like to abandon ship. Without Tim Ruskell, McKay has been exposed in Atlanta. He's had two bad hires in Atlanta now with Jim Mora, who was fired, and Bobby Petrino, who quit. Maybe McKay will finally have to be held accountable for his mistakes. If I'm Arthur Blank, do I want McKay in charge of the next coaching search? guest: Absolutely not, SR, I think he's gone jollyroger25: Any word on a possible Gruden extension? I'm assuming not, but I thought I heard it mentioned on Bruce Allen's pregame interview (radio) pewterreportjf: rohan – I think Jon Gruden will use Michael Bennett more down the stretch. Gruden wants to see more consistency from Bennett in practice. He needs to do a better job of catching the ball and picking up blitzes. bucboy: i'm not talking bad about atlanta until hopefully sunday at 3:05 canadianbuc: JF/SR – with the emergence of young talent such as Greg White, Jovan Haye, Gaines Adams and Ryan Simms…Do you see the Bucs not making it a priority to address the defence line via the draft?, instead focusing on WR, QB, CB – on day one? pewterreportjf: jollyroger25 – I don't think Jon Gruden or Bruce Allen will receive contract extensions until after the 2007 season is over. I do, however, believe they will receive extensions. rohan: Ike Hilliard is a neck injury? bucs449: how will the bucs do in the playoffs? guest: in case I don't get to say it later, hope you all have a merry christmas. might be down for the panthers game rdhess: Greg White has been unblockable! bucboy: greg white is manly! guest: btw, this guest is revfish. don't know why it's saying guest guest: Well, you gotta think the players will be self-motivated to put up a good showing since their coach quit on them – Quite a reversal from players that normally quit on their coach pewterreportsr: rohan – I know the media is latching on to the "BENNETT MUST PLAY!" business, but in reality there is a reason Gruden doesn't trust him. He can't afford to have Bennett in on pass protection because he hasn't shown terribly well as a blocker and a receiver. It's easy to say "Well just have Bennett run the ball." But what if the QB sees a run blitz and has to audible to a pass? Then Bennett will be counted on to run a route or pass protect – that's not his forte`. pewterreportjf: canadianbuc – No, I still see the Bucs making the defensive line a priority. While Jovan Haye is playing better at under tackle, they wouldn't be opposed to upgrading the position. Plus, defensive ends Greg Spires and Kevin Carter aren't getting any younger. If he hits free agency, I'd love to see the Bucs sign DE Jared Allen. rohan: Hey Guys Earnest Graham had 9 TD's what is the record? jollyroger25: Why do the Bucs have trouble beating back-up qbs? pewterreportsr: I agree with Jim, I'd love to see Jared Allen in Tampa Bay. I think K.C. franchises him, though. pewterreportjf: bucs449 – I see the Buccaneers winning the NFC South division title this Sunday vs. Atlanta. I also see them winning their home playoff game against the New York Giants. After that, I can't say I'm too confident that the Bucs will beat Dallas or Green Bay. rdhess: I think Spires will be released next year guest: hope we play the giants…the irony is that currently I want to be #4 vs. Giants rather than the vikes pewterreportjf: rohan – That's a good question. I know Mike Alstott rushed for 10 touchdowns in a single season, but I'm not sure if that was a record. pewterreportsr: jollyroger25 – It wasn't just Sage Rosenfels, it was the fact that the Texans short-gamed the Bucs with a lot of underneath passing stuff. Peyton Manning did the same thing. I'm surprised more teams don't try to do it. The Bucs have a hard time stopping it. guest: SR, Isn't that what the Bucs are really trying to force with their defense — make offenses go the distance and hope they screw up pewterreportjf: jollyroger – Sage Rosenfels deserves credit. He played very well vs. the Bucs. It's no different than how Luke McCown played vs. the Saints. Sometimes playing a team's backup quarterback is not an ideal scenario since that player is looking to prove something. I wouldn't read into it too much. The Texans played one of the better games of the year, and unfortunately it came vs. the Bucs. rohan: JF/SR there is a rumour that if Bennet plays a certain amount the bucs have to give up a higher draft pick