PEWTERREPORT.COM CHAT TRANSCRIPT – 5/8/07
pewterreportjf: Let today's chat session begin.
imabucnut: Okay, just wondering what you think of Coyer after seeing him at work?
strick-9: Well, I for one am extremely pleased with our draft…the only exception was taking Charles johnson in the 4th and Wendling in the 5th
pewterreportjf: imabucnut – it's a night a day difference watching Coach Coyer and Coach Morris as opposed to Coach Franklin and Coach Burns. Watching Coach Morris is really entertaining — he's extremely active.
guest: Jim, there seems to be conflicting reports about Sabby, some say he is the 2nd coming and others not so complimentary .. How did he look in the mini camp?
pewterreportsr: Actually, it will be the biggest Post-Draft Issue we've ever done.
strick-9: Are you surprised a Center was taken in Round 7 w/ Enoka Lucas, Stephenson or Young there?
pewterreportjf: strick – the Bucs had a good draft. I had some questions with the Bucs' decision to draft Sears instead of Ryan Kalil and the Greg Peterson pick in the fifth round.
pewterreportsr: I think Sabby has the tools and charisma to be a real special player.
imabucnut: Are the Bucs that certain that the center position can be filled within?
pewterreportjf: guest – the media was only allowed to watch the first 40 minutes of practice this year, which really stunk. However, in the time we watched Piscitelli was fiery, active and appeared to be very athletic.
spartan: Ok, logged in now, tx Jim (sabby)
strick-9: I think Sears is a phenominal pick….shores up the interior and allows us to go after Sam Baker, Long or several other LT's next year…..I still believe we grab a Center after June cuts are made
pewterreportsr: While Sabby has a tremendous amount of upside, I think he has enough ability right now to challenge for Jermaine Phillips' starting spot.
pewterreportsr: I think the Buccaneers are content at center with Buenning, Lehr and even Jeb Terry competing with John Wade.
pewterreportjf: Scott and I believe Piscitelli could beat out Jermaine Phillips right away. However, we don't feel Tanard Jackson will beat out Will Allen this year. Jackson is still learning the safety position.
imabucnut: Besides Sabby, who else really caught your eye?
pewterreportjf: strick – You're right. Sears could very well be a great player and excellent pick. I just hope Dan Buenning and/or Matt Lehr can upgrade the center position.
spartan: Re: Piscitelli, is that an indictment on Phillips or Piscitelli's abilities?
pewterreportsr: spartan – Both.
guest: Morning Guys, Any news on the Trade of Rice or Kelly prior to the season starting? Maybe for a proven Center?
pewterreportjf: imabucnut – We're hearing that Quincy Black was the star of the rookie mini-camp. The Bucs were very impressed by him. Scott will be writing more about that in his Fab 5, but that's a little nuggest for you to chew on for now. 🙂
spartan: cool – tx
imabucnut: Great, and thanks for the tidbit!
pewterreportjf: guest – From what we're hearing, neither Simeon Rice nor Brian Kelly will be moved this year.
pewterreportsr: Yep. Black was the talk of the town during the mini-camp. It's early, but the team has high hopes for him in 2007.
pewterreportjf: The Bucs like Kelly and unless he holds out, he'll likely be a Buc this year.
dm4bucs: any word on who the tryout contract was given to ?
pewterreportjf: The Bucs want to keep Simeon Rice around to help him bring Gaines Adams along.
imabucnut: IMHO, that's good news.
pewterreportjf: dm4bucs – No word on who the Bucs signed out of all of the tryout players, but we do know they signed at least one. We're working on coming up with the name.
dm4bucs: thx jf
strick-9: Are you happy with the Denman pick…..I'm surprised we didn't make a move on koetz when he was in front of us a few picks
doc bucco: I'm cool with us keeping both Rice and Kelly, If they can stay healthy they are proven veterans that know our system. Just hope they come to play.
imabucnut: When is the next OTA?
pewterreportsr: For a seventh-round pick, I think Denman is a steal.
