Not only did the Buccaneers falter against the visiting Carolina Panthers on Sunday, losing the 2014 season opener 20-14, Tampa Bay players didn’t produce much of anything in fantasy football.
Starting running back Doug Martin and wide receiver Vincent Jackson, two of the team’s best fantasy football options, were stymied by a stout Carolina defense. Martin was ineffective as a rusher, carrying the ball nine times for nine yards (1.0 avg.), and only had one catch for seven yards. Sixteen yards of total production was not what Bucs fantasy football players had in mind.
Jackson was barely any better, catching four passes for 36 yards and no touchdowns.
Quarterback Josh McCown had a rocky start to his Bucs career, but was likely Tampa Bay’s best fantasy option, completing 22-of-35 passes for 183 yards with two fourth quarter touchdowns after two previous interceptions. He also rushed for 27 yards on three carries (9.0 avg.).
Backup receiver Chris Owusu caught a touchdown pass, as did reserve running back Bobby Rainey. It’s highly unlikely that either Owusu or Rainey got the start from many fantasy football players.
Tampa Bay’s defense didn’t record a score or a takeaway, and only notched one sack while surrendering 20 points and 334 yards of total offense. Kicker Patrick Murray only added two extra points and didn’t kick any field goals for the Buccaneers.
