PEWTERREPORT.COM CHAT TRANSCRIPT – 5/8/07 pewterreportjf: Hello, Bucs fans. imabucnut: Him Jim, how's it going? dm4bucs: hey jf pewter410yrs: hey jim pewterreportjf: It's going well. Scott Reynolds should be joining us in a little bit. In the meantime, let the PewterReport.com Chat Session begin. pewter410yrs: JR .. What separates a player like Quincy Black, from a Marquise cooper who was drafted in a similar spot, and was viewed as the same type of player? dm4bucs: any new tidbits you can give us out of one buc palace jim? :) pewterreportjf: pewter410yrs – That's a good question. Marquis Cooper looked like a pro linebacker, but he didn't play like it. He lacked instincts and seemed like he was always swimming from a mental standpoint. He also lacked size (213 pounds). Black has great instincts and he's 240 pounds. He can play all three linebacker spots, whereas Cooper couldn't. It's early, but Black was impressive at the rookie mini-camp. pewterreportjf: dm4bucs – There isn't a lot of news coming out of One Buc Place right now. However, that could change as the team will hold OTAs on Wednesday and Thursday this week. imabucnut: I'm just wondering about what Kaufman said about the Glazers "leaning" on the FO on the draft. I don't believe it, just wondering if you'd heard anything about it. strickii: FoxSports reported the same about the Glazers pewterreportjf: imabucnut – The Glazers didn't order the Bucs front office to address the defense. I wrote about this in a Pewter Insider article a few weeks ago. If the Glazers had to do anything of the sort, they would have fired Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen in January. The front office knew it had to address the defense, and it did, or at least it attempted to. imabucnut: Thanks, must have missed that PI, but that's what I felt anyway. :) bluetick: Do you guys have any info on the Center from Miami, that was sign due to his tryout at minicamp? dm4bucs: any word on how peterson looked during the mini camps? brianb: what will it take for Gruden/Allen to keep their jobs past this season? pewterreportjf: bluetick – No new info. We don't know much about him, but the Bucs must have liked him to sign him to their offseason roster. pewter410yrs: JR…How do you think Dan Beunning will make the transition do Center?, and do you feel he will win the starting job? bluetick: Thanks, yeah I figured that much also. Maybe on of the centers will stick… imabucnut: Is the post draft issue finished? Can't wait for it. fbickley: I know you said the bucs were tight lipped about Boston, but have you found out anything else about his condition this year? pewterreportjf: brianb – The Bucs must show significant improvement for Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen to stay in Tampa Bay. What that is I'm not sure. My guess is the Bucs must go 8-8 or better, or they might even have to make the playoffs. pewterreportjf: pewter410yrs – I'm worried about Dan Buenning. I think he's a good player, but I don't know if he's a good center. The Bucs think he can be a good center, but he's not proven yet. pewterreportjf: mabucnut – The Pewter Report Post-Draft Issue is on the printer as we type. It should be finished and mailed early next week. strickii: I know it Gruden said the rookies have to report in shape…but did any of our rookies looked like they spent the time working out leading up to the draft or did all look like they were on the banquet circuit truepirate: What is the take on Sears? Will he bet better than Buenning was out of the box? And if Buenning Doesn't make the transition, we have a lot of Decent Guards don't we? pewterreportjf: fbickley – From what we hear, David Boston is showing flashes of his former self this offseason. Put it this way — the Bucs are really excited about Boston this year. pewterreportsr: Hello, gang. Sorry I'm late. pewterreportjf: truepirate – The Bucs like the fact that Buenning is bigger and more athletic than John Wade. They also feel like he's better at the shotgun snap than Wade. He has some catching up to do from a mental standpoint though as the center is charged with recognizing blitzes and defensive packages at the line of scrimmage. bluetick: With Galloway, MC, Stovall, truepirate: Don't fret Scott. We know you were wraping up that Fab Five. Unc will be on you like glue if you don't. pewterreportjf: truepirate – Sears might struggle initially, but I think he'll be a good run blocker right away. That's his strength. dm4bucs: hey sr bluetick: Do you think we will see some 3-4 WR sets this season? pewterreportjf: bluetick – The Bucs have the receivers to run three- and four-receiver set(s), but they have to have the pass protection to do it. That will depend on how the tackles hold up in pass protection. pewterreportsr: Yes. There will be a SR's Fab Five later this afternoon. imabucnut: Okay Scott, you just made my day. :) bluetick: Gel Oline, Gel truepirate: Woo Hoo!!!!! pewter410yrs: jf/sr ,,, What are the chances Jeb Terry makes the Team?