PEWTERREPORT.COM CHAT TRANSCRIPT – 7/10/07
pewterreportjf: Thanks for joining the PewterReport.com Chat Session this evening. Let the chat begin. bucfanskiz: sup flyn how was your vacation detroitbuc: sup mark2001: Some of the young D backs should be able to do well on special teams. yuccaneers: With the Buccaneers trying to move offensive lineman around in the past with it not panning out if the Buenning move to center doesnt work out for the team how big of a set back will it be for the offensive line as a whole this season? pewterreportjf: My vacation was great. Had to get it in before training camp begins. :) bucfanskiz: Do you see the Bucs taking a flyer on anyone in the supplamental draft guest: Hello all cadillac 24: How likely is it that the Bucs will trade for a player before camp and what position will the bucs look to trade for? detroitbuc: i hoep zemaitis can move up on the depth chart this year stu: who do you see starting at LG? bucfanskiz: SEARS cadillac 24: Are there any players on the trade block that the Bucs are targeting-maybe Kris Jenkins? pewterreportjf: yuccaneers – I share your concern regarding Tampa Bay's center position. The Bucs feel Dan Buenning has a shot to win and solidify that job, but their track record for moving guys around along the O-line hasn't been good. I don't think it will be a huge setback if Buenning doesn't pan out at center because the Bucs could go out in free agency and sign one in 2008. However, it would stink if the center position is a problem for the Bucs this year since they could have drafted the best center in the draft in Ryan Kalil, but elected to pass on him. goldengeese: is it true the bucs offered blue adams, jon bradley, and ryan nece to swapt spots with the lions? che guevara: lol pewterreportjf: bucfanskiz – No, I don't see the Bucs taking anyone in the supplemental draft. From what I understand they're not big fans of it. pewterlightning: Has there been any talk about Tank Johnson, concerning the Bucs? pewterreportjf: cadillac24 – I haven't heard much from the Bucs in regards to any potential interest they might have in Kris Jenkins. One player to keep an eye on is Philadelphia running back Ryan Moats. The Bucs loved him coming out of the draft, and word has it that he could be traded or released. yuccaneers: that would leave the Bucs with three LG's then and a huge problem because they wasted another day one pick on aguy that could have been used at another spot che guevara: Jim, Why is Lionel Gates still on the team? cadillac 24: that's a good question guest: hello pewterreportjf: goldengeese – The Bucs would have loved to have swap No. 1 picks with the Lions by giving up Ryan Nece, Blue Adams and Jon Bradley. We actually received a tip from a good source that this actually happened, but the source waited a few minutes before telling us he was messing with us. We didn't find it too funny at the time, but we can laugh about it now. cadillac 24: gates isn't likely to make the team anyway mark2001: Have Wisconsin friends that thought Thomas's knee has about a 50/50 chance of lasting. Glad we took Adams. yuccaneers: With the Bucs putting some much on the pass rush do you think the run defense will suffer from this? stu: is askew our day 1 starting FB pewterreportjf: pewterlightning – The Bucs have not expressed any interest in signing Tank Johnson. His agent recently told me so. yuccaneers: Last season Gruden wanted to get Alex Smith more involved in the passing attack is he still working towards that? detroitbuc: Can our new speed on D contain the saints offence this year? stu: Most outstanding player at the minicamp? pewterreportjf: che guevera – The Bucs wanted to let the legal system run its course with Lionel Gates. They have more information than I do, and they apparently were okay with the punishment he received from the court. cadillac 24: when will the Bucs start to sign more of their draft picks-days before camp? guest: STRICK here: Allen suggested we would be active in trades prior to TC…any rumors who we may try to ship out bucfanskiz: any signings imanent pewterreportjf: yuccaneers – Jon Gruden wanted to get Alex Smith more involved in the passing game last season? Boy, that's an understatement. Gruden actually designed specific plays to get Smith the ball, but poor pass protection, no running game and poor quarterback play hindered that plan. Gruden hopes to get Smith more involved this year, though. che guevara: Jim, I'm heading to Orlando for TC and looking for a good place to stay. Any suggestions? yuccaneers: Any word on Ryan Sims and if he has picked up the Defense schem and how has he looked? cadillac 24: Meridian Palms che guevara che guevara: lol pewterreportjf: stu – The most impressive player at the mandatory mini-camp in my mind was wide receiver Maurice Stovall. He wasn't flashy, but he was solid and consistent, and he's come a long way from his rookie season. Keep an eye on Stovall — he could beat out Michael Clayton for a starting job in training camp. mark2001: Any new news about Plummer? Will Bruce go after the money this year if he doesn't make it to camp or wait another year? che guevara: Stovall reminds me of Herman Moore che guevara: If we're lucky detroitbuc: I hope so dabucs12188: how did sabby and adams look at the mandatory mini