The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took the practice field with heavy hearts on Wednesday afternoon.
Tragedy struck the Matt and Melissa Bryant family when Bryant's youngest son, Tryson, passed away on Wednesday morning.
"We had a terrible tragedy this morning," Bucs head coach Jon Gruden announced after the team's practice. "We lost a key member of our family. Matt Bryant and Melissa have lost their youngest son. I don't have a lot details. Our prayers go out to the Bryants.
"I just ask the fans to keep the Bryants in their prayers."
Gruden suggested the sudden passing of Tryson, who was born on June 16, was unexpected.
"I don't have many details, but from what I understand the young man just didn't wake up this morning," said Gruden. "It's shocking, but again, I don't have any more details than that."
The Buccaneers took a knee and held a prayer for Matt and Melissa Bryant at the conclusion of Wednesday afternoon's practice at One Buccaneer Place.
"Like everyone, the news of Matt and Melissa Bryant's son Tryson hit me hard today," Bucs punter Josh Bidwell said in a statement. "Having kids of my own I couldn't imagine the pain that is associated with such a terrible loss. The entire extended Buccaneers family will be there for the Bryants in every way possible to help them during this difficult time. We hope that everyone keeps them in their thoughts and prayers."
Tampa Bay general manager Bruce Allen also released a statement on Wednesday afternoon.
"The entire Buccaneer family is deeply saddened by this tragedy," Allen said. "The Bryants have been an inspiration to our entire community through their commitment to their family and their exhaustive efforts working with children and those in need in the Bay area. Our thoughts and prayers are with Matt and Melissa during this difficult time."
Matt Bryant, 33, has been with the Buccaneers since 2005. He kicked the second-longest field goal in NFL history by hitting a 62-yarder to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in October of 2006.
He made both of his field goal attempts on Sunday, including the game-winning 21-yarder that defeated the Bears in overtime.
Gruden said the Bucs would determine later in the week whether Bryant could play vs. the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
"This puts things in real perspective," said Gruden. "We'll deal with it from a football standpoint, but we're more worried about Matt and Melissa from a personal standpoint. They are great friends."
Tryson is survived by Matt, Melissa and his siblings Daniel, Jacob, Joshua, Madison and Tre’.. Information regarding donations or expressions of sympathy will be announced as soon as arrangements have been made.
