The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released wide receiver Freddie Martino to make room for quarterback Jameis Winston on the team’s 53-man roster. The Bucs had a three-day window of time to activate Winston from the NFL’s suspended list.
Martino was deep on the Bucs’ depth chart at wide receiver and was active over rookie receiver Justin Watson due to his ability to play on special teams where he was the gunner on punt coverage opposite cornerback Ryan Smith. The move leaves Tampa Bay with five wide receivers, and will likely mean that Watson becomes active on game days.