camps pewterreportjf: guest – We've been working on trying to find out the names of players on the trading block, but there aren't a lot of people talking. The one player to keep an eye on is running back Ryan Moats. Philly is apparently shopping him. cadillac 24: Anyone going to Clayton's hoop jam this sunday? guest: harold carmichael pewterlightning: If Stovall beats out Clayton, then who do you see as being the 3rd and 4th reciever between CLayton Hilliard and Boston? che guevara: we're setting high comparisons bucfanskiz: is it true that Clayton is writing a new book yuccaneers: Jim any word on Ryan Sims progress and if he has showed any flash during the last mini camp? pewterreportjf: che guevera – If you're looking for a great place to stay for Bucs training camp in Orlando, you should check out the Meridian Palms Hotel. It's a great place and is 2.5 miles away from Disney's Wide World of Sports. Pewter Report is staying there throughout training camp. Here is a link to their site. MeridianPalmsOrlando.com. che guevara: Michael Clayton hoop jam? And what's the title? 101 Ways To Drop A Pass bucfanskiz: "If I could just catch the D@#? Ball" che guevara: lol nice.. you out did me cadillac 24: lol bucfanskiz: he got his inspration from Key woodman5: how many draft choices will make the roster this year ? pewterlightning: "Throw Me The Damn Injuries" yuccaneers: How has Gus Bradley been doing since being name the linebackers coach, he has his hands full with the rookies and does he approach the practice sessions any different then Barry? bucfanskiz: Sorry Jim I had to pewterreportjf: mark2001 – Jake Plummer is in the mountains, from what I hear. He plans on staying retired this year. The Bucs aren't in a hurry to go after the $7 million in bonuses he received in Denver because they don't want to rock the boat and spoil any chance he might have of playing for the Bucs in 2008. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the Bucs reminded Plummer of this option in an effort to get him to report to camp. At this point, I don't think Plummer plays for the Bucs in 2007. dabucs12188: Who was the most stand out rookie in the mini camps? Which rookie are you most excited about going into training camp? mark2001: How strong are Boston's chances are of sticking this year? Sounds like he is gotten alot of the old "Boston" game back. pewterreportjf: yuccaneers – I haven't heard a lot about Ryan Sims and how he performed. I'll keep a closer eye on him at training camp. I can tell you Sims is a big dude, though. che guevara: so was Anthony Bryant pewterlightning: If Stovall beats out Clayton, then who do you see as being the 3rd and 4th reciever between CLayton Hilliard and Boston? che guevara: I hope Sims has some game guest: you stated during the minicamp thatPittman, Clayton Boston cadillac 24: I think Boston has a good chance of making the team this year yuccaneers: well lets hope he can be a plugger and show some of the ability that made him a high draft pick stu: does Greg peterson make this team on the basis he was a 5th roung pick? pewterreportjf: woodman – I wouldn't be surprised to see as many as eight of Tampa Bay's draft picks from 2007 make the team this season. The one guy to really keep an eye on is linebacker Adam Hayward. He's a real sleeper. cadillac 24: I think that's how Jenkins make the team last year pewterreportjf: dabucs – I think Adam Hayward was quite impressive during the mini-camp. stu: How many OL were active for regular season games last year? che guevara: Training Camp performance questions are conjecture at this point… But not for too much longer! pewterreportjf: mark2001 – David Boston stands a great chance of making the team this year. Not only making the team, but making an impact on offense and special teams. He looked pretty good this offseason. The Bucs are hoping he can just stay healthy. guest: are we happy w/ owens as kr…or do we go after someone else cadillac 24: how many LBs do you think the Bucs will keep woodman5: was heyward more impressive than q. black pewterreportjf: cadillac24 – Given the fact that the Bucs are toying with playing more 3-4 defense this season, the Bucs could keep seven linebackers on their 53-man roster. guest: Who will be the biggest pleasent surprise of the off-season? yuccaneers: if the line comes together will we finally see the full west coastt system run this season allowing all five player eligible to go out and open the offense game plan up? pewterreportjf: woodman – Quincy Black was really impressive at the rookie mini-camp, but Adam Hayward had a really impressive offseason and mandatory mini-camp. They both looked good. dabucs12188: What rookies do you think will actually start and how big of an impact might they bring? pewterlightning: If Stovall beats out Clayton, then who do you see as being the 3rd and 4th reciever between CLayton Hilliard and Boston? che guevara: JF, do you think the Bucs have written off Ryan Nece? yuccaneers: Comparing Gaines Adams to Rice who has the quickest first step? pewterreportjf: yuccaneers – That's the plan. We haven't seen the offense Jon Gruden would like to run in Tampa yet. He feels he has the quarterback now in Jeff Garcia, and based on some of the plays they were running this offseason, I can tell you that the playbook