Tampa Bay safety Dwight Smith might have done some serious damage to his value on the free agent market and could be facing jail time after being arrested Tuesday for the second time in two years.
Smith, 26, was arrested at 4 a.m. Tuesday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly pulling out a BB gun when approached by teenagers at a McDonald’s drive-thru, located on Northdale Blvd. and Dale Mabry Hwy. in Tampa.
According to the Tampa Tribune, the teens recognized Smith and attempted to talk to him. Smith allegedly pulled the weapon and a passenger in Smith’s car, David Roston, got out of the vehicle and punched Trevor Boyce in the face after a verbal confrontation.
Smith was booked at Orient Road Jail at 6 a.m. and was released two hours later after posting $2,000 bond. Roston was reportedly arrested for battery.
Smith’s charge is a third degree felony and the second weapons charge he faces in the last two years. In April of 2003, Smith allegedly brandished a gun at another motorist. He was sentenced to one year’s probation and fined $225. He was also ordered to take anger management counseling and complete 25 hours of community service in a plea deal with prosecutors in Pinellas County.
Smith, who started all 16 games at safety last season, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday, which might explain why the police report had him listed as “unemployed.”
A 2001 third-round draft pick out of Akron, Smith has played in 63 games (34 starts) and notched 223 tackles, 15 interceptions (three in post-season) and 28 passes defensed while spending time at both cornerback and safety.
The highlight of Smith’s career came in Super Bowl XXXVII when he set a Super Bowl record by returning two interceptions for touchdowns en route to Tampa Bay’s 48-21 win over the Oakland Raiders.