…espically since he's capable of long snapping>? dm4bucs: sweet sr pewterreportsr: It's going to be a good one, too. imabucnut: Who are our possible long snappers at this point? pewterreportjf: imabucnut – I plan on finding out which players are candidates to long snap this week. I know Andrew Economos is a good long snapper, but the Bucs would like to have a player that plays another position handle the long snapping if it's possible. strickii: Any rumors on whom the Bucs might be lloking at/are anticipating to be post June 1st cuts from other teams? dm4bucs: Any chance we bring anthony bryant back for TC? truepirate: Any word on Caddy and the Juggs Machine? Where do you think he stands on his pass protection too? I hope he's ready to take the next step. pewterreportjf: dm4bucs – I don't think there's much of a chance that Anthony Bryant will be back with the Bucs. They weren't thrilled with his work ethic. pewterreportsr: Anthony Bryant won't be back in Tampa Bay. pewterreportjf: truepirate – We haven't heard much about Cadillac Williams' pass-catching this offseason. To be honest, even if we heard it was good, I'd take it with a grain of salt. We heard Williams had improved his hands last offseason, and then that turned out to not be the case. truepirate: Do you think Coyer has the fire to motivate a kid like Sims? You said he has been well recieved, but we need Marinelli like production from our Dline. guest: Hey how will gaines adams make his mark this season? spartan: Scott, Jim, it might be a bit early for this, but are you/we planning another get together at TC? guest: will adams be a starter on the left side of the line? pewterreportjf: truepirate – The Bucs think Ryan Sims can benefit from a fresh start, just like Chris Hovan did with the Bucs. Even if Sims doesn't win a starting job, he could still stick as long as he can be a capable backup to Hovan at nose tackle. truepirate: Scott, when will you be looking at the DT/UT prospects for next year? pewterreportjf: spartan – Yes, we are going to have another training camp get-together. We think it will be on Saturday, August 4, but we have to wait until the training camp schedule is announced before we promote that date. pewterreportsr: Yes, there will be training camp get-together. It will either be in the big room at the Celebration Town Tavern or the ESPN Club at Disney's Boardwalk. pewterreportjf: The get-together will either be held at Celebration Town Tavern or ESPN Club. spartan: cool, tx che guevara: Guys, do you see Jovan Haye making a push at LE? As well as he came on late last season, he might be the guy to add size on the edge and push Spires out of a roster spot.. spartan: now back to football, how are things looking on the KR front? bluetick: Will any of the next OTAs be open to the media and how much? pewterreportjf: guest – I don't think Gaines Adams will make a great impact right away. I don't think he'll start right away either. I see Simeon Rice starting at right end and Greg Spires starting at left end. I see Adams coming in on passing plays to play right end where Rice moves over to play left end. pewterreportjf: bluetick – Unfortunately, the OTAs aren't open to the media, which really stinks. The good news is we can still find out which players are performing well and which ones aren't. It just takes us a little longer to come by that information as opposed to if we were watching ourselves. spartan: it seems that the Bucs seem to be keeping their fingers crossed on that one pewterreportjf: che guevara – No, I don't think Jovan Haye will challenge for playing time at left end. Word is right now that Haye is playing second-string under tackle in front of Ellis Wyms. pewter410yrs: Any Chance Kenyatta is brought back?….What happens if Trueblood goes down?…Davis? che guevara: Wow, so Wyms has some work to do in camp…. pewterreportsr: I think Gaines Adams will be a solid rotational pass rusher for the Bucs this year. I'm guessing 5 sacks as a rookie. guest: Who is the early favorite to lock up the last WR spot on the roster this year? Will this be the season that "3rd down" Ike Hillard might be cut? guest: So do you think Wyms most likely won't make this team? pewterreportsr: Yes. Jovan Haye is a try-hard guy who is really making an impression at under tackle. He needs to work on his pass rush ability, but he's a great run stuffer. Wyms better pick up the pace. imabucnut: Are there any players the Bucs have interest in after June 1 cuts? che guevara: Do you think it is realistic to say that Ken Darby could beat out Earnest Graham for the third RB job? Graham gives a lot of versatility (ST, RB/FB). Wouldn't Darby have to prove that he can do the same? pewterreportsr: If Chad Owens can wrestle the return man duties away from Mark