Since arriving in Tampa on April 1, Jameis Winston has repeatedly voiced his excitement about having three 6-5 targets to throw to. Now, three weeks into OTAs, the rookie quarterback is getting to show that eagerness on the field in Dirk Koetter’s QB-friendly offense.
“The most exciting part is the explosive plays and getting to throw to all these big-time wide receivers we have,” Winston said after practice on Thursday. “That’s the fun part of everything.”
Just from the few OTA sessions that have been open to the media, one can see that Winston likes to stretch the ball downfield. While the team’s other quarterback, Mike Glennon, is more conservative and tends to check down to outlet receivers in the flats, Winston’s eyes are constantly in the secondary, not afraid of fitting throws into tight spaces.
Much of that is due to the amount of trust he has in his big receivers.
“I have three guys that are above 6-foot-3,” Winston said. “That is amazing. That is every quarterback’s dream and I got it.”
The downfield approach is nothing new for Winston. At Florida State he gained a reputation of being a gunslinger, throwing to the likes of Kelvin Benjamin and Rashaad Greene en route to nearly 8,000 yards passing in two seasons. And while it got him into trouble at times – 18 INTs in 2014 – he likely won’t divert from his ways, now that he has Vincent Jackson, Mike Evans and Austin Seferian-Jenkins, among others.
“I have two (Kelvin Benjamins) this year with Vincent being the veteran and Mike (Evans) being an outstanding young guy, one year older than me,” Winston said. “It’s definitely a blessing to have two of those guys. But other guys like Louis Murphy, Russell Shepard and even Kenny Bell, who is a rookie this year; those guys are (also) doing great.”
