Bruce Arians has went from saying two practices ago that Jameis Winston had his best practice of training camp to saying he was fantastic today. It’s another step in the right direction that Winston and the Bucs need to go.
Winston had his fair number of passes on Tuesday, maybe slightly less than we’ve seen in other practices in order two manage his usage. In that time, though, Winston has been doing as much with his vision as he is performing with his arm.
It was a third straight practice in which Winston did not throw an interception, and the defense has been just as rampant with their pressure as they were when camp started. He’s been able to understand where the blitz is coming from and know where to move accordingly. It’s been a big turnaround over the past five practices.
After an initial 11-on-11 drill that saw him throw three completions and one incompletion on a play that Breshad Perriman wasn’t able to stay in bounds, Winston really stepped it up in the next drill in 7-on-7’s. He had two check down’s after good coverage, but then put his deep ball game on display.
First he hit Mike Evans deep down the right hand side of the field.

Then threw one down the middle to Justin Watson for another long completion.

Two of Winston’s biggest criticisms are his deep ball accuracy and his ability to throw the ball in the middle while in between defenders. On Tuesday, he excelled at both. Here in the same drill, he connected with Breshad Perriman over the middle, following up with another nice pass to Cam Brate.

Winston wasn’t perfect despite throwing no interceptions for the third straight day. If you had to point out some faults, he did have couple balls that were under thrown. For example, the deep ball Watson from before was a completion, but had he hit him in stride, Watson is gone for the touchdown. He also had this pass to O.J. Howard early on that had to be adjusted to.

For the rest of practice Winston was put into plenty of football situations, where using his vision to defeat the defense really paid off. In one scenario, it was 3rd and 2 for the Bucs and the defense brought the blitz. He saw where it was coming from and got the ball out to the running back on a perfect pass for the conversion. It was a snap decision that needed to be made right away for the advantage they had and Winston succeeded figuring out what had to be done.

He later on made another great play where he felt the blitz coming to his blind side. Instead of panicking, he simply rolled away to his right away from the pressure threw a strike to Cam Brate for a touchdown. It was just another play in which Winston’s eyes and decision making were just as good as his passing.

After practice, Bruce Arians gave praise to Winston’s progression in camp, particularly highlighting his play against the blitz from the previous video.
