PEWTERREPORT.COM CHAT TRANSCRIPT – 10/30/07
pewterreportjf: Hello, Bucs fans. welcome to the chat session.
guest: as a TE
pewterreportsr: Right here, guys. Hello.
detroitbuc: could he help this late in the season
antcam: Give us some uplifting news
detroitbuc: whats the word sr/jf
antcam: any thing will do
strick-9: JF/SR: any reason why Trotter was active for jax
pewterreportjf: antcam – The Bucs have a bye week after their home game against the Cardinals. If they can beat the Cardinals and improve to 5-4, they'll be in pretty good shape heading into their bye and will get some injured players back for the second half of the season.
detroitbuc: great news
pewterreportsr: I don't know if the Bucs have an interest in Mike Williams. He's kind of flamed out in two places that have needed WRs. If the Bucs take a chance on him, it will be a one-year, league-minimum-type deal.
pewterreportsr: I think Mike Williams needs to bulk up, toughen up and play tight end.
detroitbuc: they should have got grady jack
strick-9: and lay off the pipe
pewterreportjf: I wouldn't be surprised if the Bucs waited to see what happens with wide receiver Mike Williams. If he's still unsigned come January, I wouldn't be surprised if the Bucs signed him to a one-year deal and brought him to training camp.
guest: Any interest in Tim Dwight
strick-9: he signed
pewterreportsr: Believe it or not, I think Tampa Bay can still wind up 9-7 or even 10-6 if the injuries just stop and they win their next two games.
strick-9: w/ Oak
guest: that sucks
antcam: I know it's early, but do the bucs have their sights set on D. Anderson this offseason
antcam: I can believe that Scott
pewterreportsr: Grady Jackson would not have been a good fit in Tampa Bay. I think the Bucs would play Ryan Sims before going after Grady Jackson.
strick-9: are you guys surprised we didn't see more of a 3-4 this past game?
guest: I dont like Galloway on Special Teams
dbo2440: anyword on BK… if it looks like he will play this week or not?
pewterreportjf: strick – I will be writing about why the Bucs haven't been using the 3-4 defense more this season in my next on-line column.
detroitbuc: what can we do to win more games
buc_sid: Anyone else notice Buchanon and Galloway arguing over who was going to return punts?
guest: He looked pretty lazy on the second to last punt return, and he holds the ball out like a retard
spiderman1314: Did I miss something and Mike Williams got cut?
antcam: no and yeah spidey
pewterreportjf: dbo2440 – With the trio of wide receivers the Arizona Cardinals have, Tampa Bay would like to have Brian Kelly back for this game. However, the Bucs would also like to give him the bye week to rest it and be that much healthier and ready to go for the second half of the season.
guest: If he had hustled to stoped the ball then we would have had decent field position on our second to last drive
dbo2440: any word on spires?
pewterreportsr: strick-9 – I'm surprised the Bucs haven't used more 3-4 on one hand, but on the other hand, I just don't think Monte has the confidence in a new scheme. He's a pretty vanilla coach when you think about it. There aren't a lot of exotic blitzes that are used in Tampa Bay.
pewterreportsr: I'd rather see Buchanon or Galloway as a return man than Chad Lucas.
pewterreportjf: dbo2440 – We will find out more on the extent of Greg Spires' calf injury tomorrow at One Buccaneer Place.
strick-9: I think Oak wants us to sign Williams so they can release Rhodes and we'll have a lower waiver priority!!!
guest: I would rather have P-Buc
detroitbuc: i would like to see a new defensive cord
pewterreportjf: I'm still trying to figure out what the Bucs saw in Chad Lucas to put him back there to return kicks.
antcam: I would rather see u in there than see C. Lucas
strick-9: Peter Warrick
detroitbuc: same here jf
pewterreportsr: I think this is Spires' last year in Tampa Bay. The same could be said of Kevin Carter. The word I've gotten is that both players are solid against the run, but they don't have much left in the tank as far as generating a pass rush.
detroitbuc: who is out on the street that can come in and help us
dbo2440: what do the bucs think of michael bennett so far are they going to try to get him involved more?
cadillac 24: Do you think that Jeff Garcia will bounce back from his poor performance and have a good game vs. the Cardinals.