to KC any truth to that at all ? guest: sr- was the stevens move unexpected at this point in the season, and am I current in thinking it won't affect us too much on the field? jollyroger25: Yeah, it's just the same thing happened against the Jags – I even remember the Jets beating us with Vinny (who we thought was on his last leg – then) pewterreportsr: James Wilder had 13 rushing TDs in 1984. Errict Rhett had 11 in 1995. pewterreportjf: rohan – That's possible. We do not have the details of the Bennett trade, but it's possible that the conditions of the draft picks that are supposed to go to Kansas City are contigent on Bennett's playing time/production. rdhess: JF/SR – how bad is Ike's injury? Will this be Clayton's last chance to step up? canadianbuc: SR/JR – What Draft picks do we have in the upcoming draft, assuming Plummer does not Report? guest: Hope Atlanta's thrid, fourth or fifth string QB doesn't follow the Texans and Jags backups success against us bucboy: buc d really only agve up 14. the kick return and the very short field on the fumbled snap pewterreportsr: rohan – I seriously doubt the Bucs are holding Bennett back from carries over a draft pick. pewterreportjf: guest – I am not surprised by the NFL's decision to suspend Jerramy Stevens. I actually think it's a good time for him to get suspended as the Bucs shouldn't need him to beat Atlanta on Sunday. guest: supposedly there's also a rule prohibiting teams from withholding play time (Beennet) to avoid incentives and draft picks jollyroger25: How bad is Ike? pewterreportsr: We haven't heard any specifics on Hilliard's injury other than it is a neck/back injury. I seriously doubt he plays this Sunday. Clayton and Stovall have to step up. pewterreportjf: guest – The bottom line is Bennett has to do a better job on the practice field. He hasn't been consistent enough for Jon Gruden's liking. jollyroger25: Didn't he have a serious neck injury in NY? bucboy: no ike and garcia's first game in a month. let's not create any bad karma for sunday canadianbuc: SR/JR – if you guys had to guess at this point, do you feel Monte Kiffen will be back next year? pewterreportsr: Again, the problem with Bennett is that Graham has played stellar football, Bennett does not know the entire playbook and he's lacking in the passing game (he's had two drops and he's not as solid as Graham is in pass protection). pewterreportsr: canadianbuc – I think Kiffin will be back next year. I don't see any "natural fits" for him in the college or pro ranks. I think he signs on for 1 or 2 more years and then Raheem takes over. guest: sr- agreed. don't fix something that's not broken with Graham …though I'm hoping PIttman will come back soon jollyroger25: For a second I thought Spurlock was gonna break the streak… pewterreportjf: canadianbuc – Monte Kiffin should be back in 2008, but there will come a point in time in the near future where the Bucs have to think of life without Kiffin. My guess is they will try to sign Kiffin to a deal that expires at the same time as Raheem Morris' deal. That way, they can promote Morris to defensive coordiantor and not lose him. pewterreportsr: guest – Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see Bennett get more opportunities, but Gruden trusts Graham a lot. Bennett – in the words of Borat – not so much! bucboy: spurlock's was a good one, but yet another case of not enough speed to get it to the hizzy. rohan: JF/SR any chance that next year we sign a marquee WR pewterreportjf: rohan – If the Bucs pursue a wide receiver in free agency, I think they will consider signing Raiders WR Jerry Porter, who is scheduled to become a free agent in 2008. pewterreportsr: jollyroger25 – The kicker Kris Brown did a great job of filling the gap on the kick return, forcing Spurlock to bounce it outside where a Texans defender pursued him and forced him out of bounds. bucboy: bucs need a burner to return KO's jollyroger25: What young players do you seen being rewarded with extensions – either now or in the offseason. I assume Graham, but what about White or Haye? pewterreportsr: rohan – I like what Patrick Crayton is doing in Dallas. Sam Hurd, whom I liked out of Northern Illinois, is playing very well as the No. 3, which may prompt Dallas not to offer Crayton the world. Hurd could become a No. 2. Crayton could be a No. 2 in