pewterreportjf: strick – I loved the Denman pick. Early indications are this guy could solidify the backup right tackle job behind Jeremy Trueblood.
pewterreportsr: The next OTAs aren't until next week.
dbo2440: just curious, how did gatlin look, can he even catch? i dont think is he going to turn out to be anything but i am just curious. Did you get to see how fast he is in person
strick-9: Were you surprised we didn't take Charles Johnson when there at 68
pewterreportjf: dbo2440 – I can say with confidence that Justin Gatlin probably is not the try-out player the Bucs have signed. Gatlin had trouble catching the ball and he's a really raw route runner.
imabucnut: How did the two QB's look, and will either of them be TC fodder?
pewterreportsr: The Bucs are curious about Gatlin, but in my opinion, I don't think he warrants getting signed with this WR corps.
strick-9: Although it's not Buc Ball….Sapp looks incredible
dbo2440: yeah i figured, not a suprise he wont make it past these tryouts
pewterreportjf: imabucnut – Zac Taylor looked better than Pat Julmiste. Taylor will go to camp with the Bucs, but he's probably just an extra arm. Hopefully he can learn from the experience and catch on with another team after camp.
doc bucco: I don't really buy into Rice helping Adams take his spot. I know it's a contract year for Sim, but he's got a lot of pride and arrogance.
pewterreportsr: Sapp does look good. He's taking the necessary steps to extend his career.
dm4bucs: CB Chaz Williams and G Anthony Wollschlager signed from try-out contract- from buccaneers.com
pewterreportjf: doc bucco – Rice knows he won't be back in 2008, and I don't think he fears Adams taking his job this year. I think Adams will get used more as a situational-type pass rusher this year. For example, on third-and-long, the Bucs could move Rice to left end to replace Greg Spires and then move Adams in at right end.
dbo2440: is Anthony Davis looking like he will be a back up now?
pewterreportjf: dbo2440 – Yes, Anthony Davis looks like he's fighting for a roster spot, not a starting job.
doc bucco: Good point, thanks for the info JF! It's shaping up to be a nice 3rd down package for the bucs if they can get all of that newly acquired speed on the field.
pewterreportjf: You heard it here first, Bucs fans. – the talk of the offseason has been the Bucs implementing the shotgun on offense, but wait until you see what Monte Kiffin is doing with the defense.
strick-9: I assume Boston must be looking good early for us not to take one weapon
imabucnut: Are there any vets that are in real danger of being cut?
dm4bucs: Just curious how did Darby look in the mini camp?…i think he was a good seventh round pick as well as denman
bluetick: JF/SR Give me your early gut feelings, will Ken Darby make this team?
dm4bucs: nice JF
doc bucco: I'm guessing Monte has got to be looking at a 3-4 Look, with all the linebackers and all that speed. It only makes sense, Right JF?
spartan: Give us a teaser jim – what monte is doing ?
pewterreportjf: strick – We asked the same question regarding David Boston to one of our trusted sources, and he almost killed us and said, "Don't jinx it."
strick-9: Are you pleased with the signing of Ryan Sims….could be a sneaker of a move
pewterreportsr: The Bucs released WR Levon Thomas, FB Mike McFadden and OT Jed Prisby.
pewterreportjf: spartan – We can't reveal too many details now, but stay tuned. I can say that Kiffin will use his personnel in some unique ways.
pewterreportjf: strick – Yes, trading for DT Ryan Sims was a good move. The Bucs are hoping he can become a capable backup to Chris Hovan.
pewterreportsr: We'll have plenty of scoop on the Bucs' defense in the coming months.
doc bucco: What's the latest on the Salary Cap Numbers? I know we haven't signed any picks yet, but do we still have some "wiggle room?"
dbo2440: with the trade for ryan sims does it look like wyms could be released?
strick-9: Well, looking at a front 3 of Carter Sims and Adams is interesting w/ a monster man in the middle to spy is kind of intriguing
pewterreportsr: The Bucs feel VERY confident that their pass rush won't be an issue this year.