looks like it has opened up quite a bit compared to previous seasons. che guevara: lol, you really want that question answered Pewterlightning. I'll answer it for you: Boston che guevara: Clayton will be too busy writing books and planning basketball tourneys pewterreportjf: pewterlightning – If Maurice Stovall beats out Michael Clayton for the starting job, I don't think Clayton is necessarily guaranteed the No. 3 job because of David Boston's play. It's going to be really close and interesting to see how it plays out. pewterlightning: che, Ryan Nece is still a good ST player nonetheless yuccaneers: well that should help, with the game plan being so watered down over the last few season should keep defesnes guessing guest: Who will be the biggest shocker of the season…who will really shock with their contributions to the team? pewterreportjf: che guevera – No, the Bucs haven't written off Ryan Nece, but he needs to have a stellar camp to justify his roster spot. Nece has a lot of young and talented players pushing him for his job and roster spot. I do believe Nece could be the odd man out this year. che guevara: He does run the field well on teams. But Black and Hayward could add some thump there, too. mark2001: How is Petitgout doing relative to his health. Davis seems only athletic enough to be a career backup at the LT and if Luke doesn't stay on the field i'm not to confident about our protection on that side. che guevara: I guess TC will tell the tale yuccaneers: Who has Gradkowski looked throwing the long ball and his pre reads during mini camp? pewterreportjf: guest – I'm not sure about a shocker on the team. But I think we'd all be shocked if the Bucs finally returned a kickoff for a touchdown. :) stu: Has Q Black been playing more ILB or OLB cadillac 24: What's the weakest position on the Bucs? guest: FS pewterreportjf: mark2001 – Luke Petitgout is still a mystery to me. He was limited at times this offseason, which was strange since he's new to the offense. You can't really evaluate offensive linemen until the pads come on. Let's just hope he's healthy and stays that way. stu: OWENS TO THE HOUSE—-1ST RETURN FOR TD IN BUCS HISTORY yuccaneers: Jim you mention Nec as beiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii odd man out but his cntract is cap friendly and has a few years left while Winborn is older and has just this year left do you know something more? pewterreportjf: yuccaneers – Bruce Gradkowski looks more comfortable in the offense, and he should be since this is his second year. However, he's still struggling to connect with receivers on the deep ball, which is disappointing. The good news for Bruce is Gruden's offense features more short-to-intermediate passes and patterns. cadillac 24: Who's staying at the Meridian Palms Hotel? che guevara: woot woot pewterreportjf: cadillac24 – The weakest position on the Bucs could be quarterback if Jeff Garcia goes down. They're one play away from having Gradkowski back in the starting lineup. I'd say center is a real concern right now as well, and although Kevin Carter is on the team under tackle is still up in the air. pewterreportjf: stu – Quincy Black has been playing more middle linebacker. mtnbucman: Any chance Sears has a future at LOT even tho he projects to G ? yuccaneers: Jim out of Davis / Zemaits / Cox who do you think end up being the fourth and fith coner come traing camp? pewterreportjf: Cadillac24 – Scott Reynolds and I are staying at the Meridian Palms Hotel. My wife and I actually stayed there during my vacation last week, and it was really nice. I highly recommend it for anyone heading to training camp this year. Plus, remember that the Pewter Report Get-Together is on Aug. 4. We are all heading over to the ESPN Zone on Disney Boardwalk after the morning practice. We hope to see all of you there as it will be a great time. stu: OWENS JUST TOOK ANOTHER ONE TO THE HOUSE—BUCS 14-HAWKS 0 yuccaneers: Jim what can you tell us about Donald penn the tackle they signed off the Viking practice squad last season any info about his skill set and does he have a chance to be the backup RT this coming season? guest: Yuk – I think with Cox facing 4 games on the bench he'll be looking for employment elsewhere cadillac 24: I will also be staying at the Meridian Palms hotel, but I can't make it to the get-together pewterreportjf: mtnbucman – No, I don't think Arron Sears has a future at left tackle at all. He is a guard. I'd be really concerned if Sears got pushed into action at left tackle. che guevara: as would the team's QB mtnbucman: ahead of Davis ? mark2001: It appears to me that Gradkowski hasn't enough arm strength to throw the deep ball with touch. He can through it out, but I just don't see the touch. Hopefully I'm wrong. pewterreportjf: yuccaneers – With Torrie Cox getting suspended for the first four games of the season, I think Alan Zemaitis and Sammy Davis could make the 53-man roster initially. che guevara: touch isn't about arm strenght che guevara: it's about footwork and timing pewterreportjf: yuccaneers – Donald Penn is a player to keep an eye on. The Bucs feel like he has a real chance of making the team this year. He received a lot of playing time during the offseason. yuccaneers: that is what i was thinking but you never know with