Tampa Bay and a kick returner. cadillac 24: How was your trip to Houston JF? pewterreportjf: jollyroger25 – I think Earnest Graham, Greg White and Jovan Haye are a few of the players that could receive new contracts soon. pewterreportjf: cadillac24 – The trip to Houston was short, but nice. Reliant Stadium is awesome. I highly recommend a trip to an away Bucs game with Buc Fan Tours. They do a great job. canadianbuc: How nice would Desean Jackson be? guest: jf/sr- preciated the article talking about the extra money graham gets for playing even if it's not in the contrack pewterreportsr: jollyroger25 – I'll address that in this week's SR's Fab Five, but Graham, White, Haye are among the players the Bucs could sign extensions to. buc101: is there any chance of Tampa obtaining Brett Favre? lol bucboy: sure seemed like the intesnity just wasn't there on sunday cadillac 24: Is UT a targeted position for the Bucs next year or are they confident with Haye? guest: Is n't D. Jackson a little light pewterreportsr: canadianbuc – I've heard from more than one agent that Desean Jackson is in love with himself and is a bit of an ass. jollyroger25: it would be nice to reward the young players that are "maturing" – rather than spending tons to bring F/A's in. cadillac 24: Also, how likely is it that Albert Haynesworth becomes available in the offseason? spiderman1314: I'd like to see a good mix of both- building on what we have and bringing in some new talent. pewterreportjf: cadillac24 – If the Titans want to re-sign Albert Haynesworth they should be able to do it. They have a ton of cap room in 2008. guest: Doubt the Titans let him walk canadianbuc: lol interesting….perhaps he will fall in the draft – he would sure solve both our punt and return problems pewterreportsr: cadillac24 – I think Tampa Bay will look at DTs in the draft, but this class appears to be light. Haye is playing well and I think Ryan Sims will really step it up next year with a full offseason in Tampa Bay. He's just learning the defense and getting comfortable in it. buc101: SR/JF is there still any talk of Kiffin heading to Nebraska? pewterreportjf: No, Monte Kiffin is not heading to Nebraska from what we understand. buc101: well that's good news cadillac 24: Are the Bucs interested in Terrell Suggs as a DE? Would he fit out system as a DE or is he more suited playing at LB in a 3-4 defense? buc101: especially after Saban bailing out, and now Petrino rdhess: SR/JF it looks like the Bucs will face the Giants in the playoffs. How do you feel the Bucs match up? bucboy: nyg are 6-1 on the road guest: good question jollyroger25: what will it take for the Bucs to get a bye before playoffs – I get confused pewterreportsr: cadillac24 – I think Terrell Suggs is a stud. He was a natural 4-3 DE at Arizona State. Having him along with Gaines Adams and Greg White, who can also play DT in the nickel rush, would be an outstanding mix of pass rushers. guest: Seems to me our D matches up pretty well against the Gints pewterreportjf: cadillac24 – Suggs could be a player the Bucs express interest in during the offseason. He's a talented player no matter what system he's in. antcam: Bring on the the Cowgirls!!!!!!!! guest: giants may be 6-1 but they are a weaker 6-1 right now than how they were playing earlier in the year bucboy: why can't the bucs stop 3rd down? guest: At some point it would be nice for PR to have a list comparing the 2008 cap rooms of all the NFL teams pewterreportsr: rdhess – I'd rather play the Giants than the Vikings if I'm Tampa Bay. Plus, I would rather play Dallas in Dallas in round 2 than have to travel to frigid Green Bay to play the Packers AND the elements. cadillac 24: Will the Bucs rest their starters in one of the final games of the season? pewterreportjf: jollyroger – the Bucs would need Green Bay to lose its final three games and the Bucs would have to win their final three games for the Bucs to get a bye. It's not going to happen. pewterreportsr: guest – SI.com has one. We focus on the Bucs and not so much on the NFL. bucboy: plus seattle lose 2 of 3 antcam: SR/JF What's the latest word on the progression of G. Peterson? pewterreportjf: bucboy – Yes, I believe that's correct. Like I said, don't count on the Bucs getting the bye week. guest: sr/jf: on the assumption that the Glaziers want Gruden to stay on and sign him