pewterreportjf: dob bucco – We're working on getting updated salary cap numbers. Stay tuned.
strick-9: I live in Hilton head SC and Adams will surprise people w/ his ability to defend the run!!!!
pewterreportjf: strick – Put it this way. Scott and I can't wait for training camp. 🙂
pewterreportsr: The Bucs do have some wiggle room, especially with Quarles' release.
imabucnut: I've read that Coyer is a master at disguising coverages…should be very interesting!
doc bucco: It's amazaing what a "full draft" can do for your depth! I can't recall there being this much depth, on both sides of the ball in a long time!!! VERY EXCITING!!!
pewterreportjf: How did everyone enjoy Pewter Report's coverage of the 2007 NFL Draft? Did you find your Pewter Report Draft Previews handy?
dm4bucs: sr/jf were you guys able to see t.jackson and did he look okay at transitioning to safety?
bucpower: Will sabby p replace either allen or phillips at safety?
imabucnut: Have you heard anything else about Q joining the staff?
dm4bucs: PR's coverage was amazing 😉
pewterreportsr: If you are considering coming to Orlando for training camp, we encourage you to stay at the Meridian Palms luxury hotel. That's PR's new HQ for camp. It's very nice, very affordable and 4 minutes from Disney.
pewterreportjf: doc bucco – That's a great point, and one Scott and I were just discussing a few minutes ago. The Bucs are indeed deep at several positions.
spartan: Jim, I enjoyed the draft coverage immensely – when the sever was up 🙁
strick-9: I can't believe the number of fans disappointed with this draft….does Petersen look like he can contriute…gotta be better than Jenkins or Bennett
pewterreportsr: Let's just say that Coyer will bring a ton of new wrinkles to the table. He and Kiffin will get this defense back into the top 10 in a hurry.
pewterreportjf: bucpower – We think Sabby Piscitelli has a good chance to beat out Jermaine Phillips this year. I don't see Tanard Jackson beating out Will Allen this year, though.
imabucnut: I absolutely inhaled the Draft Issue! 🙂
doc bucco: The draft coverage was awesome, but we expect nothing less from you guys. Keep up the good work!
dm4bucs: Contest was a pretty cool idea also
pewterreportsr: Coyer is the rave at One Buc Place right now.
guest: I loved the Kenneth Darby pick, what are the chances he sticks?
dbo2440: I am in buffalo for college and you guys are the only news i get for the bucs, great job surrounding the bucs for the draft and all year round!!!
pewterreportjf: imabucnut – There's a chance Shelton Quarles will work for the Bucs organization in some capacity later on.
pewterreportsr: I think Peterson has the chance to be better than Jenkins. I don't think much of Jenkins. Never have.
bucpower: will the the bucs possibly sign an impact player with the june 1st cuts?
pewterreportjf: Glad to hear you all enjoyed Pewter Report's coverage of the 2007 NFL Draft. As for the server going down once in a while, that's your fault. The server kept going down because too many people were visiting the site at once. 🙂
strick-9: Are you aware of any trades we almost made for current NFL players
doc bucco: With the addition of all the new talent on the Offensive Line, I don't see this as a make or break year for Gruden, but for Bill Muir!!! We gotta be able to run the ball now!!!
pewterreportjf: bucpower – It's possible. The Bucs are keeping an eye out for a veteran middle linebacker, but they seem to be happy with their offseason thus far.
pewterreportsr: Thanks for the kudos on the draft coverage. We had Adams and Black as Bucs' Best Bets and nailed Piscitelli in our mock draft. We also mentioned how Sears and Hayward could be possibilities for the Bucs. Not too shabby.
bluetick: Out of all the draft picks, will do you guys think will make the biggest impact this season?
bluetick: which do you guys…
doc bucco: I'm gonna say Sabby! Immediate contributor on Special Teams
bucpower: will gaines adams ever make the pro bowl?
imabucnut: So are the Bucs comfortable with the WR's we have, or do we pick up a vet?
