The Buccaneers filled out most of their practice squad by signing CB Kyle Arrington, WR Patrick Carter, DT Rashaad Duncan, RB Kareem Huggins, T James Lee, TE Ryan Purvis and WR Mario Urrutia on Sunday. Tampa Bay still has one spot remaining on its eight-man practice roster.
A few of the players signed were with the team last season. Lee spent the 2008 season on the Bucs roster, and Arrington was on the Buccaneers practice squad. Arrington (5-10, 196) had 12 tackles in the preseason with three passes defensed. Lee (6-4, 305) played at guard and tackle for Tampa Bay in the preseason. Some of the practice squad signees were preseason contributors for the Buccaneers.
Huggins carried the ball 19 times for 74 yards in two preseason games. A hyper-extended knee kept Huggins out of the final two games against the Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans. In the preseason, Urrutia (6-6, 232) had seven receptions for 85 yards, and Carter (6-3, 215) eight catches for 88 yards.
Purvis (6-4, 260) had five catches for 69 yards and one touchdown. His score came on a 14-yard strike from quarterback Josh Johnson against the Texans on Friday night. Duncan (6-2, 315) was an undrafted free agent out of Pittsburgh. He had 10 tackles and a sack in the preseason.
To fill out the final two spots on the 53-man roster, the Buccaneers made two waiver claims. The Bucs claimed former New York Giants defensive end Maurice Evans off waivers. The Penn State product is in his first season in the NFL. Evans (6-2, 264) was an undrafted free agent who entered the NFL draft after his junior season. After being charged with possession of marijuana before football season, Evans was suspended for the first three games of 2008.
Evans had a banner sophomore season with 12.5 sacks, 21.5 tackles for a loss, and five forced fumbles for the Nittany Lions. After the suspension as a junior, Evans was behind starter Aaron Maybin. He notched three sacks and 4.5 tackles for a loss in 2008.