guest: That was rediculous, they could probably get better production their from bennett
guest: Garcia will bounce back
pewterreportjf: dbo2440 – The Bucs like Michael Bennett and the speed he brings to the running back position. Jon Gruden has worked some plays in for Bennett, and that will continue as the season progresses. He needs to catch the ball better than he did vs. Jacksonville, though.
strick-9: I only credit Garcia w/ 1 int…..the second was while being hit and the last was on a prayer
guest: J-ville has a really stoud D
dbo2440: what do you see as a key need for this team besides the defensive line?
pewterreportsr: I think Tampa Bay might sign CB Marcus Hamilton to the active roster to replace Cox.
cadillac 24: Which Bucs will be back for the Arizona game? Could Mike Pittman be back?
pewterreportjf: cadilac 24 – Yes, I think Jeff Garcia had a bad game. He was under heavy pressure. Garcia was solid up until Sunday, so I expect him to come out and have one hell of a game vs. Arizona.
detroitbuc: after playing the JAGS i think we can hang with any team in the NFC
strick-9: offensively but defensivey is another question
pewterreportsr: cadillac24 – Pittman wants to come back this week for the Cardinals game. That's a personal game for him. I think he should wait to come back at Atlanta after the bye week.
antcam: SR/JF any news on the D. Rhodes situation
guest: Is losing cox for the season a big loss for the special teams?
detroitbuc: strick the D needs to get back on track if we are going to win the divison
pewterreportjf: dbo2440 – The Bucs need some special teams contributors. They've lost a lot of them to injuries and injured reserve. If the injury bug can stop biting and the Bucs can get some players back from the injuries they could be in good shape in terms of making a playoff push here.
dbo2440: who takes cox's spot on the roster now
pewterreportsr: I saw a lot of gloom and doom on the boards after the loss, but I think the Bucs are right in the thick of the division race and right in the thick of the NFC playoff race. There should be doom and gloom if the Bucs got trounced, as they did last year. Beating yourself isn't as bad, in my opinion.
emfresh: when is brian kelly coming back? It seems he has been questionable every week
buc_sid: Any word on Spires yet guys? If he can't go does Carter move there or the Arena League guy?
pewterreportjf: guest – Losing Torrie Cox was huge. He was Tampa Bay's best special teams player. The good news is the Bucs went 3-1 without Cox, who was on suspension earlier in the season. The bad news is the Bucs are not a better team without Cox, especially on special teams.
strick-9: if we win 3 of our 4 remaining division games we are set
pewterreportsr: antcam- I don't think Rhodes has been cut by Oakland, has he?
cadillac 24: How is Gaines Adams coming along? I think he had a better game against the Jags and hopefully he can improve more and more every week.
strick-9: i think they wait to see if Bush can play
pewterreportjf: Buc_sid – we will find out the extent of Greg Spires' calf injury tomorrow at One Buc Place. Kevin Carter will be one of the players used to play in his place. Gaines Adams and Greg White will also be in the rotation.
pewterreportsr: I think Greg White and Gaines Adams get more playing time if Spires is out this week. I thought Gaines' pass rush on his half sack vs. Jacksonville was his best pass rush of the season. Hopefully it is a sign of things to come.
guest: Do you think the bucs might make a waiver claim on mike williams now that oakland has cut him? i'm sorry if its already been asked
antcam: I read somewhere the raiders don't want the Bucs or the Broncos to get him on the waiver wire so they scrambling to see if some team is interested in before either of us select
pewterreportjf: cadillac 24 – Gaines Adams' sack was impressive on Sunday, but he needs to be more consistent as a pass rusher. This should come in time. I still think Adams is better againt the run than Simeon Rice ever was in Tampa Bay.
pewterreportsr: The Bucs certainly won't claim Mike Williams off waivers. They might wait to see if he clears waivers and offer him a one-year, league-minimum deal. He's a real immature player and I don't know if the Bucs want to disrupt their awesome team chemistry for a player like Williams right now.
strick-9: if we need a kr…what happened to Courtney Roby, he was fast as can be.
pewterreportjf: guest – I don't think the Bucs will claim Mike Williams off of waivers. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they signed him in January if he hasn't signed elsewhere. With the rash of injuries this team has suffered, the Bucs need players that can contribute right away, especially on special teams.