dm4bucs: almost every player the bucs picked was mentioned in the ideal players for the bucs
pewterreportjf: bluetick – That's a great question. I'm going to say Sabby Piscitelli or Quincy Black. I think Adams might struggle out of the gate initially and then heat up toward the end of the year when he starts to find his way.
pewterreportsr: That's tough, bluetick. I could see Sears starting from Day One, Adams be used as a situational rusher, and Piscitelli and Black starting by season's end. Very tough to say.
pewterreportjf: imabucnut – The Bucs really like their current group of receivers, especially Maurice Stovall.
dm4bucs: black would be starting at strong or mike?
pewterreportsr: Black = Mike.
strick-9: What are your thoughts on Winborn…a casualty b/c I thought he should have started over Nece
bucpower: what happens to barret ruud?
pewterreportsr: strick-9 – All I can say is the Bucs have a ton of depth at LB and the best 3 (or 4) will play.
pewterreportjf: strick – I believe Ryan Nece is in danger of losing his roster spot. He won't start this year, and if the Bucs can sign Winborn to an extension I think Nece will be the odd guy out.
doc bucco: I think Nece would get cut before Winborn, He hasn't really showed much since breaking through in his rookie season
dm4bucs: thx sr…ruud has some serious competition then which is good i hate a guy getting the spot without having to fight for it
doc bucco: 3 or 4? Sounds like a 3-4 Defense to Me!!! ha ha ha!
pewterreportjf: dm4bucs – Yes, but if Black starts it doesn't necessarily mean Barrett Ruud won't. Stay tuned.
dm4bucs: hint hint 😉
imabucnut: Whoa, shiver me timbers!
dm4bucs: man i can't wait for training camp the defense has me pumped
pewterreportsr: doc bucco – Tampa 2 will still be the base, but you will see more 3-4 this year potentially. Pewter Report was the only media outlet that caught on to the fact that the Bucs used it last year situationally to get Winborn on the field.
strick-9: holy crappola
doc bucco: Gotta come up with a new name now that the Whole League uses the "Tampa 2"
imabucnut: How about the Tampa 234? 🙂
dm4bucs: we are inventing the tampa 3-4 i guess now 🙂
pewterreportjf: Monte Kiffin will be creative in terms of how he uses his personnel. This might mean using the 3-4 defense, or it might mean using some other creative personnel groupings.
imabucnut: It's going to be a GREAT year to be a Buc fan!
pewterreportsr: I don't think the 3-4 will be the Bucs' new base. I just think they will use it more often than they did last year.
strick-9: Any word on Heyward…he could be a steal as well
pewterreportjf: strick – We didn't hear much about him, but that doesn't mean he didn't do well.
doc bucco: JF, do you think that "Bandit" or "Rover" Linebacker will work in the NFL that Quincy Black played in College? Sounds alot like what Ray Lewis Does now doesn't it?
dm4bucs: i think that is great tho since it was already said we played alot of cover 3 last year and man so we throw in some more 3-4 and defense will have a hard time with preparation for our def!
pewterreportsr: I'm telling you right now, the defensive coaches are amazing. Coyer is the closest thing possible to Marinelli and Morris is the closest thing to Tomlin.
imabucnut: I think I'm going to cry! With happiness!
pewterreportjf: doc bucco – I'm not sure if that would work, but I don't doubt the Bucs would be open to using Black in that way. Black apparently had a fantastic showing at the rookie mini-camp.
pewterreportjf: Okay, room. Scott and I have to run.
imabucnut: Thanks guys!
dm4bucs: thx sr/jf
pewterreportjf: Thanks for joining the Pewter Report Chat Session.
dbo2440: thanks guys
pewterreportsr: Thanks for chatting with us.
doc bucco: Sweet! Gonna be a very exciting year for sure. I'm sure with all the new guys, the Old Veterans have got be excited and re-energized too!!! Thanks GUYS!
pewterreportjf: Take care, and see you on the Pewter Insider message boards.