Jones (which shouldn't be too hard), then I think he could be the last WR on the depth chart on the active roster. pewterreportjf: guest – I'll be interested in seeing Chas Gessner and how he performs in his second training camp with the Bucs. He started off hot last year but really cooled off toward the end of camp and into preseason. He'll have to make a mark on specail teams to earn a sixth receiver spot though. pewterreportsr: I just haven't seen enough of Ken Darby yet as a pro to say that he will beat out Earnest Graham. Graham is a favorite at One Buc Place because he's a good special teamer and doesn't make mistakes on offense. lvbuc: sr when will your next fab 5 be out pewterreportjf: che guevara – Kenneth Darby had an impressive rookie mini-camp and could sneak his way onto the roster in front of Earnest Graham. However, the Bucs might feel they can place Darby on the practice squad to allow him to develop for a year while Graham sticks on the active roster. That's my initial feeling of how it will play out. pewterreportsr: The June 1 date isn't as big as it used to be. In fact, you see more teams making roster cuts just prior to camp in late July rather than June 1. bluetick: MARK MY WORDS!!!! :) strickii: Any news if the rookie Peterson impressed during his 1st camp? pewterreportsr: The latest SR's Fab Five will be out this afternoon, followed by another one next week. pewterreportjf: guest – Ellis Wyms likely won't make the team this year. His salary cap value is over $4 million, which is too expensive for a third-string player. pewterreportjf: strick – We didn't hear a lot about Peterson at the rookie mini-camp. imabucnut: What areas of need would the Bucs be looking at in terms of any FA pickup later? che guevara: Do the Bucs see Jamie Winborn as a possible Mike? pewterreportsr: Peterson was okay, but I think he's pretty raw. He has some great physical traits that were evident in the rookie camp, but he'll be Coach Coyer's project this year. Better Coyer than Franklin. bluetick: After the draft, which positions still need to be addressed to you guys? pewterreportsr: Quincy Black will challenge Barrett Ruud at MLB. pewterreportjf: che guevara – Winborn could play middle linebacker, but it sounds like the Bucs are going to have Barrett Ruud and Quincy Black battle for that job. lvbuc: what re the chaces that Plummer shows up for manatory mini camp next month? pewterreportjf: bluetick – I'd feel comfortable with the Bucs going into training camp with their current roster. pewter410yrs: If Quincy Black wins the MLB job as some point, what happens to RUDD? pewterreportsr: That's a good question, bluetick. I think TE is still an issue, even with Stevens. I just don't see a Pro Bowl caliber TE on the roster. Finding a young, dominating under tackle. Carter is 33. Haye is a backup. Peterson is a project. pewterreportjf: lvbuc – The Bucs are working on trying to convince Jake Plummer to not retire and come play for them. There are some in the organization that feel Plummer can win the starting job if he reports and plays. pewterreportsr: I don't think Jake Plummer plays this year. I'd be shocked if showed up at a mini-camp, and surprised if he shows up at training camp. imabucnut: Will you also be surprised if he retires? bluetick: I agree Sr, but I still think LOT needs some talented youth, also guest: Do you feel Gruden will make major adjustments to training camp this year, such as using Joey Galloway in practice more to get in synch with our QBs? I know they were trying to protect his legs, but I felt, especially early in the year that he wasn't in synch with the QBs pewterreportsr: bluetick – Yes, and WR needs to get younger, but I think LT and WR are okay heading into 2007. che guevara: JF, enjoyed your last piece. You had the RB depth chart: williams, pittman, graham, alstott, askew. If Darby or another RB really impressed, which of this group do you think at this point would be the first to be released? pewterreportjf: guest – I don't see Jon Gruden having Joey Galloway practice more in training camp. However, I do anticipate Gruden playing his players more in camp and preseason this year. pewterreportsr: Good question, guest. I don't know if we'll see too many major adjustments on offense. I think the new personnel (Stevens, Petitgout, Garcia, Askew) will be the adjustments. pewterreportjf: che guevara – Thanks. If Kenneth Darby makes his mark on offense and special teams, the Bucs probably would part ways with Earnest Graham. pewterreportjf: Okay room. I've got to get going. lvbuc: thanks pewter410yrs: thanks guys pewterreportjf: Thanks for joining the PewterReport.com Chat Session today. We will post a trascript of the chat tomorrow. Take care. imabucnut: Thanks guys, we appreciate the time you give us! pewterreportsr: Thanks for coming. Be sure to look for the latest SR's Fab Five this afternoon.