emfresh: will the bucs re sign brian kelly this year? he is hurt an awful lot
dbo2440: is this the last year of John Wade, someone brought up on the mess. boards that he can not hike in the shotgun and i agree with that after watching him. do you see the bucs trying to get a C in the offseason or do the think buenning will be ok there
pewterreportsr: emfresh – Kelly still has a year left on his contract. He certainly isn't helping his chances of getting a lucrative contract extension by being injured.
pewterreportjf: enfresh – Brian Kelly is under contract with the Bucs through the 2008 season, so I don't see them signing him to an extension given his recent battle with injuries and the fact that he's 31.
detroitbuc: i dont think Mike can help us this late in th eseason
cadillac 24: Speaking of Rice, what do you think his future is going to be? He doesn't seem as productive anymore and he isn't likely to return to the Broncos. Will he retire after this season? Could the Bucs give him another chance?
pewterreportsr: The Bucs tried to replace John Wade this year. They'll try again next year.
detroitbuc: When i sBrooks going to hang it up??
bucboy: just need to get healthy! win this week somehow and come back after the bye
strick-9: we need jared allen
pewterreportsr: cadillac24 – I think Rice might be done. He had a reconstruction of the shoulder from what I've been told, and I think he's 33. If he's not producing now, I don't see him being any better at age 34 or 35.
pewterreportjf: dbo2440 – Yes, John Wade is scheduled to become an unrestircted free agent at the end of the season. The Bucs likely will give Dan Buenning another chance to win the starting center job next year. If there's a solid veteran center available in free agency, the Bucs likely will target him and let Wade go.
cadillac 24: Which centers can the Bucs go after next year? Is Matt Birk a possibility?
pewterreportsr: strick-9 – I'm with you. I love Jared Allen. The guy is a high-motor baller. I think KC franchises him, though.
antcam: What's the word with D. Buenning rehab?
pewterreportjf: detroitbuc – Your guess is as good as mine in terms of when Derrick Brooks might retire. I would think he would not be in the Bucs' plans past the 2008 season.
strick-9: i believe so too….but justin smith might be an option
bucboy: D hasn't played with same intensity the last 2 weeks
cadillac 24: What's the future of Mike Alstott? How's his injury healing? Will he be back?
detroitbuc: bucboy i think the D is out of gas
pewterreportsr: detroitbucs – Brooks is still playing at a reasonably high level. Everyone points to his missed tackle of Greg Jones, but that was his only gaffe on Sunday. He had 10 tackles and was really flying to the ball. He's playing a lot better than last year in my opinion.
buc_sid: I certainly hope not, Askew has been outstanding
dbo2440: how about haye, i think he has shown alot…. do the bucs like him in there and see a future?
antcam: Alex Brown would have been a nice pick up this offseason. What about next?
bucboy: could be, they were ballin at beginning of the year
pewterreportjf: cadillac 24 – There's no official news on Mike Alstott's future. However, we believe the Bucs will hold a ceremony at Tampa Bay's regular season finale to honor him, and there he might announce his retirement from the NFL. That's our guess. I don't see Mike Alstott returning to the Bucs as a player in 2008.
cadillac 24: Will Gaines Adams start at RE now that Greg Spires is injured?
pewterreportsr: cadillac24 – I'd be surprised if Alstott plays again, especially if Gruden is head coach. And even if he isn't, is a new coach going to want to come and give a 34-year old FB who is coming off a second neck injury a chance when B.J. Askew is playing so well? Probably not.
detroitbuc: all i know is we need this win
pewterreportsr: I expect Tampa Bay to address the D-line and center position next offseason via the draft and free agency.
bucboy: yes they do, but honestly, with all the injuries and who they have played, 4-4 ain't bad at this point
strick-9: we should see plenty of will allen in dime packages this wekend
detroitbuc: yes that would as well as WR
bucboy: need to TCB the 2nd half
pewterreportjf: detroitbuc – You are correct. The Bucs need to beat the Cardinals this Sunday. They cannot afford to go into their bye week at 4-5 and having lost three straight games. They need to take momentum into the bye week and come out of it with some healthy players.
dbo2440: is there a chance that alstott stays around this team next year, the way hugh douglas did in philly?
