Bucs head coach Bruce Arians has already proven he doesn’t mince many words. Brutally honest with his players and staff, even the media has been getting a dose of the Arians’ truth serum.

During the coaches breakfast last week in Arizona, Arians was asked about right tackle Demar Dotson, and while he started off complimentary, he couldn’t help himself from telling the truth about what he has seen from Dotson on film.

“He can still pass block, to me, that’s where you start,” Arians said. “Can he get better in the running game? Yeah, but sometimes you’re asking a guy who just physically can’t do something. I’ve had a couple tackles that were really good pass blockers, but couldn’t cut off to the left, so don’t ask them to. It’s no secret, we’ll run some plays just one way, there will be some play in the game where we just run it right, they know it, we know it, now stop it.

“Don’t ask him to do a bunch, you can ask him to do some stuff, but don’t ask him to do a bunch of stuff because he’s going to lose, but he can still block.”

Arians assessment of the longest-tenured Buc on the current roster(2009) is another example of the coaching staff’s philosophy to put players in a position to utilize their strengths. Something that could be argued was lacking with the prior staff. Of course it also means the team is likely looking to upgrade the position sooner rather than later. Dotson who will turn 34 in October could be suiting up for the last time for the Buccaneers in 2019.

One thing is certain, Arians will tell the truth, and as a player – and even a media member – it is a refreshing and welcomed change.