to an extenstion, is Gruden happy coaching here and do you feel he'd want to stay? bucboy: i fear the dallas matchup, rather have gb 2nd antcam: Dallas not going to nothing in the playoffs??? pewterreportjf: guest – Yes, I do believe Gruden is happy in Tampa Bay and wants to continue coaching for the Bucs. pewterreportsr: bucboy – If I knew why the Bucs couldn't stop anyone on third down, I'd have Monte Kiffin's job right now. Really, it's simple. The Bucs aren't making plays on third downs. Not enough sacks. Not enough pass rush. Not enough INTs. Not enough tackles. Not enough pass breakups. cadillac 24: Will Keith Heinrich play this Sunday in place of Jerremy Stevens or will they just play with two TEs? guest: thanks…that's just a part of the equation noone ever talks about bucboy: i agree SR, they ahve been horrendous pewterreportjf: antcam – There really isn't anything new to report on Greg Peterson. The Bucs are comfortable with their current rotation along the defensive line, so the second half of the season has been more like a redshirt year for Peterson. rdhess: I don't think the Bucs would match well against Cowboys. We don't have a strong enough pass rush pewterreportjf: cadillac 24 – I think Keith Heinrich will play in place of Jerramy Stevens on Sunday. antcam: at least he got a taste cadillac 24: Will the Bucs rest their starters in one of the final games of the season? buc101: On the NFL Network interview with Tanard Jackson, it looked like T-Jack has a great attitude. Have you guys had the oppurtunity to speak with him at all? pewterreportjf: cadillac 24 – If the Bucs can win the NFC South division title on Sunday, they will have the luxury of resting their starters on Dec. 30 vs. Carolina. pewterreportsr: guest – I agree with Jim. I don't know where Gruden would feel more comfortable than right here in Tampa. He works with his dad and his brother. He has a G.M. in Bruce Allen who has his back. He has loyal assistants in Mark Arteaga and Paul Kelly. He has a promising young nucleus of talent with $30 million under the cap. And he has Kevin Demoff, Doug Williams, Mark Dominik and Dennis Hickey. What more could he want elsewhere? pewterreportjf: Yes, we've had the opportunity to speak with Tanard Jackson. He's a great kid and is turning out to be one heck of a player. bucboy: gruden has referred to "we are building a team" more than once. sure makes me think there has been at least some talk cadillac 24: Will Trotter ever get an opportunity to play if they decide to sit Barrett Ruud one game? guest: bw, y'all…doesn't it make you sick to see the Texans run back a kick off for a TD and we've never done one in 30 years. I'm going to be so happy when we finally put that one to bed pewterreportsr: buc101 – I love T-Jack. He's special. I think this guy could be the next ballhawk in the vein of Ronde Barber. He's just scratching the surface of his game. Very serious kid. buc101: Do you think he could evolve into a Bob Sanders type of player? bucboy: t jack is awesome bucsgirl-dk: Gruden even lived in Tampa for a while when his dad coached the team and was a big Bucs fan. Jon isn't going anywhere unless the local media hacks somehow succeed in running him out of town antcam: What about the progression of Q. Black, A. Hayward, and the rest of the young Bucs? pewterreportsr: guest – What's even worse than Andre Davis taking a KOR all the way back is that it was the 3rd or 4th KOR TD for Houston in their franchise history. Think about that for a second… pewterreportjf: guest – Actually, the Bucs haven't returned a kickoff for a touchdown in 32 seasons, which made the Texans' kickoff return for a TD even worse. It's a ridiculous stat that may never end at this point. I certainly look forward to the day that it does. guest: jf– possibly the swedish bikini team…how's that for a retro commercial? bucboy: andre davis has great speed. what a concept. canadianbuc: Amazing Mag this month guys… buc101: How big of a deal do you think the media will have when Tampa does eventually reuturn one back to the house? cadillac 24: Even with the way our safties are playing, could the Bucs go after Bob Sanders? pewterreportjf: antcam – It's tough for players like Quincy Black and Adam Hayward to make a lot of progress on defense during the regular season since their reps are limited. bucsgirl-dk: guys, do