The Buccaneers placed running back Charles Sims on injured reserve on Thursday after the fifth-year veteran suffered a knee injury during Saturday night’s preseason game at Tennessee. Sims’ injury all but assures the four running backs that will be making the team consist of starter Peyton Barber, Ronald Jones II, the team’s second-round pick, Jacquizz Rodgers and Shaun Wilson, an undrafted free agent out of Duke, that catches the ball well out of the backfield and returns kicks.

Sims, who was not having a spectacular camp, was a third-round pick in in 2014 out of West Virginia and has never had much success as a primary ballcarrier. Instead, Sims’ best work has come as a complimentary back. His most productive season came in 2015 when he had 107 carries for 529 rushing yards to go along with 51 receptions for 561 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns. That year he and Doug Martin were the NFL’s best rushing tandem in combined yards from scrimmage.

Sims has also struggled with injuries missing time in 18 games over his first four seasons in the league. He did manage to suit up for all 16 games in 2017 where he led the team with a 4.5 yard average, however that came on just 21 carries for 95 yards. Sims had 35  catches for 249 yards and one touchdown last year.