pewterreportsr: This is a pivotal game for the Bucs. If they win this game, I think there is a lot of optimism through the bye week. If they lose three straight games, I think doubt begins to set in during the second half of the season and they would be lucky to finish 8-8.
bucboy: i hated the deep ball on 3rd down even though ike was open.
strick-9: no props for stovall….thought he played very well
detroitbuc: Askew is doing a good job i wish he would get th erock more
bucboy: move the chains and kick a game winning FG
pewterreportjf: The Bucs just need to stop beating themselves, just as they have these past two weeks. They can correct the mistakes they've been making.
pewterreportsr: dbo2440 – The Bucs will give Alstott a chance to stay with the team in some form or fashion.
dbo2440: what do you guys think of J. Haye?
bucboy: i love haye
dbo2440: me too
pewterreportsr: detroitbuc – Askew is making the most of his opportunity. The more yardage he gets, the more opportunities he'll get.
cadillac 24: Will Gaines Adams start at RE now that Greg Spires is injured?
antcam: i think he's awesome
pewterreportjf: dbo2440 – I think Jovan Haye is an upgrade over Booger McFarland and Ellis Wyms, but the Bucs could still use an upgrade over Haye. Tampa Bay needs an under tackle that can dominate. Haye is not that type of player. He's good, but not great.
guest: as good as matt is with his field goals, his kickoffs are short more often then not. on sunday the momentum changed (imo) after we went up by 6 and kicked off and the ball only went to the 20 and that was with the wind. any chance of addressing this problem in the future?
cadillac 24: Do you think that Trotter will be activated again for the Cardinals game?
pewterreportsr: I think Haye is a decent player. I don't think he has a high ceiling, though. I don't think he'll ever be a dominant-type of player, although I would love to be wrong.
bucboy: at least he shows motor and emotion, few others do
strick-9: haye doesn't face double team…yet, how many sacks
pewterreportsr: cadillac24 – I don't think so. There hasn't been any need for Trotter. Remember, he's not an ideal fit for this defense. His weakness is dropping into coverage. As long as Ruud, June and Brooks are healthy, there is no need for Trotter,
detroitbuc: man we nee da beast at UT
strick-9: peterson is impressive
antcam: he's leading the team strick
pewterreportjf: cadillac 24 – The Bucs probably will not let us know if Jeremiah Trotter will be active for Sunday's game until Sunday. Remember — Barrett Ruud is playing outstanding football. As long as he stays healthy Trotter probably won't see the field on defense. It's more of a credit to Ruud than it is a knock on Trotter.
netsbucscardsfan: Hey SR what do you think the chances are of us landing both jared allen and albert haynesworth in the off-season
dbo2440: still it seems he gets alot of tackles for stopping the run
cadillac 24: I just can't understand why Trotter would sign here if he's not going to get to play.
strick-9: antcam: yet, adams is only 1.5 sacks behind
bucboy: what's a sack? i forgot
pewterreportsr: netsbucscardsfan – I don't think the Bucs will pursue Haynesworth hard (i.e. they won't offer him the most money because he's only playing great in a contract year) and I think KC franchises Allen.
antcam: i thought he had 4 on the season?
pewterreportjf: netsbucscardsfan – Tampa Bay is scheduled to have $30-plus million in cap room in 2008. That said, the Bucs will have the opportunity to sign several good veteran players in free agency. However, don't expect them to overpay for too many players. They just got out of cap hell and do not wish to return to it anytime soon.
cadillac 24: How's Paris Warren doing. I saw him at the game this weekend and he's not on crutches anymore.
dbo2440: do you see the bucs trying to move BK next year, and bring in someone for the nickel behind barber and PBuc
dabucs12188: what fa dt will be available next year?
pewterreportsr: cadillac24 – There wasn't a lot of interest in him, apparently, and he's still making over $1 million.
netsbucscardsfan: i wish we could get allen 8 sacks in 5 games is pretty scary rate
strick-9: sr/jf; do we convert our excess cap this year to likely to be earned bonuses…that way we'd have more cap room next
pewterreportjf: cadillac 24 – Paris Warren should be ready to go when training camp rolls around next July. I wonder how well he'll do though since he wasn't a fast player to begin with. If he sustained ligament damage it could impact his ability to separate from defenders. We'll see.