you think there is a chance of any of the older Buccaneers retirring after this season. Alstott probably will but how about Brooks and Barber for example antcam: SR/JF u guys are awesome!!!!!!!!!! pewterreportjf: canadianbuc – Thanks for the kudos on the Pewter Report Cheerleader issue. pewterreportsr: antcam – I think Black and Hayward are developing nicely. The Bucs' plan at LB for any LB they are grooming (see Shelton Quarles, Ryan Nece, etc.) is play hard on special teams and make your mark as a rookie. In year two, get the defense down and make plays in OTAs, camp and the preseason and challenge for playing time. By year 3, you should be a starter. It worked most recently for Barrett Ruud. bucboy: stecker, pittman, clayton, spurlock, etc. none has blazing speed but all have tried the KO's. give bennett a shot spiderman1314: Do the Bucs feel comfortable with Bryant or do you think that could be an area they look to address in terms of getting deeper kickoffs? pewterreportjf: antcam – Thanks, but I don't know about that. We do our best to bring Bucs fans like yourself the news and info you crave and deserve. Hopefully we do a good job in that regard. pewterreportsr: canadianbuc – Thanks for the props on the Cheerleader issue. Jim Flynn took the lead on that issue and deserves the kudos. Gee, I wonder why Flynn shows so much interest in THAT issue?! bucboy: surely bennett knos the kickoff play. haha! buc101: I still haven't received my Cheerleader issue 🙁 antcam: Quit being modest=) pewterreportsr: antcam – Thanks. cadillac 24: Even with the way our safties are playing, could the Bucs go after Bob Sanders? guest: sr/jf: before this closes. Is there something subtle that the Bucs are doing now that they hadn't earlier that we might wish to pay attention to? There may not be, but just curious, whether it be line play,, linebacker shift, use of running backs? cadillac 24: Will Trotter ever get an opportunity to play if they decide to sit Barrett Ruud one game? pewterreportsr: buc101 – Sorry, it's hanging up on my wall. I'll quit gawking, take it down and send it to ya'! buc101: sounds like a deal pewterreportjf: spiderman – The Bucs are comfortable with Matt Bryant. Keep an eye on Bryant in 2009. I believe Mike Nugent's contract with New York is scheduled to expire that year. The Bucs loved Nugent when he came out of college. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Tampa Bay one day. bucsgirl-dk: and yes, great job on the magazine. The cheerleader issue was in my mailbox here in Denmark on Monday. Incredibly fast delivery bucboy: cheerleaders are smokin buc101: maybe you can bring T-Jack and Rachel Watson and drive down here lol buc101: hand delivery buc101: haha rohan: SR/JF Whats the deal with Carnell Williams? Is it time to the Trade in the Caddy? antcam: I know this is irrelevant but what do u think about the Atl coaching situation pewterreportsr: cadillac24 – Trotter may get to play in the season finale if the Bucs want to rest Ruud. Otherwise I don't see Trotter playing a down in Tampa Bay on defense. antcam: I LOVE IT antcam: WAY TO GO MR. MCKAY pewterreportjf: rohan – No way the Bucs could trade Cadillac Williams right now. He's damaged goods. Hopefully he can make a full recovery, but this type of injury suggests it will be tough for him to do. pewterreportjf: We've got to get going, room. buc101: I'll be waiting for my hand delivery Scott guest: Super chat, thanks guys antcam: Who would want Carnell Williams at this point? guest: ce la vi- I guess mine was to involved a questoin. Chow pewterreportsr: antcam – I think karma is at play here. McKay quits on Tampa Bay the week the Bucs played the Falcons. Now Petrino quits on McKay the week the Bucs play the Falcons. McKay should be fired. Two bad hires in five years, a dismal team and not a lot of cap room. bucboy: tell anna and jaime i said hi cadillac 24: Thanks guys! guest: Buc101 – lighten up on that hand stuff rdhess: thanks SR/JF pewterreportjf: Thanks for joining the PewterReport.com chat this evening. Great questions tonight. Take care. rohan: Sr/Jr Carnell Williams or Graham? if both were healthy? antcam: I thought u said he e-mailed yall his resume rohan: one for the road come on pewterreportsr: Thanks for the great questions, and remember that Pewter Report and the Pewter Insider make a GREAT holiday gift.