Jackson being able to play conrenr and the team still has Pearson to play safety and speacial teams pewterreportjf: cadillac24 – Did you already make your reservations at the Meridian? Did you tell 'em Pewter Report sent you? They're offering Bucs fans a 10% discount. stu: is Simms going to make the final roster stu: Garcia, Grads, McCown cadillac 24: Yeah, my mom made the reservations a long time ago, didn't say that PR send us mark2001: He seems to have to over extend himself to get the ball down field. I'm not saying his footwork and timing is right. Hopefully it is as you say. woodman5: nobody is talking about cadillac how is he looking this off season yuccaneers: There has been plenof talk about Darbys hands and vision how is his cut back abiltiy and balance? pewterreportjf: stu – I'm not sure if Chris Simms will make the 53-man roster at this point. By the end of the mandatory mini-camp it appeared as though Simms was the fourth-string quarterback behind Jeff Garcia, Bruce Gradkowski and Luke McCown. Simms just didn't look right throwing the ball. It's really unfortunate because it's not his fault. che guevara: yeah he has a difficult time with deep ball timing…. it can be taught, though. pewterreportjf: cadillac 24 – You might want to have your mother call again and they'll probably give you the 10% discount on the stay if you mention Pewter Report and the Bucs. che guevara: Simms had trouble early on with it. Now it's one of his strengths stu: that is a lot of $$$ for a 4th string QB cadillac 24: If Ryan Nece beats out Cato June for a starting job and with June being guarenteed a starting job on D, where else can Cato June play? guest: he won't stay if he's 4th string cadillac 24: Thanks JF, I'll tell her stu: thanks guest yuccaneers: So then the Bucs are no better at the qb spot then last season if Garcia goes down, what a shame did Gruden not feel that Carr was an upgrade? pewterreportjf: woodman – Actually, Cadillac Williams had a very impressive offseason. He was catching the ball well out of the backfield and he looked fresh. I'm looking forward to seeing how he does in training camp. He needs to stay healthy. dabucs12188: Is there any chance the Bucs will trade away SImms? guest: simms to the g-men…..mark it down che guevara: no.. stu: could the Bucs getaway with putting simms on the PUP list guest: Most teams would suck if their starting QB went down…I'm just happy we have one who can ball finally…even if he is 73 che guevara: If he plays well enough to have any trade value, then we need to keep him in case of injury che guevara: don't want another last year woodman5: will the starting players get more time in pre-season games this year it seems like that hurt them last year pewterreportjf: cadillac24 – Cato June saw a significant amount of action at weakside linebacker when Derrick Brooks was out due to his mother's passing. The Bucs think June could eventually succeed Brooks there or even replace him in nickel situations this season if Brooks is showing signs of slowing down. pewterlightning: JF, do you see any past(lynch, sapp) and present(def. Brooks, Ronde?) getting into the HOF? yuccaneers: There has been plenty of talk about Darbys hands and vision how is his cut back abiltiy and balance? pewterreportjf: stu – We're looking into whether Chris Simms would be a candidate for the Physically Unable To Perform list. guest: Who thinks the Bucs will be back in the top 5 of D's with the defensive upgrades they've made mark2001: I wanted to trade Simms a few years ago. But the kid has shown me alot of heart and I'm glad we kept him. Sad to see his current situation and I hope we PUP him and give him another year. guest: ??? stu: agreed Mark guest: top 15 cadillac 24: top 10 mtnbucman: How does Askew look ? cadillac 24: can't tell until the pads are on che guevara: askew looks like a big RB pewterreportjf: pewterlightning – I think Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks are Hall of Famers. John Lynch might get in, too. I do not think Mike Alstott will make the Hall of Fame. I don't see Ronde Barber making it, either, only because he's always been viewed as a "system" cornerback by people around the league. pewterreportjf: Okay, room. I've got to get going. guest: any news on what type of injury sears had cadillac 24: thanks JF che guevara: can't wait to see Askew blow up LBs pewterreportjf: Great questions this evening. Thanks for attending the chat session. We will make a chat transcript available on www.pewterreport.com tomorrow morning. guest: With Simm back, Kelly Healthy, KC at UT, P-Buc playing nickel, Gaines getting 8-10 sacks, Cato picking balls as a LB, and RAH RAH coaching the secondary I could see top 3 mark2001: Thanks for your time and the information, JF. pewterreportjf: FYI – Bucs quarterback Jeff Garcia will be signing autographs at the Citrus Park Mall Sports Fan-Attic location from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 21. pewterlightning: Thanks pewterlightning: JF, you going to read Dungy's book? guest: simeon isn't back, nor kelly cadillac 24: for the Garcia signing pewterreportjf: Also be on the lookout for the Pewter Report Training Camp Issue, which will be mailed this week and made available in PDF format on PewterReport.com. pewterreportjf: Take care, Bucs fans.