pewterreportsr: dbo440 – I think P-Buc has a bright future in Tampa Bay. He's only had less than one year of Raheem Morris' teaching, too. Imagine how much better he'll be next year.
bucboy: they are going to have to blitz or it will be a long year on 3rd down
cadillac 24: Will Gaines Adams get more playing time vs. Arizona with Spires being out.
bucboy: p buc is a player
pewterreportsr: cadillac24 – Adams will get more playing time due to Spires' injury.
dbo2440: so do you think they move BK next year?
pewterreportjf: db02440 – I don't know if the Bucs will attempt to trade Brian Kelly. I'm not sure what kind of value he has at this point. Hopefully Kelly can get healthy. The defense misses him.
detroitbuc: if Arizone kills us on 3rd down and win i will die
rstroud: should we have challenged m. jones td?
antcam: how come M. Kiffn didnt blitz Q. Gray?
bucboy: they better pressure warner or bad news with boldin and fitz
pewterreportsr: bucboy – I think the Bucs will blitz more depending on who their opponent is. The problem with the Bucs' blitzes is I don't think they disguise them well. Tampa Bay hasn't recorded a sack this year from a back 7 player except for Phillips on opening day.
detroitbuc: because monte is lossing it
pewterreportjf: antcam – The Bucs just aren't a good blitzing team, and they don't have that many blitz packeges. This defense is designed to get pressure with the front four. Right now the front four isn't getting the pressure necessary to sack the quarterback and create turnovers. That needs to change in a hurry.
bucboy: i agree sr, and it doesn't work either
pewterreportsr: antcam – The Jags used max protect a lot (so blitzes aren't going to get there) and the Jags only threw the ball 16 times.
bucboy: barber is the best blitzer but they need bk back to do it more
strick-9: funny how rhonda has alot of sacks blitzing off the corner a few years aGO
cadillac 24: Who do you think will go to the Pro Bowl this year for the Bucs? Will Garcia/Ruud have a shot?
pewterreportjf: bucboy – That is true. Ronde Barber is one hell of a blitzer and Monte Kiffin does a nice job of designing blitzes for Barber. But that seems to be the only one that works.
netsbucscardsfan: When do we start to look for garcia's successor and please dont tell me its gradkowski
antcam: What's wrong with Grads>
guest: yet, Barber hasn't had a sack since 2005
detroitbuc: if Grad had a deep ball he would be ok
pewterreportsr: bucboy – You are right. I don't think Monte trusts his DBs to blitz Barber without BK being on the field.
pewterreportjf: netsbucscardsfan – The Bucs like the idea of having Bruce Gradkowski groom behind Jeff Garcia, but they're still interested in luring Jake Plummer out of retirement. Believe it or not, they view Plummer as the ideal successor for Garcia.
strick-9: now that the trade deadline passed..what were some of the names you heard we went after
detroitbuc: jf i can see and hope that
pewterreportjf: We've got to get going, room.
cadillac 24: How have all of the young offensive linemen (Joseph, Trueblood, Sears, Penn) played lately? Who stands out?
pewterreportsr: netsbucscardsfan – The Bucs will wind up getting another veteran QB next year to battle Grads to be the heir apprent to Garcia.
cadillac 24: Who do you think will go to the Pro Bowl this year for the Bucs? Will Garcia/Ruud have a shot?
bucboy: keep the faith buc fans! it's a marathon, not a sprint!
antcam: D. Anderson will be the next Tampa QB to hoist the Lombardi Trophy
pewterreportjf: Thanks for joining the PewterReport.com chat session tonight. Let's do it again next Tuesday. Same time, same place.
antcam: Just wishing on a shooting star
pewterreportsr: cadillac24 – I think Penn and Trueblood have played well. I'm not so hot on the guards and center in pass pro. Penn had a fine game against Jax.
strick-9: thank you gentlemen
dbo2440: thank you
bucboy: get us a win on sunday!
pewterreportsr: cadillac24 – Ruud and Garcia have a shot but need to make splash plays more often … and win!
guest: thanks sr/jf
cadillac 24: Thanks guys.:)
pewterreportsr: Thanks for the questions, Bucs fans. Keep coming back to PewterReport.com and tell your friends about us.
